Subject: Lyr Add: THE BALLAD OF FORTY DOLLARS (Tom T. Hall) From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Nov 19 - 01:32 AM THE BALLAD OF FORTY DOLLARS Words and music by Tom T. Hall As recorded by Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings on "Heroes" (1986) The man that preached the fun'ral said it really was a simple way to die. He laid down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes. They hired me an' Fred an' Joe to dig the grave and carry up some chairs. It took us seven hours, and I guess we must have drunk a case of beer. Well, I guess I ought to go and watch 'em put him down, but I don’t own a suit. And anyway, when they start talkin' 'bout the fire in hell, I get spooked. So let’s just sit here in the truck, and act like we don’t know him when they pass. Anyway, when they're all through, we got to go to work and mow the grass. Here they come, and who’s that ridin' in that big old shiny limousine? Look at all that chrome! I do believe that that’s the sharpest thing I've seen. That must belong to his rich uncle; someone said he owned a big old farm. When they get parked, let’s mosey down and look it over; that won’t do no harm. That must be the widow in the car, and won’t you take a look at that? That sure is a pretty dress; you know some women do look good in black. He’s not even in the ground, and they tell me his truck is up for sale. They say she took it pretty hard, but you can’t tell too much behind a veil. Listen, ain't that pretty when a bugler plays the military taps? Yeah, I think that when you's in the war, they always hide and play a song like that. Well, here we are, and there he goes, and I guess that you might call it our bad luck. I hope he rests in peace, but the trouble is, the feller owes us forty bucks. - - - Also recorded by Tom T. Hall. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GET RHYTHM (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Dec 19 - 05:49 PM This song was mentioned by Fortunato on 25-Sep-2001: GET RHYTHM Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash as a single (Sun #7, 1969) CHORUS 1: Hey, get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. Get a rock 'n' roll feelin' in your bones, Put taps on your toes and get gone. Get rhythm when you get the blues. 1. A little shoeshine boy he never gets lowdown, But he's got the dirtiest job in town. Bendin' low at the people's feet On the windy corner of a dirty street. Well, I asked him while he shined my shoes, How'd he keep from gettin' the blues. He grinned as he raised his little head. He popped a shoeshine rag and then he said: CHORUS 2: Get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. A jumpy rhythm makes you feel so fine. It'll shake all your trouble from your worried mind. Get rhythm when you get the blues. INSTRUMENTAL VERSE CHORUS 1: Get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. Get a rock 'n' roll feelin' in your bones, Put taps on your toes and get gone. Get rhythm when you get the blues. 2. Well, I sat down to listen to the shoeshine boy, And I thought I was gonna jump for joy. Slapped on the shoe polish left and right, He took his shoeshine rag and he held it tight. He stopped once to wipe the sweat away. I said: "You're mighty little, boy, to be a-workin' that way." He said: "I like it" with a big wide grin, Kept on a-poppin' and he'd say it again: CHORUS 3: Get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. It only costs a dime, just a nickel a shoe. It does a million dollars worth o' good for you. Get rhythm when you get the blues. |

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm, A boy filled with wanderlust who really meant no harm. He changed his clothes and shined his boots and combed his dark hair down, And his mother cried as he walked out: CHORUS: "Don't take your guns to town, son. Leave your guns at home, Bill. Don't take your guns to town." 2. He laughed and kissed his mom and said: "Your Billy Joe's a man. I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can, But I wouldn't shoot without a cause; I'd gun nobody down." But she cried again as he rode away: CHORUS 3. He sang a song as on he rode; his guns hung at his hips. He rode into a cattle town, a smile upon his lips. He stopped and walked into a bar and laid his money down, But his mother's words echoed again: CHORUS 4. He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shakin' hand, And tried to tell himself at last he had become a man. A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down, And he heard again his mother's words: CHORUS 5. Filled with rage, then Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw, But the stranger drew his gun and fired before he even saw. As Billy Joe fell to the floor, the crowd all gathered 'round And wondered at his final words: CHORUS |
