I am a part-time performer of traditional and trad. idiom songs. I have recently started performing Sydney Carter's Port Mahon, a wonderful song he wrote in the early 1960s. However, I got it from notation and have never heard it performed. I would love to hear a recording of it. Help or clues, anyone?

I have a recording at home (Sydney Australia) and also have Sydneys Carter's song books (~5 of them) which includes Port Mahon. If you don't get any answers (and the request appears to be 14 days old as I read it I can come to some arrangement to get a tape and/or photocopies to you. It is a beaut song and haunts me over the decades. I first heard Sydney Carter in 1972, at the 7th Australian Folk Festival.

I haven't been reading these pages lately as I have just been at the 33rd! I am about to scan in the indexes of all the books and send them to an Australian performer who recently requested info on Sydney Carter. You could presumably contact me on these threads or at my personal page.

Nadia Cattouse on Parlophone R 5240

I have no idea if any of these have survived into the CD age. I am fairly certain that I have it on a vinyl LP, sung beautifully by Carole Pegg. I will check when I wade back into the vinyl shelves.

G'day yet again...

Hmm ... It seems that tab characters don't paste into the Mudcat email box. If you are interested inthe whole index, I suppose you could copy all the text into a word processing program and manual insert page returns after every page number (>70 lines). There are a few other typesetter's tricks to format the rest, but this isn't a typesetting seminar!

Anyway, i hope this is some help. I'm sure that there are many more recent recordings, as Port Mahon is a beautiful song and I have heard it a number of times. A lot of Sydney Carter's music turns up in religious contexts - all the way from Quakers to Roman Catholics! - so that may be a useful search tip.

Thanks for your message, Bob. I too have all the Sydney Carter song books, and so am aware of the recordings you mention, which I have been seeking - unsuccessfully! - at record fairs for some years now. It seems to me that SC is a great 'unsung' folk idiom writer. I can't understand why more of his songs aren't sung more often. I certainly do MY best! So . . . I'm still on the lookout for a currently available recording of Port Mahon . . .

I was greatly impressed by Sydney Carter when I heard him in Sydney and Canberra, in 1972. I love his songs - beautifully crafted with a wonderful sense of both tune and rhythm. If you are not successful in finding a record, I can, in extremis, run of a cassette copy of the recording in my collection.

I've been singing this song since the early 70's and this is how I remember it
It was recorded by Nadia Catoose(?)who was backed by Martin Carthy. Martin reckoned that he and I were probably the only ones to remember the song - obviously he was wrong

That's pretty much how I remember it. Yes, Sydney Carter. Yes, Nadia Cattouse, who I believe was the wife of a West Indies (Jamaica?) ambassador. Martin accompanied her as a rule. She was a regular on a news roundup TV show (In Town Tonight? - the aging memory falters) as were Robin Hall & Jimmie MacGregor and a few others. Count me in as another who remembers it, though I haven't sung it in a while.

Bob - I have never seen a written copy of the words, nor have I written it down myself - it was passed to me as an oral version - so don't really think I've made too many mistakes after over 30 years of remembering.

Since it is a Sydney Carter tune - it probably won't end up in the DT - his publisher has problems with that...but people will have the file and can share...

I would be interested to see how the tune has held up.

I bought all four of his books when he toured Australia in 1972. He didn't have them for sale at the festival or his concerts, but told me where I could get them ... from the Presbyterian Bookshop! I did send him some of my concert photographs for possible use in later books ... but I have never seen any other books than the four that I bought then.

The tune I have has a common form for verses 1, 2 and 4 with a variant for verse 3 ... then verse four extends for the extra two lines. I could set it in MusicTime and send you an exported MIDI file ... I could also send you black & white GIF scans of the sheet music (melody plus 2-line piano part, if I remember correctly - 3 sheets in all). 1-bit GIFs only run about 60 kb per page, so they don't overload your ISP's limits. I will PM my e-mail address to you.

G'day again,

I got all the dots (of the melody line, anyway) into MusicTime and saved a MIDI file. Here is the MIDItext conversion (retrievable using Alan of Oz's TextMIDI program). The tune, as published in Galliard's 1969 book Songs of Sydney Carter, In the present tense, Book 3 is given in 9/8 time, with occasional bars of the chorus in 12/8. I'm not sure I would not just extend the note in question with a fermata, but that is how it is shown.

I have just set it to a single MIDI "piano" line, as I find that best for learning the tune.

I notice that the recording credits given on the page are:
