Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: Matthew Edwards Date: 08 Sep 14 - 05:53 PM Peter would have been 70 today; death is definitely not the end while he is still remembered so freshly. |
Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: The Sandman Date: 10 May 13 - 02:29 AM another alternative is to contact howard jones, who is a member here and pm him, or brian peters both of whom are members on concertina net |

Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: The Sandman Date: 09 May 13 - 06:12 AM if you are playing an english you will have to work out his notes, and change bellows in the same place an anglo would, to copy the rhythym sound., if you want an exact representation |
Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: The Sandman Date: 09 May 13 - 06:03 AM the other alternative is to slow the whole thing down and go through it note by note, also have alookat the anglo finger board. |
Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: The Sandman Date: 09 May 13 - 06:01 AM on a brief listen he is playing melody, as regards chords or dyads he is possibly playing two notes together, button immediately below, an over simplification, sounds like hes straight up and down the rows. pm m the g m he knew peter and plays anglo, in fact he has one of peters anglos. at a guessand after avery quick listen he is playing melody using thirds fourths and fifths, in two note dyads including the melody, and occasional full three note chords, as if he was playing harmonica with notes either side of the melody |
Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: Phil Edwards Date: 09 May 13 - 05:31 AM Joe - fair enough. Novice box-squeezer still seeks enlightenment on the whole chording thing. I mean, according to the 'chords' sites the first two lines should go like this (if you're playing it in F): F When you're sad and when you're lonely and you haven't got a friend C F Just remember that death is not the end As I said in the OP, I've stuck in a few passing chords... F Gmin F C F Gmin F When you're sad and when you're lonely and you haven't got a friend C F C F Just remember that death is not the end but it still doesn't sound anything like Bellamy's version. What's he actually doing? |
Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: The Sandman Date: 09 May 13 - 05:28 AM Iwould guess its in c or g or related minors, peter had a drone button on his concertina, and generally played up and down the rows, when i get more time i will try and work it out for you. dave webber has peters old concertina |
Subject: RE: Chords: Death Is Not the End (Dylan / Bellamy) From: Joe Offer Date: 08 May 13 - 08:20 PM I combined the two threads on this song to keep all our information together. I think what's interesting about this song is that Dylan put it in the form of an American gospel song, and I think he did a very good job of it - within those confines. It's fun and easy to sing, and it's very easy to harmonize with a song like this. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Death is not the end (Dylan / Bellamy) From: Phil Edwards Date: 08 May 13 - 06:04 PM Thanks for that, Dick. Yes, Joy of Living is a lovely song. For now, though, I'm trying to work out the chords Bellamy played in his accompaniment to Death Is Not The End. Any thoughts? |
Subject: RE: Death is not the end (Dylan / Bellamy) From: The Sandman Date: 08 May 13 - 04:05 PM DEATH IS NOT THE END (Bob Dylan) When you're sad and when you're lonely And you haven't got a friend Just remember that death is not the end And all that you held sacred Falls down and does not mend Just remember that death is not the end Not the end, not the end Just remember that death is not the end When you're standing on the crossroads That you cannot comprehend Just remember that death is not the end And all your dreams have vanished And you don't know what's up the bend Just remember that death is not the end Not the end, not the end Just remember that death is not the end When the storm clouds gather round you And heavy rains descend Just remember that death is not the end And there's no-one there to comfort you With a helping hand to lend Just remember that death is not the end Not the end, not the end Just remember that death is not the end For the tree of life is growing Where the spirit never dies And the bright light of salvation Up in dark and empty skies When the cities are on fire With the burning flesh of men Just remember that death is not the end When you search in vain to find Some law-abiding citizen Just remember that death is not the end Not the end, not the end Just remember that death is not the end Not the end, not the end Just remember that death is not the end Excuse me for the thread creep, but this in my opinion is one of Dylans more forgettable songs, I am sorry, Phil, but I find the song uninspiring, that is no reflection on Peter, who almost makes something out of this pile of drivel. life is short, enjoy it, afar better song in my opinion is the joy of living Farewell you northern hills, you mountains all goodbye Moorland and stony ridges, crags and peaks goodbye Glyder Fach farewell, Cul Beag, Scafell, cloud-bearing Suilven Sun warmed rock and the cold of Bleaklow's frozen sea The snow and the wind and the rain of hills and Mountains Days in the sun and the tempered wind and the air like Wine And you drink and you drink till you're drunk On the joy of living Farewell to you my love, my time is almost done Lie in my arms once more until the darkness comes You filled all my days, held the night at bay, dearest Companion Years pass by and they're gone with the speed of birds In flight Our life like the verse of a song heard in the Mountains Give me your hand then love and join your voice with Mine We'll sing of the hurt and pain And the joy of living Farewell to you my chicks, soon you must fly alone Flesh of my flesh, my future life, bone of my bone May your wings be strong, may your days be long, safe Be your journey Each of you bears inside of you the gift of love May it bring you light and warmth and the pleasure of Giving Eagerly savour each new day and the taste of it's mouth Never lose sight of the thrill And the joy of living Take me to some high place of heather, rock and ling Scatter my dust and ashes, feed me to the wind So that I will be part of all you see, the air you are breathing I'll be part of the curlew's cry and the soaring hawk The blue milkwort and the sundew hung with diamonds I'll be riding the gentle wind that blows through your hair Reminding you how we shared In the joy of living Lyrics from eLyrics.net |

Subject: Death is not the end (Dylan / Bellamy) From: Phil Edwards Date: 08 May 13 - 03:52 PM Just been listening to Peter Bellamy's wonderful version of "Death is not the end" and trying to work out what he's playing. According to dylanchords.info, the entire song's on three chords; the accompaniment of the verses consists of alternate lines on F and C, while the refrains have a few Bbs chucked in. (The chords are actually A, D and E, but it works better for me transposed ot F.) After playing around with it for a while I've worked out an accompaniment with a bit more variation, breaking up what would otherwise be one long F with passing chords (Bb and G minor). But what Bellamy was playing was much livelier. I can't work out if it's just those three or four chords (in different orders), a wider range of chords or a melody line cunningly disguised as a chordal accompaniment (I/V chords?). Could someone have a listen and see what they think? Anglo players' opinions would be particularly welcome, for obvious reasons. |
