Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Azizi Date: 22 Jan 06 - 09:51 PM Check out this discussion about Canada's election: Daily Kos: Conservative Canada? by by aaraujo;Sun Jan 22, 2006 Here's one comment from a poster about this subject: "Need to remember that the Liberals, Bloc and NDP are all center to left parties. With only 128, the Tories would need to govern from the center to get any legislation passed. Over 140 or so they might be able to move further right by picking off a handful of right-leaning Liberals or Bloquists, but under 130? They'd need to make compromises. If they tried to push too far, the sword of no-confidence would always be hanging over their head. It would be a terrible misreading by the Tories were they to believe there is some mandate in their likely minority government win. The voters are chastising the Grits, but the moment Harper drops the moderate mask, the inroads in Ontario and Quebec would dry up and a strengthened LPC would likely be returned with a majority; or at the very least a working Liberal-NDP government". by ActivistGuy on Sun Jan 22, 2006 -snip- So, do you Canadian 'Catters agree with this assessment? |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Raptor Date: 22 Jan 06 - 09:12 AM Friday, January 20th, 2006 Michael Moore Statement on Canadian Election Michael Moore is currently in production on his next movie. As an avid lover of all things Canadian, he has issued the following statement regarding Canada's upcoming election on Monday: Oh, Canada -- you're not really going to elect a Conservative majority on Monday, are you? That's a joke, right? I know you have a great sense of humor, and certainly a well-developed sense of irony, but this is no longer funny. Maybe it's a new form of Canadian irony -- reverse irony! OK, now I get it. First, you have the courage to stand against the war in Iraq -- and then you elect a prime minister who's for it. You declare gay people have equal rights -- and then you elect a man who says they don't. You give your native peoples their own autonomy and their own territory -- and then you vote for a man who wants to cut aid to these poorest of your citizens. Wow, that is intense! Only Canadians could pull off a hat trick of humor like that. My hat's off to you. Far be it from me, as an American, to suggest what you should do. You already have too many Americans telling you what to do. Well, actually, you've got just one American who keeps telling you to roll over and fetch and sit. I hope you don't feel this appeal of mine is too intrusive but I just couldn't sit by, as your friend, and say nothing. Yes, I agree, the Liberals have some 'splainin' to do. And yes, one party in power for more than a decade gets a little... long. But you have a parliamentary system (I'll bet you didn't know that -- see, that's why you need Americans telling you things!). There are ways at the polls to have your voices heard other than throwing the baby out with the bath water. These are no ordinary times, and as you go to the polls on Monday, you do so while a man running the nation to the south of you is hoping you can lend him a hand by picking Stephen Harper because he's a man who shares his world view. Do you want to help George Bush by turning Canada into his latest conquest? Is that how you want millions of us down here to see you from now on? The next notch in the cowboy belt? C'mon, where's your Canadian pride? I mean, if you're going to reduce Canada to a cheap download of Bush & Co., then at least don't surrender so easily. Can't you wait until he threatens to bomb Regina? Make him work for it, for Pete's sake. But seriously, I know you're not going to elect a guy who should really be running for governor of Utah. Whew! I knew it! You almost had me there. Very funny. Don't do that again. God, I love you, you crazy cold wonderful neighbors to my north. Don't ever change. Michael Moore (Mr. Moore is not available for interviews because he now needs to address the situation in Azerbaijan. But he could be talked into it for a couple of tickets to a Leaf's game.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 21 Jan 06 - 06:24 PM Minority governments can easily occur when one has more than 2 political parties of a significant size, Azizi. The party that wins the most seats (a plurality) may still fall considerably short of a majority. As such, it must then bargain some with various of the other parties who have won seats in the government if it wants to get legislation passed. This can actually be quite a good thing, as it encourages compromise and joining of minds to some extent. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Peace Date: 21 Jan 06 - 06:05 PM There are 308 seats in the House of Commons. A majority requires 50% plus one seat. Ergo, 154 plus 1 = 155 seats. No way they will get that many. They will be about 30 short of the magic number. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: bobad Date: 21 Jan 06 - 02:35 PM Tories trying to keep true colours hidden : Tories try to muzzle admiring right-wing U.S. pundits E-mail warns that pro-Harper comments puts majority at risk Sheldon Alberts, The Ottawa Citizen Published: Saturday, January 21, 2006 WASHINGTON - In the dying days of the Canadian federal election campaign, American conservatives are being asked to keep their affection for Stephen Harper quiet out of fear that any expression of U.S. support could harm his chances of forming a majority government. In an e-mail circulated by the head of a right-wing think-tank, U.S. conservatives were warned to refuse interviews with Canadian media until after Monday's vote. The missive from Paul Weyrich, chairman of the Washington-based Free Congress Foundation, came at the request of Gerald Chipeur, a Calgary lawyer and conservative political activist in Alberta. According to Mr. Weyrich, Mr. Chipeur telephoned him this week with news that Mr. Harper's Conservatives are "within striking distance of electing an outright majority," but that the party could lose that opportunity if it appeared that it was too closely aligned with the U.S. political right. "He said the Canadian media, which is trying to save