Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media

Military's 'sock puppet' software creates fake online identities to spread pro-American propaganda.

The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.

The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.

Mudcat's openness to lyric requests and discussions of the Digital Tradition lyrics database is:

A) a hugely significant public service to the worldwide web community

and

B) the main attraction that led many of us to find this site in the first place, and subsequently join up.

If any part of this forum were to be made inaccessible to non-members, the "BS" section would be my choice. We have enough crackpots among ourselves without letting strangers add to the chaos. But the music section needs to remain open to the universe.

I'm a bit worried and confused. Am I not welcome here? If so, I shall of course stop posting, but I've enjoyed exchanging ideas and opinions, memories and comments. The article indicates that the purpose of the method is to create false identities in order to post propaganda.

1. If a "false identity" is created, it would be apparent that the false persona would be a member so banning GUEST posts beyond current limitations would be completely useless.

2. The suggested "IF THEN ELSE NOT" requires the existence of a "Permitted List." Who's gonna write the software to keep the "Permitted List" current with our conversations?

I don't worry too much about it - the process has been ongoing since well before the internet. I found 'intelligence' on myself which had been collected in the 1960's - inaccurate as usual.

I rely on the fact that governments are not very good at this. The Guardian carried an advert earlier this week for MI5 officers - "Analyse information", "Make decisions that really matter" - Salary £24750. Well, it's more interesting than driving a train, although it doesn't pay as much!

When the Schizophrenic manager at work managed to convince upper management that I should visit the Shrink, we had a little chat, then he asked me "Do you hear voices in your head?"

So we then had this nice conversation ...

Well at first I used to think they must be coming from outside, but now I am sure that they are all inside my head.

What do the voices day?

Well, the good voices usually tell me to do good things, and the bad voices tell me to do bad things, but sometimes theygood seem to get confused and the good voices tell me to do bad things, and even the bad voices tell me to do good things, and sometimes they just argue with each other, and I don't don't what they really want me to do.

He was very interested now.

So how many voices are there?

Well, I used to think there were lots, but now I think that it's just really all the once voice.

He leaned forward on his chair "So who do you think this voice is?"

Oh, it's just me.

Very soon, I was standing outside his office, in the hallway ...

Management subsequently sent me for very expensive IQ tests, the type personally administered by a trained psychologist, and to which 'there are no wrong answers'....

The result was - _+5 SD ... that's 3 in 100,000 .... :-)


The psycho manager then claimed that I had 'faked the test to pretend I was smarter than I really was'...

They promoted him out of my hair ....

I've had a chance to try out both socialism and capitalism, and I like them both just fine...in reasonable measure, and in combination with one another. What I don't like is militarism, absolutism, authoritarianism, and corporatism...in unreasonable measure.

A corporation has become, legally speaking, an immortal legal entity that lives forever as long as someone's there who's willing to run it, and its only purpose is, like any living thing...to feed itself (meaning to make money)...and to survive and hopefully become more prosperous. Therefore it does everything possible to reach for that ever enlarging goal of making MORE money.

This is also what nation states do. They try to survive and grow richer.

The people come and go, they die off like flies, and more are born, but the corporation or the nation goes on and on, barring some catastrophe which destroys them completely and puts something else in their place (another corporation or another political regime).

It's easy to see that the people have become subordinate to these artificial ideas they invented: the nation state and the corporation. These ideas they once invented to serve them have turned the tables on them, because the people now serve the nation state and they serve the corporation. Both use them until they're too old, then let them die, and enslave the next generation that comes along.

This does not result in a free people, it results in slavery. But it's not immediately evident, because the slave is given enough toys and money and entertainment to think he's doing pretty well, and he can always look to other slaves who are far worse off than he is.

One difference, though. The corporation and the nation state have no heart. They have no soul. They feel no pain. They experience no love or compassion. They aren't even really alive. But they act as if they were alive, and the courts treat them as if they were alive, and they devour the Earth and its people. This has happened under both socialism and capitalism, but I think it's reached its peak under corporatism.

I also support the Rhinoceros Party, although I wouldn't try to spell that after helping support the MP. They had platforms that made sense.