Subject: Lyr Add: DRIVE ON (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Dec 19 - 06:17 PM This song was mentioned by mgarvey on 25-Sep-2001: DRIVE ON Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash as a single (American 7-18091, 1994) 1. Well, I got a friend named Whiskey Sam. He was my boonie-rat buddy for a year in 'Nam. He said: "I think my country got a little off track. Took 'em twenty-five years to welcome me back, But it's better than not comin' back at all. Many a good man I saw fall, And even now, ev'ry time I dream, I hear the men and the monkeys in the jungle scream." CHORUS: Drive on; it don't mean nothin'. My children love me, but they don't understand, An' I got a woman who knows her man. Drive on; it don't mean nothin'. It don't mean nothin'; drive on. 2. Well, I remember one night, Tex and me Rappelled in on a hot LZ. We had our sixteens on rock 'n' roll, And with all o' that fire, I was scared 'n' cold. I was crazy, and I was wild, And I have seen the tiger's smile. I spit in a bamboo viper's face, And I'd be dead but by God's grace. CHORUS 3. It was a slow walk in a sad rain, And nobody tried to be John Wayne. I came home, but Tex did not, And I can't talk about the hit he got, But I got a little limp now when I walk, And I got a little tremolo when I talk, But my letter read from Whiskey Sam: You're a walkin' talkin' miracle from Vietnam. Subject: Lyr Add: I WALK THE LINE (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Dec 19 - 06:24 PM This song was mentioned by "53" on 26-Sep-2001: I WALK THE LINE Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "I Walk the Line" (1964) I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. I keep the ends out for the tie that binds. Because you're mine, I walk the line. I find it very, very easy to be true. I find myself alone when each day's through. Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you. Because you're mine, I walk the line. As sure as night is dark and day is light, I keep you on my mind both day and night, And happiness I've known proves that it's right. Because you're mine, I walk the line. You've got a way to keep me on your side. You give me cause for love that I can't hide. For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide. Because you're mine, I walk the line. I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. I keep the ends out for the tie that binds. Because you're mine, I walk the line. |

Subject: Lyr Add: WITHOUT LOVE (from Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 07 Dec 19 - 06:41 PM This song was mentioned by Paddy(1) on 26-Sep-2001; WITHOUT LOVE Words and music by Nick Lowe As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Rockabilly Blues" (1981) Without love, I am half human. Without love, I'm all machine. Without love, there's nothin' doin'. I will die without love. Without love, I am an island all by myself in a heartbreak sea. Without love, there's no denyin' I am dyin' without love. For there is nowhere I can run and there is no hidin' place, Stickin' out like a sore thumb by that gloomy look upon my face. Without love, I'm incomplete. Without love, I am not whole. Without love, I'm barely on my feet. I am dyin' without love. For there is nowhere I can run. I am dyin' without love. |
Subject: Lyr Add: OLD APACHE SQUAW (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 10:53 AM This song was mentioned by kendall on 26-Sep-2001: (By the way, I think the term "squaw" is considered derogatory nowadays.) OLD APACHE SQUAW Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Songs of Our Soil" (1959) Old Apache squaw, how many long lean years you saw? How many bitter winter nights shiverin' in a cold tepee, shiverin' in a cold tepee? Old Apache squaw, how many hungry kids you saw? How many bloody warriors runnin' to the sea, fleein' to the sea? Well, now they tell me that you saw Cochise When he made his last stand. He said: "The next white man that sees my face Is gonna be a dead white man." Old Apache squaw, how many broken hearts you saw? Have you had misty eyes for years? Could that mist be tears? Could that mist be tears? Well, now they tell me that you saw Cochise When he made his last stand He said, "The next white man that sees my face Is gonna be a dead white man" Old Apache squaw, how many broken hearts you saw? You've had misty eyes for years. Could that mist be tears? Could that mist be tears? Old Apache squaw. |
Subject: Lyr Add: HANK AND JOE AND ME (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 10:57 AM This song was quoted by kendall on 26-Sep-2001, although he didn't know the title: HANK AND JOE AND ME Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Songs of Our Soil" (1959) In the desert where we searched for gold, The days are hot; the nights are cold. Hank and Joe and me walked on So bold and brave and free. For days and days, we fought the heat. I got so thirsty and I got so weak, And when I fell 'cause I couldn't go, I heard Hank say to Joe: "He's dyin' (dyin', dyin') For water. Hear him cryin' (cryin', cryin') For water. "Well, lay him down in the dust and sand." He said, "Joe, you know he's a dyin' man. Leave him there and let him die. I can't stand to hear him cry For water. I don't remember how long I lay, But when I awoke, it was the break of day. Buzzards circled miles ahead. I knew Hank and Joe were dead. My eyes were dimmed but I could see A bed of gold nuggets under me. Now I know that it won't be long Till they decorate my bones. 'Cause I'm dyin' (dyin', dyin') For water. Can't help cryin' (cryin', cryin') For water. Well, they laid me down in the dust and sand. He said: "Joe, you know he's a dyin' man. Leave him there and let him die. I can't stand to hear him cry For water." He couldn't stand to hear me cry For water. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GOIN' BY THE BOOK (from Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 11:52 AM This song was mentioned by headeast on 29-Jan-2006: GOIN' BY THE BOOK Words and music by Chester Lester As recorded by Johnny Cash on "The Mystery of Life" (1990) You can see it in the movies and the paper and the TV news. Somebody's army is always on the move. There's gonna be a battle; the lines have been drawn; they got guns an' tanks an' planes. The wells have gone dry and the water is bad and the air is acid rain. There's war after war and rumors of war from the east. There's a rumblin' in the ground and they're talkin' about the beast. Good mothers cry 'cause the rivers run high with the blood of too many sons. Some people say peace is on the way, but the worst is still to come. CHORUS: 'Cause the prophets wrote about it and Jesus spoke about it and John got to take a look. And he told us what he saw and it's easy to see it's goin' by the book. It's goin' by the book. There's armies in the cities and the missiles stand ready for flight. A pale horse rides like the wind across the night. And that rumblin' in the desert like thunder gettin' closer are the trumpets gettin' ready to blow. There's gonna be a shout that'll wake the dead; we better be ready to go. CHORUS |
Subject: Lyr Add: WALKING THE BLUES (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 12:21 PM This song was mentioned by AR282 on 13-Feb-2006: WALKING THE BLUES Words and music by Johnny Cash and Robert Lunn As recorded by Johnny Cash on "The Legend" (2005) Well I went down the store; I got some brand-new shoes. I told 'em: "Make the leather tough; I gotta walk the blues." CHORUS: Walkin the blues, I'm walkin the blues all day, all day long, I'm wearin' out my shoes but I'm walkin' the blues away. Well my baby's got a heart like a cold north wind. I walk until I find 'er, bring 'er back again. CHORUS: I'm walkin' the blues.... Well, now, the man down at the station, he won't even talk. He said: "If you ain't got no money, boy, then you gotta walk." CHORUS: That's why I'm walkin' the blues.... [Also recorded by Maria Muldaur on "Johnny's Blues: A Tribute to Johnny Cash" (2003)] |
Subject: Lyr Add: MAN IN BLACK (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 12:56 PM This song was mentioned by Muttley on 16-Feb-2007: MAN IN BLACK Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Man in Black" (1971) Well, you wonder why I always dress in black, Why you never see bright colors on my back, And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone? Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on. I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side o' town. I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime But is there because he's a victim of the times. I wear the black for those who've never read Or listened to the words that Jesus said About the road to happiness through love and charity. Why, you'd think He's talkin' straight to you and me. Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose, In our streak o' lightnin' cars and fancy clothes, But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back, Up front there ought to be a man in black. I wear it for the sick and lonely old, For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold. I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been. Each week we lose a hundred fine young men. And, I wear it for the thousands who have died Believin' that the Lord was on their side. I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died Believin' that we all were on their side. Well, there's things that never will be right, I know, And things need changin' ev'rywhere you go, But till we start to make a move to make a few things right, You'll never see me wear a suit of white. Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow ev'ry day And tell the world that ev'rything's okay, But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back. Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black. |
Subject: Lyr Add: MEAN EYED CAT (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:03 PM This song was mentioned by fumblefingers on 09-Mar-2007: MEAN EYED CAT Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Sings Hank Williams and Other Favorite Tunes" (1960) 1. I give my woman half my money at the gen'ral store. I said: "Now buy a little groceries and don't spend no more." Then she paid ten dollars for a ten-cent hat And got some store-bought cat food for her mean-eyed cat. When I give her ten more dollars for a one-way ticket, She was mad as she could be. Then I bet ten more that if she ever left, She'd come a-crawlin' back to me. 2. When I woke up this mornin' and I turned my head, There wasn't a cotton-pickin' thing on her side of the bed. I found a little old note where her head belonged. It said: "Dear John, honey, baby, I'm long gone." When I heard a whistle blowin' and the big wheels a-turnin', I was scared as I could be. I put on my overalls and I headed for town. I'm gonna bring her back with me. 3. I asked the man down at the station if he had seen her there. I told him all about her pretty eyes and long blonde hair. He spit his tobacco, said: "I'll be dad-blamed. I b'lieve I did see her leavin' on the east-bound train." I bought a round-trip ticket on the east-bound train. I was broke as I could be, But when I come back, I got to buy another ticket, Gonna bring her back with me. 4. Well, I got off the train somewhere in Arkansas, And I worked up the guts to call my mother-in-law. She said: "I'll tell you where she is, if you act right. She's workin' four-to-twelve at Trucker's World tonight." Well, when I walked in, she saw me and she took off her apron And she grabbed her goin'-home hat. She bought a ticket with her tips. Now we're curled up on the sofa, Me and her and that mean-eyed cat. [The recording on "Sings Hank Williams and Other Favorite Tunes" omits verse 4. The recording on "American II: Unchained" omits the second half of verse 1.] |
