Subject: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Jun 00 - 02:29 PM I can't believe I hadn't disovered Kate Wolf until this year, but it's true. Now I've ordered her anthology CD and it's become my favorite CD. I am playing the grooves out of it and want to learn every song on it. AND, they're all in my keys!!! Whooo! I've ordered the Kate Wolf songbook, which ought to arrive tomorrow, and can't wait to see which ones are included there. I can especially recommend this one to those of you who liked the two "Heart of a Woman" CDs from Ireland (and if you haven't bought those, run, don't walk, to your local CD outlet and snag 'em both, as well as the Mary Black solo CD. Simply yummy stuff by wonderful female vocalists). Unsolicited commercial endorsement by WyoWoman Search for "Kate Wolf" threads |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Jun 00 - 02:31 PM Ok, well, so much for my HTML madness. And, yes, I know this isn't a new collection and many of you probably have had some of her albums for years. It's just new in my life, and utterly splendid. ww |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: JenEllen Date: 04 Jun 00 - 02:36 PM So glad that you found her, Wyo. My Anthology is getting a bit of play as well, and she's in my key too! ~Elle |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: BlueJay Date: 04 Jun 00 - 03:02 PM WyoWoman- Kate Wolf was one of the greats. In your key, huh? I mentioned in another thread, (Folk Music for Babies), that playing Kate Wolf songs was the ONLY thing that would soothe my fussy premature grandson. And you know what? Her songs seem to be in my key as well. Enjoy! BlueJay |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: bflat Date: 04 Jun 00 - 03:44 PM WyoWoman, I've loved her songs since first I heard them. They are not only beautiful and melodic but they seem so personal. You are going to love the Songbooks. Mine are dogeared. There is a great compilation put together by Nina Gerber, out two years ago approximately called Remembering Kate Wolf...well worth acquiring. She was also a very generous person. Utah Phillips told the story of Kate visiting his home and after having a drafty bathroom floor experience, returning home, she sent him two hundred dollars to have the floor fixed. I'm sure you know about her website. www.katewolf.com. You can download a song each month from the site. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Jun 00 - 08:37 PM Thanks, bflat, I had discovered that site but haven't downloaded a song yet. Is the compilation by Nina Gerber a CD, or another songbook? Bluejay, too bad you aren't in my neck of the woods, and JenEllen as well. We could get together and do something really pretty, I bet. WW |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: bflat Date: 04 Jun 00 - 09:03 PM WyoWoman Remembering Kate Wolf is a CD. I only wish we could get together and work on her songs together. I especially love: Give Yourself To Love, These Times We're Living In;The Trumpet Vine; Cornflower Blue; Across The Great Divide; The Trumpet Vine; Carolina Pines; Safe At Anchor; ...I'm naming them all. And you will too. She was wonderful. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: WyoWoman Date: 04 Jun 00 - 09:42 PM Cornflower Blue is one I"m learning. Also Two-Part Waltz (is that right? something like that), Across the Great Divide, The Apple and the Lilac, and, well... name one. There isn't a bad 'un on either CD... |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Jun 00 - 01:12 AM Say, do you women think you can get together and sing "Emma Rose" for me? I love women who sing in Kate's key. and "Emma Rose" is my favorite Kate song, with "Redtail Hawk/Pacheco" a close second. Kate's singing makes me think of all the things I like about Northern California. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: JenEllen Date: 05 Jun 00 - 01:18 AM Just as mellow as she can be, ain't she? I love 'Ballad of Weaverville', and try to sing it regularly just to make myself smile. That one and 'Telluride'...fabulous. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Night Owl Date: 05 Jun 00 - 01:25 AM I am joining in the chorus of Kate Wolfe fans....exciting to me personally to know that others here are listening to her music (especially Lilac Bush and the Apple Tree.....) |

Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Stewie Date: 05 Jun 00 - 05:20 AM Me too - 'Green Eyes' and 'Slender Thread' are my favourites. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Tiger Date: 05 Jun 00 - 07:06 AM "Cornflower Blue" for me. Eric Bogle did it in his show as part of a special tribute to Kate. The sonbooks appear on eBay from time to time and can be had at a reasonable price. That's where I got mine. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Pixie Date: 05 Jun 00 - 08:07 AM I am a fan of Kate Wolf's but only through hearing others do her songs. I have not had the good fortune to actually hear her sing....so ladies, tell me, what key does she sing in? I recommend the compilation album that Eric Bogle is on....my favorite is the one Lucinda Williams sings (I think the title is "Here in California"), although all of the cuts are good....I'm going to have to check out the website and get more informed! Pixie |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: harpgirl Date: 05 Jun 00 - 08:59 AM ...I'll sing some KW songs for you Joe. I know a bunch. I think my favorite is "The Streets of Calgary." harpy |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: winniemih Date: 05 Jun 00 - 10:06 AM I'm so glad to see by all these comments that Kate Wolf's music is being kept alive by so many. I've made it my special mission for a number of years to introduce her songs at musical gatherings to people who are not yet familiar with her work. In the words of Utah Phillips, Kate was "a healer who, by remembrance, will continue to heal, to care for us". This to me sums up the essence of her music. I remember the reaction of a man at a bluegrass gathering, when I tried to introduce her song "I Never Knew My Father" to the group; the song itself did not go over too well with the chord changes being a little hard to follow. But the man sitting next to me was profoundly impacted by the song. He revealed to me that his father had died before his birth and that he had unsuccessfully tried to write a song about this...he said that Kate had spoken for him better than he had ever been able to. "Songs need new voices to sing them in places they have never been sung in order to stay alive" (Emmylou Harris). So keep on singing Kate's songs, and she will always be with us. Anyone going to the Kate Wolf Festival in Sebastopol, CA. later this month?

Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: GUEST,kat logan Date: 05 Jun 00 - 03:39 PM I really want to go to that festival! I am prayin' hard for the funds to come to take me from Maine to Califoria. I feel Kate with me when I sing her music. Like she is a soul sister. I know it sounds crazy but it's true. |

Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Miken Date: 14 Jan 02 - 09:17 PM I've loved her music for years. When my father died several years ago her "Eyes of a Painter" described him so well I carried that song around in my head for many months. "Two-Way Waltz","Full Time Woman", and "Across the Great Divide" are other favorites of mine. Her voice had unusual depth and strength. Mike |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: DonMeixner Date: 14 Jan 02 - 09:25 PM I'm of two minds on Kate Wolf. I'd say that half of her stuff is self absorbed naval gazery and the other half is near on brilliant. I have the anthology and I do listen to it all when I play it. But I just about have to slkip that Lilac Bush and Appletree thing. Riding out the storm Trumpet Vine Great Divide are favorites of mine. Lilac/Appletree Dolphin definately aren't. But I'm glad Wyo found a new voice to listen to. Don |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Mudlark Date: 15 Jan 02 - 04:22 AM I like a lot of her stuff too, and she sings them beautifully. Give Yourself to Love and Red-tailed Hawk are personal favorites. There is also a video of her doing an AustinCity Limits show, WhoWoman, that I know you would appreciate. She's playing with Nina Gerber and, I think, Bela fleck. Her mellow serenity spreads out from her voice like ripples in a still pond. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Art Thieme Date: 15 Jan 02 - 12:35 PM Wyo., I'm glad you found her. Many wonderful songs--and a mellowness and sicerity that cannot be beat. Don, We agree. Art |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: BlueFolk Date: 16 Jan 02 - 04:28 AM Yes, 'Trumpet Vine' is her best song. Agreed, she did so many, many great songs. 'See Here' and 'Slender' from her best album Poet's Heart, 'Calgary', etc. etc. And don't forget: 'You' from her relatively underrated first album 'Breezes'. She did some great covers too: Paul Siebel's 'Then Came The Children', Gil Turner's 'Carry It On'. She did a great job adding music to Woody Guthrie's 'One By One'. Far far better than the poor, recent, Billy Bragg & Wilco-version. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Stewie Date: 16 Jan 02 - 08:00 AM Other excellent covers were Ian Campbell's 'The Sun Is Burning', Jack Tempchin's 'Peaceful Easy Feeling' and Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin's 'Ballad of Weaverville'. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 16 Jan 02 - 11:18 AM Would this be the John D. Loudermilk who wrote "Windy and Warm" and has the funny harmonica on a stick holder on his guitar? Don |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Genie Date: 16 Jan 02 - 12:41 PM Mudlark, Is that Austin City Limits video available for rental or purchase? Anyone, I can't think of the titel of Kate's song about her grandmother [?]--"in China or a woman's heart, there are places no one knows." What's it called? Genie |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Stewie Date: 16 Jan 02 - 07:00 PM That was its title: 'In China or a Woman's Heart (There Are Places No One Knows'. It was on 'Poet's Heart'. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Stewie Date: 16 Jan 02 - 07:05 PM In my previous posting, I omitted a closing bracket before the closing inverted comma. (There Are Places No One Knows) forms part of the title. --Stewie. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: GUEST,Fingerstyle Date: 16 Jan 02 - 10:29 PM There is a webpage run by Kate's son. www.katewolf.com which has lots of information. If you look under "Kate's Music and then under Songbooks it lists the songs available in both Song Books, lots of other stuff for fans of her music. Anybody here have the chords to Teluride Sawmill? |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: postman Date: 21 Aug 03 - 08:23 PM It's interesting to see so many different people with so many different favorites. Mine are Give Yourself to Love, See Here, The Wind Blows Wild, Sweet Love, and The Two Way Waltz. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: akenaton Date: 21 Aug 03 - 08:49 PM The only song Iv heard by Kate Wolf ,is "who knows where the time goes". Its the only version that comes anywhere near Sandy Dennys ......Praise indeed. |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: GUEST,mamawolf Date: 21 Aug 03 - 09:59 PM "The Lilac and the Apple" is far and away my favorite KW song; I've sung it to my children regularly since they were born. I had the great good fortune to hear the song a lot growing up; Kate was my mother. Also glad to see appreciation of her versions of "The Sun is Burning" and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes"; the latter was played at Kate's family memorial service, and everyone was profoundly moved. Many thanks to all the posters in this thread for your love and support of Kate's music! Hannah Wolf www.katewolf.com |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: DonMeixner Date: 22 Aug 03 - 12:19 AM I recently heard an Irish band from Buffalo NY do "The Sun is Burning" at an Irish festival. I like the song very much, but to do it at an Irish festival seemed odd. Don |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: Margret RoadKnight Date: 22 Aug 03 - 02:08 AM My niece has just chosen "Give Yourself To Love" and "Two Way Waltz" to be sung at her wedding, and I'll be happy to learn them. Met & performed with Kate Wolf at a Canadian festival mid-'80s, and she consequently and generously had me guest on her Great American Music Hall show in San Francisco... of course I remember her songs and voice, but also her sense of fun (Australians always warm to folk with a sense of humour) |
Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: open mike Date: 22 Aug 03 - 02:48 AM Hannnah-so good to know that you have found mudcat. I always look forward to the festival--such a warm and loving group of friends. I like Kate's song about the bulletin board on the country store.. "Everybody's Lookin' for the Same Thing" I put together a cross word puzzle using her songs...and gave it to you at the festival last year...that was fun to create. Do you still have it? The memorial festival is growing every year, and is mostly positive, Cloud Moss does a great job of organizing the event. I loved it, except that some one stolea folding camp stool of mine there this year. If anyone wants to look at the fewstival site, it is: http://www.monitor.net/kate/ and there are 2 song books...i highly recommend them.. good sings as well as stories and pictures too. |
Subject: Question for Hannah Wolf (or anyone who might know From: postman Date: 22 Aug 03 - 05:54 AM I've probably heard over a hundred of Kate Wolf's songs at one time or another and except for 'The Wind Blows Wild' the lyrics are mostly very straight forward and clear in their meaning. The lyrics of 'The Wind Blows Wild' are filled with images that I don't understand. Do you have any insights about their meaning? |

Subject: RE: Kate Wolf Anthology - WOW! From: GUEST Date: 12 Mar 18 - 07:21 PM For postman: Apparently “The Wind Blows Wild” was Kate Wolf’s last song, composed and partially recorded in a hospital room near the end of her young life. Its lyrics suggest that she traveled through this world and into the Light like a wandering angel, safely home at last |