the current Liberal government, has a strategy of calling conservatives in the U.S.A. in the hopes that someone will inadvertently say something that can be hung around the Conservatives," Mr. Weyrich said in the e-mail, which was sent Thursday to Washington-area conservatives and posted yesterday on several political blogs. "Canadian voters have been led to believe that American conservatives are scary and if the Conservative party can be linked with us, they perhaps can diminish a Conservative victory," continued Mr. Weyrich, considered one of the most influential neoconservative activists in Washington. "Chipeur asks that if Canadian media calls, please do not be interviewed until Monday evening at which point hopefully there will be reason to celebrate." Neither Mr. Chipeur nor Mr. Weyrich returned calls placed to their offices yesterday. An assistant to Mr. Weyrich confirmed the gag order among staffers at the Free Congress Foundation. The memo underscores the depth of anxiety among conservatives, on both sides of the border, over how Canadian voters will react to perceptions Mr. Harper shares an ideological kinship with President George W. Bush and the Republican Party. In December, Mr. Harper wrote the conservative Washington Times to distance himself from an op-ed article that predicted he would cosy up to the U.S. president. The author of the Times piece, former Cato Institute fellow Patrick Basham, described Mr. Harper as "pro-free trade, pro-Iraq war, anti-Kyoto, and socially conservative." Mr. Basham's newspaper prediction that Mr. Harper would "quickly become Mr. Bush's new best friend internationally and the poster boy for his ideal foreign leader" became central elements of a Liberal attack ad against the Conservatives. Mr. Harper said the article "greatly" oversimplified his views. In an interview yesterday, Mr. Basham said he has since received dozens of e-mails from Canadian conservatives urging him to stop writing nice things about Mr. Harper. "I had to stop printing them off because there was a pile on the floor," he said. "The conservative Canadian reaction has been overwhelmingly negative," said Mr. Basham, a Canadian citizen who has worked in the U.S. capital for five years. "Conservative Canadians accused me of costing Harper the election, doing the Liberals' dirty work for them." The Ottawa Citizen 2006 |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Metchosin Date: 19 Jan 06 - 06:09 PM gnu, I think the more likely scenario, if there is a minority Tory government is that the Liberals will support Harper on a lot of stuff, particularly in lowering corporate tax rates, which the NDP managed to block during the last go around. Might be good for the boys of Bay St., but it doesn't bode well for the average Canadian at all. The Torys won't get much support from the Bloc if they try to dick with any social programmes that negatively affect Quebec. |

Remember: a political party is an organization, and like all organizations it exists mainly to enlarge and sustain itself...at the cost of what? No, what I am recommending is a bit more like what they had in ancient Greece in the city of Athens...an assembly of equals who are tied to NO organization, debating issues and deciding them by vote. Like Athens, only...no slaves, and the women get to vote too. LH ... it was also a time of no seat belts, asbestos insulation, lead based paint, lead based regular gas, (not only where the toy soldiers lead), the woman's place was in the home, everyone smoked, and they smoke just about everywhere, lethal chemicals were dumped anywhere, subtle segregation (yup, also here in Canada too, ever here of Africaville in Nova Scotia, Japanese out in B.C.), rampant poverty in the north, and in the maritimes, our government's mistreatment of it's First Nations back then. All in all things have gotten somewhat better since Mr. Average Canadian voter ... today, unfortuantely we have an 'each person for themselves' evolving attitude. sIx |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Jan 06 - 07:20 PM Raptor is not the average Canadian voter. You know why? The average Canadian voter is dead. That's right. The average Canadian voter was John Lawrence McCann of Scarborough, Ontario. In his life John voted for the Liberals 15 times, the Progressive Conservatives 6 times, and the New Democrats (or CCF) 3 times. He drank Molson's and rooted for the Leafs half the time and the Canadiens the other half of the time. He went snowshoeing. He owned cars made by Ford, Chrysler, and GM. He married young and had 2 and a half kids. The world he knew is gone, man, gone forever. It was a world of mounties, royal family, lead soldiers, hockey without helmets, and wooden sleds. It was a world where a kid saved up to get a BB gun, not a Playstation. Gum cost a penny or less. You put baseball cards on your bicycle wheels and made catapults out of wooden clothespegs. You had metal animal toys that ran on the floor and shot sparks out of their mouth. Those were the days when the Conservatives actually were Conservative. Now they are anything but. Now here's my suggestion: Raptor, you rent a fishing hut. You and Dave the ancient mariner hole up in it for a week or so and fish and talk politics. If you're both still alive after that, we all go out and celebrate at the Chinese buffet. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Jan 06 - 01:15 PM It's not that I'm precisely blaming the big corporations for everything... I'm just saying that the party sytem cannot truly represent the general public, given that their primary funding does not come from the general public, it comes from the big business community. Thus, legislation will be crafted in order to meet the needs and desires of the big business community. The big business community seeks maximum profit. (naturally) Maximum profits are not likely in accord with maximum benefit to the general society. For instance, if there is cheaper labour in China, guess where your jobs are going to go? The parties are necessarily forced to say one thing (in order to get elected) and do another much of the time. This makes them hypocrites and turns the public into embittered cynics. None of that is conducive to good government. Neither is it conducive to a healthy society to divide people up into competing partisan teams and set them against each other. You see the fallout from it constantly on this very forum. It's divisive and destructive. