Subject: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: alanabit Date: 10 Feb 09 - 09:04 AM Here is a clip of the late Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. I would be interested in any more background information from Mudcatters about the remarkable prison recordings and the astonishing resonance they had. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: alanabit Date: 10 Feb 09 - 09:44 AM I first became aware of the San Quentin concert, which must have been around Christmas 1969. I only caught up with the Folsom Prison recordings later. Seminal stuff though, wasn't it? |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: wysiwyg Date: 10 Feb 09 - 11:04 AM Bill Gaither produced a Cash gospel special that included Folsom footage and background. Numerous other Cash tribute documentaries also have covered the Folsom experience. I don't know how you would find these, but they'd have tons of stuff you'd love. ~Susan |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: bankley Date: 10 Feb 09 - 11:23 AM Someone asked Merle Haggard once, if he had heard the San Quentin record. Merle said 'I was there', the interviewer said "I didn't know you were playing that show"... Merle replied, " I wasn't.. I was in the audience" "I'm on the run, the highway is my home" |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: frogprince Date: 10 Feb 09 - 03:48 PM Somewhere on TV, a few years ago, I heard Merle recall a discussion that he had with Johnny, right at the time he (Merle) started performing professionally. He asked Johnny's advise on what to say, or not say, about his prison record. Johnny just told him to be totally honest about it. |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 10 Feb 09 - 05:35 PM I don't think Merle Haggard was at THAT San Quentin concert - the one that is on record. Merle Haggard was in San Quentin in the late 1950's and that was when he saw Cash there. The concert that is on record was recorded in the 1960's. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: Beer Date: 10 Feb 09 - 10:41 PM Well ,I give up. To many to look at. Got distracted by others like Jim Croce, Cosby Still and Nash and Young and others. But San Quentin A/P is in front of me. A sticker on the cellophane states; "Features the hit A Boy Named Sue". |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: Ron Davies Date: 10 Feb 09 - 11:05 PM The CD of this you can get now is much longer than the original record which came out in the 60's. Can't lay my hands on it now. But as I recall, it has at least one cut sung by June--I think with at least one sister. Anyway, both the Folsom Prison and the San Quentin CD's are just great--lots more on them than on the vinyl. |
Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: Bluegrassman Date: 11 Feb 09 - 08:17 PM Unknown Merle Travis was in San Quentin for three years for robbing a Tavern in Bakersfield and legend has it that when Johnny Cash did the show there in 1958, Merle was inspired to write the great song "Sing me back home" and that also put Merle on the almost straight and narrow on his release. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison From: bankley Date: 12 Feb 09 - 09:21 PM Thanks Gene ... that's the Hag story.... he was later given a pardon by Reagan.... and later sang in the Whitehouse "I wish Coke was still cola and a joint was a bad place to be, Back before Nixon lied to us all on TV " "Is the best of the free life behind us now, Are the good times really over for good ?" |
