"The Anniversary Waltz. The start goes 'Oh how we danced on the night we were wed'. Specially good if it is a jewish wedding. More than 40 years old, but had a revival when it was sung in the Al Jolson story some years ago."

Geeziz.....I don't think that one is real appropriate. Now I may have it wrong, but the only lines I have ever heard that come next are:

Oh how we danced on the night we were wed.
I gave you my heart
But you wouldn't give head.

I don't think that would be very good for most weddings, although......................

dermod, the song that goes "O how we danced on the night we were wed ..." is actually titled "The Anniversary Song." (Al Jolson co-wrote it, based on music by Ivanici, and recorded it.)

"The Anniversary Waltz" is a different song that starts "Tell me I may always dance the Anniversary Waltz with you ..." (maybe slight paraphrase).

Both those songs have lyrics really more suited to something like a 25th wedding anniversary. (But then, it's not my wedding, so what do I know?)

"Hawaiian Wedding Song" was already mentined, scrum. Shame on you! *g*
But I might add that I love singing the Hawaiian lyrics ("Ke Kali Nei") even more than the English ones.

A couple I don't think were mentioned above (apologies if they were):

The Wedding - a UK hit for Julie Rogers in the 1960s
Hawaiian Wedding Song - also recorded by her, and others
To The Aisle - The Five Satins

And for light relief how about:

It Should Have Been Me - recorded by Gladys Knight & The Pips, and Yvonne Fair
DIVORCE - Tammy Wynette (or the Billy Connolly version for more laughs)

We did a wedding last year where they asked us specifically to do "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" (Holland, Dozier, Holland 1964) as performed by James Taylor. We also threw in "Never Ending Love" as performed by Bonnie & Delaney and "Mon Vrai Destin" by PP&M, same time period.

I don't know where you are but if it's anywhere in central Scotland and if I am in any way acquainted with the parties involved, please cross me off the invitation list if they're going to play ANYTHING suggested so far in this thread.

Or if they're really going to do "Annie's Song", let me know in enough time that I can hire a flamethrower.

Plenty of time yet muppitz.
How about singing a non-folk song, chosen to be meaningful to the age group who are getting married (no good having something that us old hippies know if your friends are under 40), and then getting them to join in the chorus of that good old folk song "Get a little table". So suitable for today's equal opportunities society! Well maybe some other folk song then.

Wow!!
Thank you all so much, there's loads I could use here!

Villan, I am NOT singing for my own wedding as I'm not actually getting married, I hear you have to have a partner for that sort of thing! (Something which I seem to have trouble finding!)

Actually, "True Love," "Love Me Tender," and "What A Wonderful World" were on that long list of popular wedding songs I found and posted above. And "It Had To Be You" has got to be one of the favorite songs in the retirement communities where I do music (folks who were teenagers in the 1930s-1940s).    I just didn't post all of them, especially if they were popular before 1960 or 1970 (unless they've been recently covered).

If you want to go back before 1960, one of my favorite love songs is "L'Hymne A L'Amour" by Edith Piaf, which was a huge hit in the US as Jo Stafford's "If You Love Me."   A very powerful song.

Well, since you specifically requested non-folk type songs, I'm not going to suggest any folk-type songs. :-)

"My Only Love" was a hit for the Statler Brothers on the country charts in 1984(?). It's an actual wedding song (not just a love song), and it's not "too country."

"One Hand, One Heart" goes back more than 40 years, but being from "West Side Story" it's likely somewhat familiar to your audience. Again, it's an actual wedding song. I find it to be lovely and elegantly simple.

We had these songs as part of our wedding, and it's been 22 years now, so they must work! :-)

We used "What A Wonderful World" for our first dance. (That would be the one made famous by Louis Armstrong, among others. NOT the "Don't know much about history" one...).

A friend sang "Love Me Tender" for a wedding. It actually is a very nice wedding song.

Here's a few more suggestions, as if you don't already have more than enough to choose from

Did You Know (Don McLean recorded it, not sure if he wrote it)
It Had To Be You (Words & music: Gus Kahn & Isham Jones)
Dream a Little Dream of Me (I don't know writer/performer)

And for a lighter touch,
Side By Side (don't know)

I sang Don McLean's 'Did You Know (that love can grow)' at a friend's wedding, and it drew quite a satisfying amount of sniffling.

I see some of the ones on my list(s) were suggested while I was looking up links.

Here's a list I found that's supposed to be currently popular wedding songs.   Some have the same titles as some standards or oldies from the '50s and '60s, so I'm not sure if they're new songs or covers of those older hits/standards.
E.g., "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You," "Always," and "From This Moment On" are titles that each represent at least two completely different love/wedding songs.

