Subject: JOHNNY CASH SONG'S From: 53 Date: 25 Sep 01 - 01:18 PM How many Mudcatters out there like Big River by Johnny Cash? It was one of the first Sun recordings in Memphis by the man in black. I think he's great. bob

Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONG'S From: Gary T Date: 25 Sep 01 - 01:47 PM I'm quite fond of the early Cash stuff, like Big River, Understand Your Man, Ring of Fire, etc. I haven't heard much of his recent offerings, but from the little I've encountered, it appears he's still got it. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONG'S From: Fortunato Date: 25 Sep 01 - 01:52 PM 53. I love the song and I still perform it. Oddly enough I heard the Ian and Sylvia cover of it first. Ian Tyson did a good job, but Johnny's had more authority. It works great with a western swing tempo. I also do Get Rhythm from that time. One of these days I'll work up Hey Porter, another favorite. cheers. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONG'S From: 53 Date: 25 Sep 01 - 02:20 PM Fortunato, you're right up my alley. I love the one about the Cadillac car [One Piece at a Time?], but he's got so many great songs it's hard to name them all. I used to perform Folsom Prison Blues and I think that one is great too. bob |

Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: 53 Date: 25 Sep 01 - 06:47 PM Well, Clifton53, I only know of 3 of us 53s. You, Bob and me - I'm Glenda, Bob's wife. But if there are more, let me know! Sometimes I write from work, sometimes from home. I like Johnny Cash too. I'm struggling a bit learning to play with the Big River # because of the quick barre chord F# and straight to a B7, but I'll get there. (Tomorrow is my 6th month anniversary playing guitar.) Glenda |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Clifton53 Date: 25 Sep 01 - 07:29 PM Well, it's nice to meet both of you Glenda and Bob! Anyone who likes John R. Cash and the # 53 has to be alright! |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: GUEST,Roger Date: 25 Sep 01 - 07:38 PM I've got my son almost word perfect on Folsom Prison Blues. He looks very serious as he sings "but I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die...", being 5 he doesn't quite carry the believability of the original. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: 53 Date: 25 Sep 01 - 08:29 PM Clifton, I must confess my "53" stands for the yr of my birth. It was a nickname Bob gave me many years ago when we worked together and were only friends. We got married 2 years ago. Johnny Cash songs I like include Ring of Fire and Folsom Prison Blues but I am just starting to learn to play Ring of Fire. Folsom Prison Blues I've been trying to learn for a while. Glenda |

Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Bert Date: 26 Sep 01 - 05:40 AM yup, I remember that one - GREAT. Here's a song you might like |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: GUEST,Nick Date: 26 Sep 01 - 06:13 AM To Glenda in particular: re that "quick F# chord to the B7" - Cash himself plays that song with a capo on the 2nd fret, using D chord shapes... which makes it a "quick E chord leading to the A7"... and a LOT easier! Have fun Nick |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: 53 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 06:24 AM Nick, Thank you. I am aware of the way to make the song easier exactly as you said. Bob and I talked about that last night, in fact. But I am using this song to help me learn those chords, and it is working. So why stop now and leave the challenge? I play a lot of songs using the capo, but this, for me, needs to be a 'stretch' time. Does that makes sense to you? Glenda |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: 53 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 08:23 AM how about Luther Perkins? he was Johnny's sideman and electric guitar player for a long time. His haunting type of playing was admired by many including Keith Richards and myself, his playing was on I Walk the Line, Big River, Folsom Prison Blues, and Ring of Fire just to mention a few, he was superb. bob |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: 53 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 03:14 PM Has anybody heard Ballad of a Teenage Queen? bob |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Bert Date: 26 Sep 01 - 03:48 PM Ballad of a Teenage Queen was great. It's surprising it isn't heard more, maybe it's a bit too goody-goody for rebellious teens. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Aidan Crossey Date: 26 Sep 01 - 04:37 PM Delia's Gone and Let the Train Blow the Whistle (When I Go) from "American Recordings" ... two great snarling pieces of Cash genius. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Clifton53 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 04:43 PM Ah yes, "Tell the gossipers and liars, I will see them in Hell's fires...." I listened to that very tape today coming home from work. "Drive On" is also a favorite of mine, I am awed by the power in that 3 verse song. Clifton |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: RangerSteve Date: 26 Sep 01 - 04:55 PM I Still Miss Someone is one of those rare C&W songs that I can identify with. And it works great with clawhammer banjo. So does Ballad of a Teenage Queen - a perfect old-time stringband tune. Since there are so many Cash fans here, can someone supply me with the lyrics for a song called "Run Softly Blue River"? I think one of the lines is something like "Roll on, you Blue River, my darling's asleep". It's definitely a Carter Family-influenced song. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: GUEST,Paddy(1) Date: 26 Sep 01 - 04:56 PM Can't believe this thread! - love it
Johnny Cash wrote Forty Shades of Green prior to (or during) a visit some years back. Someone changed the words to suit a girl singer ("so brawny and so brown" instead of "as soft as eiderdown" etc.) No one mentioned Tennessee Flat-Top Box or Without Love (not to mention The Ballad of Ira Hayes). Paddy(1) |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Clifton53 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 05:39 PM Johnny Cash had a television show here in the states some years ago, when he was at his peak of popularity. I was a teen-ager and would stay home that night instead of going out with my friends. They never understood it! He always had musical guests also, and not all mainstream country acts. I believe, though I can't recall fully, he had Bob Dylan on there. I've always admired the way he has taken his own road. Clifton |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Tiger Date: 26 Sep 01 - 05:48 PM Love to see the Cash fans come out - followed him since the mid-50's and do a lot of his songs. Someday, hopefully many, many years from now, I'd like to do a Cash memorial show to show my appreciation. |

Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: kendall Date: 26 Sep 01 - 07:11 PM I've always liked JC. He is different. The first album I ever heard had such gems as Old Apache Squaw. and..leave him there and let him die, I can't stand to hear him cry for water. (don't remember the name of this one) [Hank and Joe and Me] Who's gonna cry when old John dies? Who's gonna cry when Old John dies? [The Caretaker] Does anyone remember this album? goes back to the '50s or very early 60's. |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Sep 01 - 07:59 PM Now folks, before I say this, I like JC. As a matter of fact, when I lived in Nashville, we lived six houses down the road in a home built by one of the guys with Dr. Hook. We were the driveway where the tour buses turned and said, "No one of any importance lives here." In any case.... Ol' John has had some duds too, or at least some stuff that I much prefer by someone else. His rendition of "Lorena" is completely flat emotionally. He made a bit of a hit for Peter LaFarge's "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" that Paddy mentioned, but if you really want to hear that song, try Patrick Sky. Dylan fans may jump me here too, but the stuff on Dylan's "Nashville Skyline" like "Lay, Lady, Lay," really sucks wombat peckers. And that turn he and June did on the 30th Anniversary Dylan tribute was embarrassing. Johnny sang in one key, June sang harmony in a different key and the band was playing in a third key altogether. That said, the series of albums he is doing now is beautiful in its simplicity and natural feel. Wonderful stuff!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: GUEST,Nick Date: 27 Sep 01 - 08:16 AM Glenda - Sure, makes perfect sense to play songs in as many keys as possible as an exercise - not to mention if you end up in a band with someone who wants to (can only!) sing Big River in Ab... !! I'm going to throw in here a gratuitous plug for the Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson). They only made 3 albums (which is still one more than the Traveling Wilburys), but the third in particular (The Road Goes On Forever) is one of my favorite albums. And those four, before they ever got together as a band, were my primary musical influences for MANY years... Nick |

RAGGED OLD FLAG (A recitation, accompanied by music)
I walked through a county courthouse square,
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down."
I said, "Your ol' flagpole has leaned a little bit,
He said, "Have a seat," and I sat down.
I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to brag,
"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
"And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
"And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
"And it almost fell at the Alamo
"She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
"There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
"On Flanders Field in World War One
"She turned blood red in World War Two.
"She was in Korea and Vietnam.
"She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
"In her own good land here she's been abused.
"And the government for which she stands
"And she's gettin' threadbare and wearin' thin,
"'Cause she's been through the fire before
"So we raise her up every mornin', we take her down every night,
"On second thought, I do like to brag, |

