Hoping someone can offer up some advice. My lovely father in law has been suffering with acute eczema over the last 7 or so months. He has cut out all his normal treats. Last few months the normally chipper, sharp gentleman has been feeling very low. No sugar, no alcohol, etc. which is probably contributing to the low mood.

There have been no changes in laundry soap, but mum in law now double rinses all clothes, bed and bath linens to be safe. Docs not able to give much relief for his eczema, still trying different things. One thing will start to give relief then stop working.

He also is suddenly very sensitive to cold. Can't keep his body temperature up to normal.

Last week the cold thing got to him so bad that he fell down upon rising from chair and could not get himself up off the floor. Mum in law called paramedics who got him up, checked him over and left. He has prosthetic leg since WWII and recently (last few days) experiencing pain in both hips.

He has promised me that he will go to doc this week if he does not feel better soon.

Just wondering if anyone has experienced these symptoms or knows someone who has. Or if can suggest something to at least sort the eczema as he is in misery with the itching and burning skin.

Just breaks my heart to know this lovely chipper gentleman is suffering and feeling so low.

Has he tried taking a bit of Lysine? Sometimes it helps - though like all different things, try it cautiously at first.

Poor bloke. Is he bathing with... what's it called... Aqueous? That can ease things.

The brother-in-law has this, and finds that if he wears only *pure* cotton it's better for him.

My SiL was told by her doc to use Aveeno. They make a number of products so it make take some research on the internut to figure out which might help.

Coal Tar soap always helps me. No scented soaps whatsoever.
Failing that something hypoallergenic, I think Simple Soap fits that description.

When my twins were young and just finishing up chicken pox (this is before the vaccine), the one with pale, thin skin (I think of it as Irish skin, inherited from his father) developed a rash that wouldn't quit. The doctors (several of them) fixated on scabies as a cause, and we went through all sorts of decontamination, then washed the whole famiy with some fairly toxic stuff. No effect, and the lesions kept changing from rash-like to whole-body itch and redness. I finally took him to a dermatologist who once more diagnosed scabies, but did mention that it could be a surface bacterial infection. A thorough bath in iodine (Povodine, actually) soap cured it in a couple days. If it's a fungal infection (candidiasis), the Povodine will kill it. Antibiotic ointments will not. The Povodine looks pretty bad (dark brown) but usually doesn't hurt like alcohol solution of iodine does, and washes out easily from most fabrics. It can't hurt, and if it works it's a diagnosis.

Docs have given him different bath additives and creams and lotions. Also gave him a steroid injection which helped for a bit.

I am wondering if maybe there are some natural, herbal options that people have found successful.

I know how miserable it is. I had eczema from birth to 9 years old. Hated being inside my skin. Mine was down to being sensitive to prescribed bath oil and lotion.

Betty... I am now remembering that both TSO and I both got a staph infection (rash, blisters) from hotel linens. Dad's is not typical staph, but may be what you describe. I am wondering if this started after their last little break.

If mum in law does a hot hot dettol wash of all linens and his cotton shirts, pants and the socks for his stump and he tries the Povodine on affected areas.

I have heard that borage cream works well (from a woman who was a naturopath/therapist) - borage oil is manufactured as starflower oil and comes in capsules.

I've used neat vitamin E oil direct on patches of psoriasis for my partner, and it always clears up pink and smooth(I understand that's not the same thing though).

Or you could bathe him in oat milk and smother him in a poltice of cold porridge..

For bacterial infection in skin, manuka honey is supposed to be good. Aloe vera gel is very soothing too. I make it into a kind of 'mayonnaise' slather for after-sun, by adding lavender oil (anti-bacterial/promotes healing) and wheatgerm oil (vit e).

Only two things I would ask about, even though this seems to be eczema, have they checked his kidney function and also to see if he is aenemic? The not being able to warm up can be a symptom of the latter and the skin problems can be related to kidney stuff, though usually I am told that would also include nausea, etc.

I ordered a sample of some shampoo a mom made up for her baby who was born with eczema. She sells it on Etsy, but I cannot recommend it as it as not packaged well and most of it had leaked out, so I couldn't really try it. She gave me a refund, but I was not impressed with the service. She does have positive feedback. If you are interested, please PM me.

