Subject: Happy St George's Day! From: Surreysinger Date: 23 Apr 07 - 08:56 AM Since I can see that the house in the next street that usually celebrates national days is flying the appropriate flag today (while Guildford Castle has nothing flying at all - yet celebrates other events), it occurs to me to wish everyone a happy St George's Day. Guildford seems to be celebrating with a St George's Day Farmer's Market and "traditional events" - on reading through the list of proposed events I couldn't actually see anything that struck me as being traditional in OUR sense of the word. Hey ho! |
Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: jacqui.c Date: 23 Apr 07 - 09:08 AM And a happy St George's Day from me. I've got the hat with the rose in it ready for when I go out today, although here in Maine very few people are likely to understand the significance. Oh, and happy birthday to Shakespeare too. |
Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: Mrs_Annie Date: 23 Apr 07 - 09:13 AM Well done jacqui. I wanted to copmplain to Google that they haven't recognised the day, but couldn't find out how to contact them. |

Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: GUEST,GT Date: 23 Apr 07 - 09:43 AM -and happy birthday Will.To commemorate the Bard's(possible) birthday,I've today uploaded a couple of settings of his sonnets that I put music to recently. Have a listen if you have a mind to! www.myspace.com/gordontyrrall |
Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: Surreysinger Date: 23 Apr 07 - 11:46 AM Also by the way the Bards death-day! He certainly knew about timing! Just been out to the Farmer's market in Guildford town, and celebrated by buying some Sussex Slipcote cheese, damson fruit drink, and turkey sausages - and the only sign of celebration in the town that I could see? A stall from the St George's Appreciation Society (or whatever it's name was), manned by what looked like a retired, besuited and tied ex-colonel and two young ladies, with lots of St george's flags, and white balloons with red crosses on them ..... not precisely what I'd call traditional myself!! :-( I'd love to listen to those Gordon, but at the moment my machine is refusing to play sounds - even glummer face! |
Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 Apr 07 - 11:59 AM Out to play for the Morris soon. Looks as if it might rain. How very English! |
Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: GUEST Date: 23 Apr 07 - 12:59 PM Born in Turkey, raised in Israel, soldier for the Italians. Took over as patron saint of England in the late 1300s from St. Edmund, then was downgraded by the Pope in 1893 and is no longer patron saint of England. However, he is patron saint of Portugal, Montenegro Georgia, Canada... And he had an appalling record on preservation of endangered species. But I shall be out dancing the Morris to celebrate. |

There is an act on at the Bridge tonight called George - but his surname lets him down - Welch. Now, if it was George English I would be there like a shot. Only kidding:-) George W is a fine man and excelent artist. Still won't make it though - I'll be at work till god knows what time:-( Cheers Dave |

Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: Dave the Gnome Date: 23 Apr 07 - 02:36 PM BTW - Wouldn't it be 1983 he was sacked by the Pope? I'm sure I remember it happening and I wasn't about in 1893! :D |
Subject: RE: Happy St George's Day! From: GUEST,Nicholas Waller Date: 23 Apr 07 - 02:37 PM And Saint George is the patron saint of Beirut (where I for one was born), where the Saint George Hotel (famous in the 50s and 60s for being a meeting place for Cold War spies like Philby) overlooks the Saint George Bay, where it is said "the dragon lived and where it was slain." |