Nevermore pain in them old achin' bones. Wings in the mornin' to carry us home. My grandfather lived by the book all his life On rich bottomland with twelve kids and a wife. Subject: RE: JOHNNY CASH SONGS From: Big Al Whittle Date: 30 Sep 04 - 09:45 PM No doubt about it - he was a great songwriter and his songs have helped me earn a living. But what drew me to him was the 1970's. Everybody in England was going Celtic. The DADGAD guitars , the jigs and reel, the agonised quavering vocals with Walter Gabriel accents and we were told this was our lot as English folk singers and this is what we had to sing if we wanted to be welcome in English folk clubs. And the songs......they were all about being a victim. The cruel landlord, the cruel redcoat soldier - they came round and give us a good hiding, then they transported us for doing sod all, and tomorrow we were all going to be hanged......and so it went on. I was living in Birmingham at the time and one night I went to an Irish club - prepared for the worst, if you got asked out for dinner the inevitable background music was The Chieftains playing a 25 minute lament. And there in this club was country music. The Showband scene had fallen apart in Ireland and there loads of brilliant Irish musicians who could play as well as any Nashville cats, playing their hearts out in the country music clubs. they all had fantastic instruments -fender tellys and fender twins. They were so good. Inevitably they told you about their heroes who seemed to be Willie, Waylon, Moe Bandy, Johnny Paycheck - but they all loved Johnny Cash. And you could see why. here was this voice that conveyed that epic sense of self. I am the Captain of my soul, master of my fate, hello I'm Johnny Cash. I've been knocked down by life, but I have dignity. I'm a victim but I'll bust your lip if you try to make feel like one.....thank god for Johnny Cash. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash Songs From: Chris in Wheaton Date: 13 Feb 06 - 01:44 PM the new benefit cd - Hands Across the Water - has a nice version of Johnny's Forty Shades of Green, done by Rodney C - the lyrics on most of the net sites are wrong, but Rodney may have changed a few - but I doubt there was ever a Nashville song before or after that mentioned draining bogs or gleaning thatch!! Subject: RE: Johnny Cash Songs From: Muttley Date: 16 Feb 07 - 07:07 AM Of all the songs I've heard Johnny Cash do I think my favourites have to be: "A Boy Named Sue"- it's catchy, funny and shows his quirky side "Folsom Prison Blues" - cannot believe he wrote so powerfully without having the personal experience at the time. "Big John" - just a good ballad - corny in parts but GOOD. "I Walk the Line" - moving and My absolute favourite: "Man in Black" - says it all BTW - I think his biography is also called "Man In Black" To wax (maybe) controversial; I felt Joaquim Phoenix played him brilliantly in the biopic "Walk the Line" and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter was also superb. I also felt the film portrayed him fairly honestly too - warts and all - no excuses, just - as it was. Muttley Haven't heard some of the others mentioned: didn't grow up un a folky family or one that appreciated Johnny Cash - but I loved his songs when they came on the radio over here (Oz) (which was, unfortunately, an infrequent occurrence. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash Songs From: eddie1 Date: 10 Mar 07 - 12:50 AM I love Johnny Cash's singing and thought the "Luther Perkins sound" of the muffled bass strings was pure genius. Luther's quote, "Other people are looking for the notes - I've found them!" is wonderful. I only have one beef. "The Rebel – Johnny Yuma" is terrible. It sounds as if it was the theme song for a TV series perhaps. Can anyone enlighten me please? Eddie |

