Subject: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: kendall Date: 18 Sep 02 - 10:25 PM I have recently had the great pleasure of reviewing a 4 cd set of Utah Phillips' songbook. These will be among my treasures for the rest of my life. It is a collection of his songs, 60 of them, and they are done by Utah, Rosalie Sorrels, Kate Breslin and Jody Stecher,Kate Wolf, Finest Kind and me. I don't know when they will be released, but, as soon as they are I will probably be among the first to know, and I will post the info here. Utah says he has a phobia about writing, and talking on the phone, although he has written and called me. He once said, "It's better to write one Kendall than to curse the dark." He also does not do computers at all. I also received a sample cd from our own Noreen. This lady has a beautiful voice. I didn't get to hear her when I was in England last fall, it seems that spiced rum does something to your hearing! Anyway, somehow I hope she is able to get to the Getaway next year. Thanks for the preview, Noreen. |
Subject: RE: Review: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: Joan from Wigan Date: 19 Sep 02 - 02:32 AM I thought from the thread title that Utah and Noreen had got together to record a CD! Ah well, dream on... I'll look forward to further info, particularly about Noreen's CD - I'd certainly agree about her beautiful voice. Joan |

Subject: RE: Review: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: GUEST,Skipjack 9K8 Date: 19 Sep 02 - 05:49 PM That woman tickles my ivories every time. The voice of an angel, and a damn fine piany player, too. And a thoroughly bloody nice girl. Sireen, I salute you. |

Subject: RE: Review: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: GUEST,Terilu Date: 22 Sep 02 - 12:23 AM I had the honor of having dinner with Utah P. two nights ago during a meeting he called with activists from the N.Y. Capital region area who wanted to figure out ways to deal with the Bush bizzareness of late. He is very involved in spreading the message of peace and non-violence. The show last night was a huge success, and we had about 400 people at the West Hall Auditorium in RPI, Troy, N.Y. He is a national treasure, and he inferred it might be the last time he would travel that far east because of his heart condition. But he seemed in good shape and health, and gave a hell of a show, impressing young and old alike. May his long white ponytail wave for many more years to come! |
Subject: RE: Review: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: Art Thieme Date: 22 Sep 02 - 12:45 AM This project sounds to be pretty amazing. I do wish I'd been involved. Give my best to Bruce. Tell him I'm doing well and it's great to know he's still into fighting the good fights. Art Thieme |

Subject: RE: Review: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: kendall Date: 22 Sep 02 - 05:55 AM Sorry Noreen, I didn't mean to embarass you. I should have asked your permission to post that review. |
Subject: RE: Review: Utah Phillips and Noreen Keene From: Fortunato Date: 22 Sep 02 - 03:46 PM Thank you, Kendall, for your review of the CD and the heads up. I'll be watching for when and where to get one. Bruce is unique in these times or maybe any times. I remember standing in a long line at the restroom at Foxhollow with Bruce and Riki Schenyer, most entertaining toilet wait I've ever had, story after story. When he stopped by my open mike in Tenley Town later that year ago, he delivered one of my favorite lines between songs: "Never own anything you have to feed or paint". Two years ago I caught his radio show in San Francisco just before Christmas and I damn near drove off the road. He was a veritable time machine. The CD you have reviewed has some of my favorite singers on it...I'll be waiting. best regards, Chance (Oh and see you at the Getaway, this time we've got to do a few tunes). |
