I kind of doubt that this is trad, but it has the right flavour (and singer). It's easy enough to grab the lyrics off the song, but I'd love its history, too, if anyone knows.

YouTube version: Glass of Water

Comment with the YT video linked to by the OP:

' Written by Sydney Carter. Guitar by Martin Carthy. From the album "Isla Cameron" (XTRA, 1966) '

I remember Sydney Carter singing this at the National Folk Festival at Sutton Bonnington, Notts many years ago. He accompanied himself on a small drum. As far as I can remember he said it was inspired by a song he heard in Africa.

See another thread, recently refreshed:

Lady Vangeline, Greek folksong
provided the tune
used by Sydney Carter for
"Glass of Water,"

says so in one of the posts.

Quite right, Kebroxu, I think I must have remembered the source incorrectly as the little drum Sydney Carter played looked African to me!

Here's links to a couple of pages with samples from Sydney's album Sydney Carter in Concert (recorded in Australia) In one snippet he explains that the meldoy is from a Greek dance, and in the other he says that for a Greek man to call a gril a glass of water is a great compliment.

Glass

Water

I remember the custom in Greece was to first serve a glass of cold water (krio nero) to customers in a restaurant. Very civilised!

Long Firm Freddie: I also remember Tom Paley telling the joke about seeing a graffito in a Men's toilet that said 'I LIKE GRILS'. Somebody had crossed out 'GRILS' and written 'GIRLS'.
Somebody else had written 'WHAT ABOUT US GRILS?'