Subject: Lyr Add: THESE ARE MY PEOPLE (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Nov 19 - 11:08 PM I’ve been hearing this on TV commercials for Volkswagen lately. It was unfamiliar to me. It was also played at the end of today’s episode of “This American Life.” The episode, number 688, was called “The Out Crowd” and was about asylum-seekers and the new obstacles put in their way by the Trump administration. THESE ARE MY PEOPLE Words and music by Jonny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on “America: A 200-Year Salute in Story & Song” (1972) These are my people. This is the land where my forefathers lie. These are my people. In brotherhood, we’re heirs of a creed to live by, A creed that proclaims That by loved ones’ bloodstains This is my land And these are my people. These are my people. They were born on and live by the land. These are my people, And their cities were raised by hard-working hands And their faces do tell That they’re holding on well To this their land. Yes, these are my people. These are my people. These are the ones who will reach for the stars. These are my people. By the light of the earth you can tell they are ours— A new step to take And a new day will break, For this my land, Yes, these are my people. (spoken) These are my people. (hums rest of verse) (fade) [Not to be confused with other songs with the same title. One was written by Cliff Arquette and Charles G. Dant and recorded by Arquette under his persona "Charlie Weaver." One was written by Walter Colwell and Paul Murphy and was part of the "Up with People" repertoire. One was written by Dave Berg and Rivers Rutherford and recorded by Rodney Atkins. There are more.] |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash Songs From: GUEST,HiLo Date: 17 Nov 19 - 09:16 AM I am a huge fan of Johnny Cash. My favourites of his early stuff are "Come In Stranger" b/w "(I Don't Like It But I) Guess Things Happen That Way". I prefer his Sun recordings to much of what he did at Columbia. He did do an album Called Ride This Train, which was wonderful, it was on Columbia. I don't think it has ever been released as a CD. He did some grand things late in his career, best cover of Leonard Cohen's Bird on a Wire. A real American legend. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BALLAD OF FORTY DOLLARS (Tom T. Hall) From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Nov 19 - 01:32 AM THE BALLAD OF FORTY DOLLARS Words and music by Tom T. Hall As recorded by Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings on "Heroes" (1986) The man that preached the fun'ral said it really was a simple way to die. He laid down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes. They hired me an' Fred an' Joe to dig the grave and carry up some chairs. It took us seven hours, and I guess we must have drunk a case of beer. Well, I guess I ought to go and watch 'em put him down, but I don’t own a suit. And anyway, when they start talkin' 'bout the fire in hell, I get spooked. So let’s just sit here in the truck, and act like we don’t know him when they pass. Anyway, when they're all through, we got to go to work and mow the grass. Here they come, and who’s that ridin' in that big old shiny limousine? Look at all that chrome! I do believe that that’s the sharpest thing I've seen. That must belong to his rich uncle; someone said he owned a big old farm. When they get parked, let’s mosey down and look it over; that won’t do no harm. That must be the widow in the car, and won’t you take a look at that? That sure is a pretty dress; you know some women do look good in black. He’s not even in the ground, and they tell me his truck is up for sale. They say she took it pretty hard, but you can’t tell too much behind a veil. Listen, ain't that pretty when a bugler plays the military taps? Yeah, I think that when you's in the war, they always hide and play a song like that. Well, here we are, and there he goes, and I guess that you might call it our bad luck. I hope he rests in peace, but the trouble is, the feller owes us forty bucks. - - - Also recorded by Tom T. Hall. |

Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. Get a rock 'n' roll feelin' in your bones, Put taps on your toes and get gone. Get rhythm when you get the blues. 1. A little shoeshine boy he never gets lowdown, But he's got the dirtiest job in town. Bendin' low at the people's feet On the windy corner of a dirty street. Well, I asked him while he shined my shoes, How'd he keep from gettin' the blues. He grinned as he raised his little head. He popped a shoeshine rag and then he said: CHORUS 2: Get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. A jumpy rhythm makes you feel so fine. It'll shake all your trouble from your worried mind. Get rhythm when you get the blues. INSTRUMENTAL VERSE CHORUS 1: Get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. Get a rock 'n' roll feelin' in your bones, Put taps on your toes and get gone. Get rhythm when you get the blues. 2. Well, I sat down to listen to the shoeshine boy, And I thought I was gonna jump for joy. Slapped on the shoe polish left and right, He took his shoeshine rag and he held it tight. He stopped once to wipe the sweat away. I said: "You're mighty little, boy, to be a-workin' that way." He said: "I like it" with a big wide grin, Kept on a-poppin' and he'd say it again: CHORUS 3: Get rhythm when you get the blues. Come on, get rhythm when you get the blues. It only costs a dime, just a nickel a shoe. It does a million dollars worth o' good for you. Get rhythm when you get the blues. |