Subject: Lyr Add: SMILING BILL MCCALL (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:08 PM This song was mentioned by fumblefingers on 09-Mar-2007: SMILING BILL MCCALL Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash as a single (Columbia 4-41618, 1960) Well, the whole town listened to the radio For the Smilin' Bill McCall Show. Ev'ryone in Nashville Was listenin' to Bill. "I don't want to be layin' in bed When they pronounce me dead." He'd stand and breathe in the microphone With his guitar hangin' to his knee bone. All the girls just sat and dreamed When Bill began to sing. "I don't want my hat to be hung When my last song is sung." But he never let fame go to his head "This is Smilin' Bill McCall," he said. "Gonna pick and sing a song or two Y'all listen till I'm through. "And if you're at the house or in your car, Tune in this time tomorr'." To all the boys he was a big hero. They'd glue their ears to the radio, Then talk in a most unusual drawl Imitatin' Bill McCall. "Daddy, can I get me a guitar? 'Cause I want to be a star." The girls would say of Bill McCall: "Why, I bet he's over six feet tall. Handsomest man in Nashville!" They said of Smilin' Bill. He won't be plantin' potato slips When he cashes in his chips. Then one day Bill didn't make the show. Didn't even show up for a week or so. The station's boss said to City Hall: "Find Smilin' Bill McCall." It won't be hard to track him down. He's got the biggest feet in town. Well, there's a creek that runs through Nashville And on the bank they found Smilin' Bill. He's committin' suicide, But they grabbed him 'fore he tried. "Turn me loose, I'm 'onna jump," he screamed, "'Cause I can't stand that theme. "Let this be my final breath, 'Cause I'm scared to half to death." The big brave Smilin' Bill McCall Is only four feet tall. "I'd rather be in the river dead Than to hear 'em laughin' at my bald head." |

What do I care? [§] What do I care, just as long as you were mine a little while? When the road was long and weary, you gave me a few good mile. What do I care if I miss a goal because I make a slip? I'll still be satisfied because I tasted your sweet lips. What do I care if I never have much money? And sometimes my table looks a little bare? Anything that I may miss is made up for each time we kiss. You love me and I love you, so what do I care? [Repeat from §.] |

We never know which way the wind will blow Nor when and where the next turmoil will be, But he's a solid rock in trouble's flow And he holds out a saving hand for me. CHORUS 2. Subject: Lyr Add: NEXT IN LINE (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:55 PM This song was mentioned by James on 20-Oct-2003: NEXT IN LINE Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash as a single (Sun 266, 1957) The next in line will be someone who loves you. The next in line is me, 'cause it's my time. Now how long will it be Till you end my misery? You better be prepared to linger when you get to me. The time has come for you to love me, if you ever are. Come to me now, so I can make you mine. I watched them rush to you so fast. I waited so I'd be the last. It's my time 'cause I'm the next in line. The next in line will want your love forever. The next in line is me and here I am. Give me a day or two And I'll get through to you. You'd 'a' been my baby long ago, if you'd turned down a few. This ol' heart can't take much more waitin' for your love. I'm tired and we're runnin' short o' time. I'll make you love me more Than ev'ryone before. My time to try 'cause I'm the next in line. I stood and watched you take their hearts and break 'em one by one. My time was comin', so I waited while you had your fun. Now I'm through a-waitin' way behind. It's my time 'cause I'm the next in line. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash Songs From: Joe MacGillivray Date: 27 Dec 19 - 05:03 AM Big River. I see mentioned above that someone was working on the F#7 to B7 transition. I'm not sure how well known this is, but Johnny also played another chord in this song that doesn't normally appear in tabs online. It's at the end of each verse. When that e string 3-3-3-0 riff at the end of each verse is played, (and when that phrase is played in the solo) he plays an interesting G / E like chord, where he puts his ring finger on the third fret of the E and plays this E/G chord. (E with a G bass, to coincide with the note of the riff). I hope I'm describing it right. I've been a huge fan of Johnny's for years. He has been a tremendous influence on my music. |