Anyway, here's the list:

98 Degrees - I Do
Ace Of Base - Its A Beautiful Life
Alanis Morissette - Head Over Feet
All For One - So Much In Love
Allison Krauss - When You Say Nothing At All
Amy Grant - When I Look Into Your Heart (feat. Vince Gill)
Andy Gibb - I Just Want To Be Your Everything
Anna Nalick - Forever Love
Backstreet Boys - As Long As You Love Me
The Beatles - Here, There & Everywhere
Billy Joel - Just The Way You Are
Bob Carlile - Butterfly Kisses
Bon Jovi - Thank You For Loving Me
Boyz to Men - I Swear
Boyzone - I Love The Way You Love Me
Christian Music - Love Will Be Our Home (Christian Wedding Songs)
Clint Blank - When I Said I Do
Dave Matthews Band - Love of My Life (feat. Carlos Santana)
Dido - Thank You
DJ Sammy - Heaven
Don Henley - On My Wedding Day
Jennifer Rush - Power Of Love
Elvis Presley - I Can't Help Falling In Love With You
Elton John - Your Song
Hank Snow - With This Ring I Thee Wed
Jim Brickman & Michael W. Smith - You Are The Love Of My Life
John Denver - Perhaps Love
Josh Groban - I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You (feat. Tina Arena)
K-Ci & JoJo---All My Life (Same as the Ingram-Ronstadt song?)
Keith Urban - Making Memories of Us
Kenny Loggins - Danny's Song (I'm So In Love With You, Honey) - 1st and last verses
Life House - I Live My Life For You
Lifehouse - Hanging By A Moment
Lifehouse - You And Me
Lifehouse - You Belong To Me
Lonestar - Good Morning Beautiful
Mandy Moore - I Want To Be With You
Martina Mcbride - I Love You (Runaway Bride Soundtrack)
Martina McBride - Valentine
Mary Chapin Carpenter - Grow Old Along With Me
Michael Buble - You Belong To Me (probably the old Jo Stafford hit)
Moulin Rouge Soundtrack - Come What May
Nat King Cole & Natalie Cole - Unforgetable
N'Sync - This I Promise You
Randy Travis - Forever And Ever, Amen
Rick Astley - Together Forever
Savage Garden - Truly Madly Deeply
Sawyer Brown - Thank God For You
Sawyer Brown - With This Ring
Shania Twain - From This Moment On
Stacy Q - Two Of Hearts
Surface - Shower Me With Your Love
The Carpenters - We've Only Just Begun
The Turtles - So Happy Together
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill - It's Your Love
Sade - By Your Side

Then there's the old Motown song "The Way You Do The Things You Do" (covered reggae-style by UB40) or one of my favorites, "I Can't Help Myself" (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch).

When my brother was getting married (again) recently and looking for wedding songs, I jokingly suggested "Wild Thing" (the Trogs?).    He actually USED it (a short clip) as he and our dad (the minister) and the ushers entered the chapel! *g*

Oops. "Always And Forever" was recorded by Luther Vandross.

Several popular wedding songs here:
Something That We Do (Clint Black)
popular love song lyrics from last few decades: A - F
Years From Now (R Cook/C Cochran)
When I Said "I Do" (Clint Black)
(Forever Yours) Faithfully - by Journey
I Could Not Ask For More
Me And You (K. Chesney)
This Is The Night
Truly (Lionel Richie)

Love Of My Life (Dave Matthews Band)
Love Of My Life (Jim Brickman)
I Know How The River Feels
Look What Love Has Done (R. Mathes, S. Lewis)
Could I Have This Dance (For The Rest Of My Life)
Everything I Have

Other popular wedding songs (some kind of overused):
Looking Through The Eyes Of Love (Carole Bayer Sager & Marvin Hamlisch)
To Each His Own (another oldie that's been covered recently by contemporary artists)
Amazed (sung by Lonestar)
Endless Love (sung by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross)
The Prayer (Carole Bayer Sager & David Foster)
The Rose (by Amanda McBroom, recorded by Bette Midler)
Unchained Melody (On the charts in the 1950s, '60s, '90s, and 2000s)
Hawaiian Wedding Song
Ebb Tide - another standard
Not as "folky" as some of Tom's others, and a great wedding song:
Outward Bound (Tom Paxton)

And I know you're not looking for folk songs, but you really should check out John Prine's song (duet with Nanci Griffith, I think) "In Spite Of Ourselves"   (if only for the reception).

I sang Fields of Gold (Eva Cassidy's version) at my niece's wedding and it went down a treat.

Eva herself said that she sang You Take My Breath Away at weddings.

I confess I have also sung Never Wed an Old Man!

It was however upstaged at one wedding by the bridegroom's madrigal group singing A Long Prick (musical notation term and double entendre of the era.)

Bliss to the happy,
Chris

A friends has asked me to do a set at her wedding next year and I need some ideas for appropriate songs, bearing in mind that the audience is a non-folky one so I'm looking for mainstream/chart stuff anything from the last 30/40 years or so.
I've had a search and I can only find threads that suggest folk songs so any suggestions would be appreciated and if guitar chords are available too that would be fantastic!