The Parti Rhinocéros, known as the Rhinoceros Party of Canada was a satirical federal political party in Canada from the 60s until the early 90s. They were much of an entertainment source and a kind of protestation party for voters. I won't describe them much, as the most interesting thing they had were their platform. You can still see their page on wikipedia if you want.

repealing the law of gravity,
reducing the speed of light because it's much too fast,
paving Manitoba to create the world's largest parking lot,
providing higher education by building taller schools,
instituting English, French and illiteracy as Canada's three official languages,
offering to retrain those constituents who want to become illiterate by enrolling them in a state educational institution,

The Rhinoceros Party (of Canada) platform was marvelous! LOL! Even Chongo Chimp can't come up with a better platform than that to run on. I was an enthusiastic supporter of the Rhinoceros Party for many years, although not an official member. I also voted for the Natural Law Party once or twice, 999. I don't see them on your list.

I would support a political initiative to move both Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland west and join them directly to the rest of the country. Newfoundland could be moved right up against Labrador, and P.E.I. could be joined to...ummm...whichever part they are nearest to now (where's the Atlas?)...

Anyway, you get the idea. This would reduce ferry costs right down to nothing in the future, and it would help dem islanders to get over dat feeling of separateness that has been bothering them for generations and they could join the greater Canuck collective and not get put down anymore by snotty people in Ontario, eh? ;-)

I was in a meeting with the DM of Transport Canada/Surface/Sea (a Quebecer) and his entourage and a bunch of Newf politicians and their Coast Guard elite (for ferriners, all Coast Guard is Federal as is Transport canada). The head buraucrat of the Coast Guard for Newf said, at the opening of the meeting, "I read that Newfoundland is drifting closer to Quebec by 2 cm per yer. I hope we can get some funds for the dredging job before we meet up."

The Newfs and Maritimers all laughed but the Quebecers and Ottawa 'crats kinda smiled politely.

I'll continue for the sake of Canucks who know the history... there was a rather awkward pause and my boss, a New Brunswicker, spoke up and said, "Yes, what with Meech Lake and Mount Cashel, Newfoundlanders have been having politics shoved down their throats and religion shoved up their asses." There was complete silence for a tense moment and then laughter all around the conference.
Much work got done that day after the "ice was broken".

Here's another notion. We could dig up part of the Rocky Mountains, bring the debris east on trains, and use it to fill up the northern half of Lake Ontario, and then pave it over and erect a 50-foot sea wall all along the southern edge of the new paved area. This would solve Toronto's downtown parking problems for at least the next 10 years and would ensure that the city will be relatively tsunami-safe, barring a major shift of the Earth on its axis.

Yes. We Canadians refer to that as the "American Fly on the windshield Syndrome" (AFWS) We usually just ignore it until it gets hard to see clearly past the southern borders. Then we send out the window washers. It's another make work project.

Something most people don't know is that 50% of the snow in Canada is created artificially by snowmaking machines at ski resorts and hiking areas by using discarded butter fat that is mixed with styrofoam. We used to ship the real stuff over from Russia, but it got way too expensive, so we make it ourselves now, eh?

Wait 'til the dead of winter when the shallow waters are frozen all the way down. Get a lot of trucks and a big crew with a bunch of chain saws and set to work. Haul those slabs and chunks out on the trucks and drive them to some hole in the ground where you want them. Then dump them.

lol, GfS. I suspect you've read about the Brit/Canuck response to the notion of 'manifest destiny' by, I think, Warren Harding in the 1850s (?).

We built the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) to tie the east and west of this country so as to ensure we were seen as a viable nation. It was also a method of moving troops fast, relatively speaking. However, everything we've done hasn't always been that smart. Our command structure fought hard for Canadians to lead the Dieppe invasion--actually a thing that was doomed to failure even before it happened. The cost was horrible. And it didn't do a damned thing in real term--test the defenses of the coast to see how difficult the eventual D Day would be my as--pfffft.

So, we know how to build railroads, die in battle, and appreciate movies like 'Canadian Bacon' or the word 'hoser'. However, Ebbie has opened new worlds for us. Sanctification isn't in the cards, but there's always the next best thing: be a Canadian.