Also, I have that "Irish" skin and have always had to wear 100% cotton and it has to be fairly good cotton. I've noticed, these days, the cheap stuff can get just as scratchy as some of the synthetics. One thing I always do is wash any new clothing with some vinegar in the water as it removes the sizing which can really irritate.

Good luck,

kat

Not all cases of eczema are allergic in origin but a lot are. In that case it makes sense to eliminate the allergen rather than add medication.

The two basic kinds of allergic eczema are the ones caused by food allergy and the ones caused by contact with environmental allergens. The difference is the site. Food allergy eczema is usually on the INNER surface of the knees, groin or elbows (areas that won't come in contact with stuff like floor polish, shampoo or whatever). Whereas eczema on the CONVEX surfaces of the body is usually because you're rubbing against an irritant.

Commonest eczema-causing food allergens: dairy products, eggs, wheat, nightshade-family plants (tomato, potato, tobacco etc)

Commonest environmental allergens: perfumes used in scented products, with household cleaners, detergents, deodorants and fabric conditioners being the worst. ESPECIALLY fabric conditioners - they're evil shit and nobody should use them (there are no scent-free ones).

With regard to the coldness, Tam..has he been on steroids in the recent past? I noticed you mentioned an injection, but has he taken steroid tablets in the not too distant past, say a year or more?

I ask because I was on them when I was 19. About a year later my circulation went nuts. I couldn't get warm, chilblains on hands and feet, never had them before...I went to bed fully clothed, under eiderdowns and blankets galore, but just shivered all night long. Utter misery.

The doctor sorted it out. "Ah, steroids.." he said...and prescribed some 'heat me up' pills. They had me sweating in no time at all...and shortly after that my temperature control went back to normal, never to go nuts again.

Eczema's often a nervous problem. Is he worried about anything? I get it only very mildly, and only if I'm worried. It first started with the loss of my first baby, totally out of the blue.

Just a thought, but...is he worried about dying? That can be a big one to keep inside your head. A very sensitive subject to broach, I know, but a possibility nonetheless.

Vi, 96, gets terribly worried if the slightest thing starts to go wrong with her because she's so afraid of dying.

I do hope he gets better soon.

I've been struggling with a form of contact dermatitis for the past year or so. I've also tried cutting out a lot of foods, careful with soaps, shampoos, things I touch.

It's worse right now, after Thanksgiving. I suspect sugar might be part of it.

I did the research on food supplements, and the recommendation from the Dr. Weil site is to take gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) that comes from evening primrose oil, black current oil, or borage. I found evening primrose capsules and I've gradually been increasing the amount (I'm still not up to the upper recommendation, but I thought I'd build and see if it has an effect, expecting to see results gradually.) I think it is beginning to make a difference, but there are break-out episodes still, and I think for me it is diet or contact (with an allergen) related.

The way you describe his various symptoms, I would go in and ask for a panel of common sense blood work, rule out diabetes, thyroid, infection, etc. While we can offer suggestions, a physician should rule out the worst possible players before you get too far into the soaps, lotions, and herbal supplements.

OK, usual tactful self.

DOCTOR.

You don't wait for your car to cure itself, you take it to a mechanic. Don't wait for your body to cure itself, take it to a doctor.

STRESS

I have had various bits of eczema over the years. Usually stress.

STEROIDS

The right ones. Fair bit of poke needed, and salycilic acid in the ointment helps with penetration. Try Diprosalic.

Some of you may remember that a few years ago (maybe a year after Jacqui died) my hands were falling to pieces, splits appearing in figertips, not useful for guitarist (ow) and I was trying to play with my fingertips wrapped in band-aids. Other areas were affected but it was the fingertips that bothered me most. Since the DOCTOR tried Diprosalic there has been steady improvement, still some occasional irritation but the fragility and splitting of the skin is pretty well gone.

I have eczema of several different kinds in several different places, some responsive to treatment and some not.

Currently I'm getting ultraviolet-B treatment for the patches on the soles of my feet, which have got to the point where the only chemical treatments they respond to are clobetasol (the strongest topical steroid there is) or tacrolimus (an immunosuppressant which increases your risk of getting several kinds of cancer, but I have to live with that risk if it means I can still walk). Diprosalic is far weaker than any of that, and there are many kinds of steroid much weaker still.

Usually you start with the weaker ones and work up to tougher stuff when they don't work, but for somebody 92 years old, it seems reasonable to go for fast results.