A young cowboy named Billy Joe grew restless on the farm, A boy filled with wanderlust who really meant no harm. He changed his clothes and shined his boots and combed his dark hair down, And his mother cried as he walked out: CHORUS: "Don't take your guns to town, son. Leave your guns at home, Bill. Don't take your guns to town." 2. He laughed and kissed his mom and said: "Your Billy Joe's a man. I can shoot as quick and straight as anybody can, But I wouldn't shoot without a cause; I'd gun nobody down." But she cried again as he rode away: CHORUS 3. He sang a song as on he rode; his guns hung at his hips. He rode into a cattle town, a smile upon his lips. He stopped and walked into a bar and laid his money down, But his mother's words echoed again: CHORUS 4. He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shakin' hand, And tried to tell himself at last he had become a man. A dusty cowpoke at his side began to laugh him down, And he heard again his mother's words: CHORUS 5. Filled with rage, then Billy Joe reached for his gun to draw, But the stranger drew his gun and fired before he even saw. As Billy Joe fell to the floor, the crowd all gathered 'round And wondered at his final words: CHORUS |

Well, I got a friend named Whiskey Sam. He was my boonie-rat buddy for a year in 'Nam. He said: "I think my country got a little off track. Took 'em twenty-five years to welcome me back, But it's better than not comin' back at all. Many a good man I saw fall, And even now, ev'ry time I dream, I hear the men and the monkeys in the jungle scream." CHORUS: Drive on; it don't mean nothin'. My children love me, but they don't understand, An' I got a woman who knows her man. Drive on; it don't mean nothin'. It don't mean nothin'; drive on. 2. Well, I remember one night, Tex and me Rappelled in on a hot LZ. We had our sixteens on rock 'n' roll, And with all o' that fire, I was scared 'n' cold. I was crazy, and I was wild, And I have seen the tiger's smile. I spit in a bamboo viper's face, And I'd be dead but by God's grace. CHORUS 3. It was a slow walk in a sad rain, And nobody tried to be John Wayne. I came home, but Tex did not, And I can't talk about the hit he got, But I got a little limp now when I walk, And I got a little tremolo when I talk, But my letter read from Whiskey Sam: You're a walkin' talkin' miracle from Vietnam. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. I keep the ends out for the tie that binds. Because you're mine, I walk the line. I find it very, very easy to be true. I find myself alone when each day's through. Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you. Because you're mine, I walk the line. As sure as night is dark and day is light, I keep you on my mind both day and night, And happiness I've known proves that it's right. Because you're mine, I walk the line. You've got a way to keep me on your side. You give me cause for love that I can't hide. For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide. Because you're mine, I walk the line. I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. I keep the ends out for the tie that binds. Because you're mine, I walk the line. |

Without love, I'm all machine. Without love, there's nothin' doin'. I will die without love. Without love, I am an island all by myself in a heartbreak sea. Without love, there's no denyin' I am dyin' without love. For there is nowhere I can run and there is no hidin' place, Stickin' out like a sore thumb by that gloomy look upon my face. How many bitter winter nights shiverin' in a cold tepee, shiverin' in a cold tepee? Old Apache squaw, how many hungry kids you saw? How many bloody warriors runnin' to the sea, fleein' to the sea? Well, now they tell me that you saw Cochise When he made his last stand. He said: "The next white man that sees my face Is gonna be a dead white man." Old Apache squaw, how many broken hearts you saw? Have you had misty eyes for years? Could that mist be tears? Could that mist be tears? Well, now they tell me that you saw Cochise When he made his last stand He said, "The next white man that sees my face Is gonna be a dead white man" Old Apache squaw, how many broken hearts you saw? Hank and Joe and me walked on So bold and brave and free. For days and days, we fought the heat. I got so thirsty and I got so weak, And when I fell 'cause I couldn't go, I heard Hank say to Joe: "He's dyin' (dyin', dyin') For water. Hear him cryin' (cryin', cryin') For water. "Well, lay him down in the dust and sand." He said, "Joe, you know he's a dyin' man. Leave him there and let him die. I can't stand to hear him cry For water. I don't remember how long I lay, But when I awoke, it was the break of day. Buzzards circled miles ahead. I knew Hank and Joe were dead. My eyes were dimmed but I could see A bed of gold nuggets under me. Now I know that it won't be long Till they decorate my bones. 'Cause I'm dyin' (dyin', dyin') For water. Can't help cryin' (cryin', cryin') For water. Well, they laid me down in the dust and sand. He said: "Joe, you know he's a dyin' man. Leave him there and let him die. I can't stand to hear him cry For water." He couldn't stand to hear me cry For water. |

