I've decided to start a new St George's day tradition at work as dragons are rare in this part of England. I've been passing round some biscuits (to go with a cup of tea) and have been wishing people a "Happy St George's day!". This seems to have been well received as 'tea and biscuits' is one of the old English traditional treats.

The John o' Gaunt ( good English name that!) in Sutton, Near Biggleswade - tonight from about 8.30ish.
Good singing, good beer, good music with a very English flavour. No - I won't sing any Welsh songs - promise!

In true Hull style i will celebrate in the same way i celebrate St davids Patrick's and Andrew's with a pint of fortification! It's also Shakespeares birthday bless him, so quote a few lines at someone - blow winds and crack your cheeks!

So why are the pubs not full of BS Brits singing traditional songs and quaffing pints of English Ale, wearing amusing tankard shaped foam hats and taking 2 days off work to recover then?

Not a single rose did I see on the tube today, not another dragon, nor a single English flag. Didn't even get a biscuit and a cup of tea.

The Government won't give us a Bank Holiday to celebrate because St George's day falls so close to the May day Bank Holiday, and in most years, Easter. How about giving us a day off in that long dreary holidayless period between August Bank Holiday and Christmas?

Well we're of to dance & kill dragons tonight in sunny 'Southport Fairly Near the Sea'.
The Southport Swords and the Argarmeles Clogs will be at the Windmill, Seabank Rd 8pm. The Guest House, Union St, 8-40pm. The Scarisbrick Hotel, Lord St, 9-20pm. The Falstaff, King St, 10pm. all times are 'Morris Time'.

So if anyone is in the area we might see you?

How do all, I was looking for the lyrics to "The New St. George" by Richard Thompson but no-one seems to have them, not even his own site...unfortunately I don't possess the record either so can't work it out for myself...I'm in the Scottish borders and feel I shoukld have had today off esp. as I didn't get Easter Monday or Good Friday...
There is a "Dragon" church near here (Linton Kirk) and a local dragon legend associated with it, the dragonslayer (iforget who) is supposed to have built a huge wheeled lance and rolled it downhill at the serpent, which seems a bit unsportsmanlike really.

Some clever chap wrote in to the BBC today and pointed out that when a saint's day falls in Easter week, it gets moved. As far as I can see he is right, so I've got to tell you good people that it is the feast of Saint George next monday, 28th April!

Perhaps the trouble with St George is that, unlike St Patrick in Ireland and St David in Wales, he never set foot in England!

I don't recall that the Scots make much of St Andrew, possibly for the same reason.

Craig, you are sort of right - in fact the rule is that if St George's Day falls before Easter Sunday, it gets moved to Easter Monday. So, with Easter Sunday past, the rule does not apply here. On the other hand, as any (Greek or Russian) Orthodox Christian will tell you, "proper" Easter Sunday is the coming one (27th April), and so St George's Day should be the 28th this year, and indeed that is when I will be celebrating my nameday, and as it's Monday, I will of course be at Herga. Come and buy me a drink for my nameday!

Guest,Barny: Here is a link to the lyrics of Thompson's New St George. Whoever decided to use red text on a red background needs to think a little harder, but if you highlight the text you can read it. There are other more legible sites with the lyrics, but this one has the melody as well.