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Peace Date: 18 Jan 06 - 11:50 AM "Dear Peace and six......grow up." Guest, I have voted in every election I was allowed to for forty years now. What your grow up statement says to me is that possibly you think things are fine. They are not from my view. I live in Alberta, arguably the richest province in Canada. No provincial debt. Money comin' out the yinyang. And over 20% of the children in this province live below the poverty level. That is one in five kids. About 75% of the single moms in this province default on their child-support/spouse-support payments. When education dollars were cut, the first programs that took the hit were programs for special needs kids. When social services took a cut, the poorest of the poor took the hit. When this government needed money it also took from health care--and now they are trying really hard to get many clinics to privatize--and clinics that then become for-profit places begin to separte the rich and poor even further. Perhaps you have no concern for those who need help. (Maybe you do, and we just perceive very different ways to accomplish that.) However, you remark to me (and six, although I don't know if it offened him--so, I'll speak only for myself--is the cheap kind of shit that gets said by people I tend not to like. I expect you are a regular who lacks the intestinal fortutitude to post as who you are. That then says lots more about you than it does about me. Have a nice day. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: number 6 Date: 18 Jan 06 - 11:34 AM And it aint gonna happen LH. Blaming it all on big rich corporations is rather weak ... society has some responsibility there ... we are a society of consumers, buyers and we will sacrifice all to feed our own greed, which in turn ignites the the big greedy coporations to demand more of their own greed ... we are all the victims and responsible for our own demise due to greed. Actually I think we should go back to having kings and queens who possess absolute power .., If we happen to live under the reign of a good king and live in Camelot all the better, if we happen to live under a reign of a despot, well, tuff luck. Hmmmm, sorta like these days under a democratic government isn't it. sIx |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Jan 06 - 11:23 AM No, it's not that exactly. The problem is that artificial entities called "political parties" control the $ySStem. They are beholden to their primary funding sources. Their primary funding sources are major corporations, banks, and other large financial entities of that sort, plus a consortium of very rich people who have traditionally owned and controlled those entities. You can figure it out from there. Political parties cannot be depended upon to represent the general public (although they always pretend to). They also divide the general public against one another by creating great hostility against the party or parties you don't support. These party line divisions cause a lot of long term stress and hatred in a society, to no useful purpose whatsoever. The only way you could possibly clean up this mess would be: 1. abolish all political parties forever. 2. select candidates in some other manner than party conventions (Perhaps by local nominations? Perhaps by lot among those qualified and willing to serve?) 3. fund ALL candidates' campaigns equally from a public fund, so as to remove lobbyists from controlling politicians and influencing policy. 4. the government then formed would have to work as a cooperative group, forming committees, discussing and debating legislation and policy, and voting on it. 2/3 majority would be required to ratify legislation. You would not have competing blocs jockeying against each other in the government, you would have an assembly of independent individuals who would have to work things out as they went. This would be far more like real democracy than the party-controlled system we have now. Guess what. It ain't gonna happen. ;-) Why would the rich and powerful of this land give away their control to the ordinary public when they don't have to? |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Canadians Read This!!! From: number 6 Date: 18 Jan 06 - 11:16 AM To put it simply ... we get what we voted in. I am speaking of democratic nations specifically. And that's the way it should be .... not saying I like what I see voted in, but the majority obviously wanted it that way. So ... yes, the majority gets what it deserves. If society has a shitty way of looking at life ... it's wants are the cheapest goods to be bought, they ignore the environment for want of things, they ignore the plight of the humanist side of life for the want of things, well, they get what they deserve. sIx |

The issue of private medicare plans is a red herring as almost all working Canadians belong to a "Private Health Plan". The Conservative Government of Nova Scotia did a great deal that was Detrimental to Health services in NS, then they blamed it on the feds. |

Jean Chretien said "I won't touch your social programs" He was elected and promptly had Mr Martin (finance Minister) cut transfer payments to all provinces, which really destroyed hospital services and beds in Nova Scotia. He also failed to live up to his promises of eliminating the GST and failed miserably to secure decent wage increases for anyone. All the jobs he claims to have created are part time low paying benefitless service industry jobs and he is proud of that?So much for the great social Liberals. Now we have Mr Harper who promises to cut the GST, cut taxes, and repair our medicare system, the Liberals declare foul and use the same scare tactics they used before. Sorry, there are now enough Candians who see through that; and hopefully we will get a government that will actually do some good for our country instead of raping it for personal benefit.