Somebody's army is always on the move. There's gonna be a battle; the lines have been drawn; they got guns an' tanks an' planes. The wells have gone dry and the water is bad and the air is acid rain. There's war after war and rumors of war from the east. There's a rumblin' in the ground and they're talkin' about the beast. Good mothers cry 'cause the rivers run high with the blood of too many sons. Some people say peace is on the way, but the worst is still to come. CHORUS: 'Cause the prophets wrote about it and Jesus spoke about it and John got to take a look. And he told us what he saw and it's easy to see it's goin' by the book. It's goin' by the book. There's armies in the cities and the missiles stand ready for flight. A pale horse rides like the wind across the night. And that rumblin' in the desert like thunder gettin' closer are the trumpets gettin' ready to blow. There's gonna be a shout that'll wake the dead; we better be ready to go. CHORUS |

Subject: Lyr Add: MAN IN BLACK (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 12:56 PM This song was mentioned by Muttley on 16-Feb-2007: MAN IN BLACK Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Man in Black" (1971) Well, you wonder why I always dress in black, Why you never see bright colors on my back, And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone? Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on. I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side o' town. I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime But is there because he's a victim of the times. I wear the black for those who've never read Or listened to the words that Jesus said About the road to happiness through love and charity. Why, you'd think He's talkin' straight to you and me. Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose, In our streak o' lightnin' cars and fancy clothes, But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back, Up front there ought to be a man in black. I wear it for the sick and lonely old, For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold. I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been. Each week we lose a hundred fine young men. And, I wear it for the thousands who have died Believin' that the Lord was on their side. I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died Believin' that we all were on their side. Well, there's things that never will be right, I know, And things need changin' ev'rywhere you go, But till we start to make a move to make a few things right, You'll never see me wear a suit of white. Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow ev'ry day And tell the world that ev'rything's okay, But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back. Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black. |
Subject: Lyr Add: MEAN EYED CAT (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:03 PM This song was mentioned by fumblefingers on 09-Mar-2007: MEAN EYED CAT Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash on "Sings Hank Williams and Other Favorite Tunes" (1960) 1. I give my woman half my money at the gen'ral store. I said: "Now buy a little groceries and don't spend no more." Then she paid ten dollars for a ten-cent hat And got some store-bought cat food for her mean-eyed cat. When I give her ten more dollars for a one-way ticket, She was mad as she could be. Then I bet ten more that if she ever left, She'd come a-crawlin' back to me. 2. When I woke up this mornin' and I turned my head, There wasn't a cotton-pickin' thing on her side of the bed. I found a little old note where her head belonged. It said: "Dear John, honey, baby, I'm long gone." When I heard a whistle blowin' and the big wheels a-turnin', I was scared as I could be. I put on my overalls and I headed for town. I'm gonna bring her back with me. 3. I asked the man down at the station if he had seen her there. I told him all about her pretty eyes and long blonde hair. He spit his tobacco, said: "I'll be dad-blamed. I b'lieve I did see her leavin' on the east-bound train." I bought a round-trip ticket on the east-bound train. I was broke as I could be, But when I come back, I got to buy another ticket, Gonna bring her back with me. 4. Well, I got off the train somewhere in Arkansas, And I worked up the guts to call my mother-in-law. She said: "I'll tell you where she is, if you act right. She's workin' four-to-twelve at Trucker's World tonight." Well, when I walked in, she saw me and she took off her apron And she grabbed her goin'-home hat. She bought a ticket with her tips. Now we're curled up on the sofa, Me and her and that mean-eyed cat. [The recording on "Sings Hank Williams and Other Favorite Tunes" omits verse 4. The recording on "American II: Unchained" omits the second half of verse 1.] |