Coconut oil is pretty good as an external emollient. If you take it internally (I can't think why you'd want to) remember that it's highly saturated, more so than beef suet.

Increasing the omega-3/omega-6 ratio in the diet may help - more fish oil, less sunflower or corn oil. GLA in borage is an omega-6 oil and may make the problem much worse. You DON'T want to just chuck it down your throat without checking to see if it's doing any good or otherwise.

I had finger eczema very much like what Richard describes starting when I was in my 20s - it was caused first by sensitivity to sheep fat, then by xerox or laser printer toner. I still have to avoid handling photocopies or printed sheets while they're still warm, but as long as I do that I don't have a problem.

Where exactly is this man's eczema? This is one of the few conditions where the distribution of the problem on the skin tells you something about the cause.

The acupuncturist I used to go had me use pure, organic coconut oil spread from THESE FOLKS. It was one of the best tonics I'd ever tasted, spread just a tiny bit on a hot piece of toast and it was scrumptious.   I think I'll order some. It's been ages and was really good.

Well he doesn't like coconut and as I understand homeopathy, if you dislike the taste and smell of a plant then it is not good for you and you should not use it.

I wouldn't say he is under any more stress recently, unless he is worried about his 82 yr old wife who is getting markedly forgetful. Both are extremely independent people and both have remarked that they are not accustomed to going to the doctor unless as a last resort.

FiL is much more sedentary lately. They do go for a walk every day weather permitting (not too hot, cold or wet). The used to go on long countryside treks but they don't like to drive now, He used to golf once a week until about 2 summers ago when he got something like heat stroke 2 or 3 times, even though it was not that warm generally. Just staying too long in sun seems to make him ill.

Another thing... he used to help with the housekeeping but lately they have a girl come in for an hour once weekly. So that exercise has suddenly been removed from the mix.

I wish we lived nearby. I would install a Wii, visit daily and encourage them both to play the sports and use Wii fit board.

Sort of idly thinking - both the increased sensitivity to cold and skin disorders could be related to either circulatory problems (that looks a bit like the curious heat stroke too) or diabetes.

Definitely DOCTOR!

Anything strongly aromatic can be an allergen. Sandalwood not so often, but tea tree oil is one of the worst (more for causing asthma than eczema, and it can be lethal).

I'd agree that diabetes ought to be ruled out, but again WHERE IS THE ECZEMA? The exact location can say a lot about what the cause is.

It started on his upper legs inside and outside just above the knee. But I understand that it is on his back as the MiL has to put creams on it.

When we visited them in October his forearm was healing after a biopsy was taken, so I guess the docs are doing what they can. The tissue samples were separated and sent to 2 different labs. Results were to take up to 16 weeks on one of the tests.

I am thinking circulatory too.

We will be collecting them from Stratford u Avon on Christmas Eve and driving them to Hambledon. I will try to wheedle some more info and make some suggestions.

If this started when he stopped walking, it does sound as if a little more exercise would help.

Have you any idea why he no longer likes walking - has anyone teased it out gently with him? Does it just tire him out, or is it that he's more affected by the weather, or is it the eczema itself causing pain when he's walking?

Inner surfaces of the limbs like that suggests either systemic illness or food allergy rather than a response by the skin to some external factor. It can't hurt to try an elimination diet (based around lamb, rice and vegetables, eliminating wheat, dairy, eggs and nightshades). Look for Jonathan Brostoff and Linda Gamlin's book about how to do it and interpret the results. There is no risk of malnutrition with this (might well be better than the diet he has now) and if it works you should know in a month.

I used to use coal tar soap. It's now nearly impossible to get hold of. Wright's (formerly the leading brand) no longer contains any real coal tar - the smell is entirely simulated with chemicals which are likely to be allergenic in their own right. In any case, external treatments like that are not as effective as dealing with the real cause, if it's a dietary factor or a side-effect of some other illness.

Coal tar soap as is illegal in the EU in non prescription products. Tea tree oil is the approved replacement.

Stupid. I had a tea tree shampoo once and it landed in the been after 3 uses. The itching on head and back was insane.

Tea tree oil may have female hormone properties after 3 boys developed breasts after using oils and hair gels with tea tree oil.

"Researchers in the US believe that the oils may have hormone-like properties that lead to gynaecomastia - the growth of breasts. When the boys stopped using the oils, the breasts disappeared. Writing in New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers say that the repeated use of such oils may disrupt hormonal function."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/feb/18/medicineandhealth.health

Creams and cosmetics with tea tree may increase spread of hospital superbug MRSA and e Coli. That stuff is scary.

Thanks all. I am sending some of the above suggestions to the Parents in law, especially that bleach thing.

While I don't have any suggestions particular to eczema, it might be worth noting that while steroids can be an appropriate part of treatment for many things, a recent brief course of a very mild Rx got me a warning that all steroids depress immune response and that I should refuse any and all vaccinations and avoid exposure to communicable ailments for at least three months after completing the treatment. My reading of the "medfacts" descriptions of a number of such drugs supports the warning.

While I certainly would not suggest not taking steroids prescribed by competent medical practitioners, the sensitivity of elderly persons to infections, and particularly to influenza and pneumonia, suggests that extra caution should be taken to avoid exposure while they are being used.

That may be the case for oral steroids. Those are just about never used for eczema, and even the strongest creams, ointments or intracutaneous injections carry no caution about vaccination.

Hmmm.

I have asthma. The first time I saw a respirologist, he asked whether I also have hay fever and eczema. "Yes," I replied, wondering why he cared. "They generally go together," he said, explaining that all three ailments are caused by hyper-reactivity in the immune system.

Low-dose steroid ointment is the only treatment that has ever done my eczema a blind bit of good.

I'd definitely get him to the doctor. There could be all sorts of reasons for his symptoms.
However, if it is diagnosed as eczma, there might be something you could try. When the girls were little, they both suffered very badly from eczma and I was extremely wary of steroid creams. Eventually, after being prescribed various ineffective aqueous-type creams, a doctor prescribed a cream called "Unguentum Merck". Nothing nasty in it at all, but not regularly prescribed because it was relatively expensive.I used this every day and used Oilatum in their bath instead of soap or baby bath products. Within a month of using it, both were free from eczma and have not suffered since. Many friends have also used it when nothing else seemed to work - always with good results.I don't know if it is still available, but it might be worth looking for.

There are lots of modern equivalents of "Unguentum Merck" - emollients are the first thing most doctors will suggest. The ingredients of UM are "Cetostearyl alcohol, glyceryl monostearate, saturated neutral oil, liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin and colloidal anhydrous silica" - glyceryl monostearate is just purified coconut oil

Might work, but the back and the backs of the knees are not likely sites for dryness inducing irritation.

It isn't fair on a 92-year-old to try an endless string of things that might work after a month (but probably won't). Each of those months is a sizable chunk of the life he's got left. If it's bad enough that he's complaining about it (most eczema sufferers just put up with it) he needs it dealt with FAST.

Many years ago I had such bad eczema - 3 types, I didn't know there were 3 types - that I thought I would never work again. I couldn't drive, could barely sleep, walked with a stick, and was in constant pain. I had to have a bed frame, such as burns patients have, to keep sheets off my legs, and wearing trousers was too painful so I was wearing shorts in the winter. I was given various creams, but none of them make the eczema go away. People who saw my legs and face assumed I had been in a fire.

Doctors sent me for tests, found nothing, gave up, and said I'd had to live with it.

I bought a book on food allergies. It said to find out what you are allergic to, drink only water and eat only potatoes for a week. It listed the common culprits, which included dairy and onions, and said to reintroduce foods one by one. When you get a reaction, you know you have found the culprit. I found my culprits (onions, dairy, leeks, peanuts) and stopped eating them. Within a fortnight I put the walking stick away. It took 6 months for all my scars to heal but all this was 15 years ago and my eczema has never returned because I have been strict with my diet.

Hope this helps. It's worth a try.

I had the patch allergy tests. I hope it works. For me, it showed I wasn't allergic to anything on the patches. If the same happens, please condsider diet. I did and cured myself when the doctors gave up.

Virginia: I haven't read all the suggestions so I may be repeating what someone else has already suggested, but I go to a Dermotologist every six months for a skin check-up. Over fifty years of exposure to the Arizona sun has taken it's toll. Anyway, I have that problem and doctor prescribed Fluocinonide Cream USP, 0.05% and it has really been effective. It is manufactured by Taro Pharmaceuticals Inc., Brampton, Ontario, Canada. In the US it is distributed by Taro Phamaceuticals U.S.A., Inc., Hawthorne, NY 10532.