Ev'ryone in Nashville Was listenin' to Bill. "I don't want to be layin' in bed When they pronounce me dead." He'd stand and breathe in the microphone With his guitar hangin' to his knee bone. All the girls just sat and dreamed When Bill began to sing. "I don't want my hat to be hung When my last song is sung." But he never let fame go to his head "This is Smilin' Bill McCall," he said. "Gonna pick and sing a song or two Y'all listen till I'm through. "And if you're at the house or in your car, Tune in this time tomorr'." To all the boys he was a big hero. They'd glue their ears to the radio, Then talk in a most unusual drawl Imitatin' Bill McCall. "Daddy, can I get me a guitar? 'Cause I want to be a star." The girls would say of Bill McCall: "Why, I bet he's over six feet tall. Handsomest man in Nashville!" They said of Smilin' Bill. He won't be plantin' potato slips When he cashes in his chips. Then one day Bill didn't make the show. Didn't even show up for a week or so. The station's boss said to City Hall: "Find Smilin' Bill McCall." It won't be hard to track him down. He's got the biggest feet in town. Well, there's a creek that runs through Nashville And on the bank they found Smilin' Bill. He's committin' suicide, But they grabbed him 'fore he tried. "Turn me loose, I'm 'onna jump," he screamed, "'Cause I can't stand that theme. "Let this be my final breath, 'Cause I'm scared to half to death." The big brave Smilin' Bill McCall Is only four feet tall. "I'd rather be in the river dead Than to hear 'em laughin' at my bald head." |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHAT DO I CARE (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:22 PM This song was mentioned by Black Hawk on 08-Apr-2007: WHAT DO I CARE Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash as a single (Columbia 4-41251, 1958) When I'm all through, if I haven't been what they think I should be, If the total isn't high enough when they figure me, When I grow old, if there's no gray from worry in my hair, What do I care? What do I care? [§] What do I care, just as long as you were mine a little while? When the road was long and weary, you gave me a few good mile. What do I care if I miss a goal because I make a slip? I'll still be satisfied because I tasted your sweet lips. What do I care if I never have much money? And sometimes my table looks a little bare? Anything that I may miss is made up for each time we kiss. You love me and I love you, so what do I care? [Repeat from §.] |
Subject: Lyr Add: FAIR WEATHER FRIENDS (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:37 PM This song was mentioned by Mike Miller on 04-Apr-2007: FAIR WEATHER FRIENDS Words and music by Joseph Allen & John R. Cash. As recorded by Johnny Cash on "The Adventures of Johnny Cash" (1982) CHORUS: Fair-weather friends, fair-weather sailors Will leave you stranded on life's shore, But one true friend who really loves you Is worth the pain your heart endures. 1. We never know which way the wind will blow Nor when and where the next turmoil will be, But he's a solid rock in trouble's flow And he holds out a saving hand for me. CHORUS 2. He'll be your shelter in the night. He'll be an anchor in the storm. When you can't find your way, he'll be your light. In the chilly wind of doubt, he'll keep you warm. CHORUS TWICE |
Subject: Lyr Add: NEXT IN LINE (Johnny Cash) From: Jim Dixon Date: 08 Dec 19 - 01:55 PM This song was mentioned by James on 20-Oct-2003: NEXT IN LINE Words and music by Johnny Cash As recorded by Johnny Cash as a single (Sun 266, 1957) The next in line will be someone who loves you. The next in line is me, 'cause it's my time. Now how long will it be Till you end my misery? You better be prepared to linger when you get to me. The time has come for you to love me, if you ever are. Come to me now, so I can make you mine. I watched them rush to you so fast. I waited so I'd be the last. It's my time 'cause I'm the next in line. The next in line will want your love forever. The next in line is me and here I am. Give me a day or two And I'll get through to you. You'd 'a' been my baby long ago, if you'd turned down a few. This ol' heart can't take much more waitin' for your love. I'm tired and we're runnin' short o' time. I'll make you love me more Than ev'ryone before. My time to try 'cause I'm the next in line. I stood and watched you take their hearts and break 'em one by one. My time was comin', so I waited while you had your fun. Now I'm through a-waitin' way behind. It's my time 'cause I'm the next in line. |

Subject: RE: Johnny Cash Songs From: Joe MacGillivray Date: 27 Dec 19 - 05:03 AM Big River. I see mentioned above that someone was working on the F#7 to B7 transition. I'm not sure how well known this is, but Johnny also played another chord in this song that doesn't normally appear in tabs online. It's at the end of each verse. When that e string 3-3-3-0 riff at the end of each verse is played, (and when that phrase is played in the solo) he plays an interesting G / E like chord, where he puts his ring finger on the third fret of the E and plays this E/G chord. (E with a G bass, to coincide with the note of the riff). I hope I'm describing it right. I've been a huge fan of Johnny's for years. He has been a tremendous influence on my music. |
