Subject: Chieftains' new album disappointing
From: GUEST,Stuart Reed
Date: 24 Apr 12 - 12:21 PM

The new album Voice of Ages dropped throught the letterbox this morning. Much anticipation followed by disappointment. I'll forgive The Chieftains almost anything but the cheesy tracklist is a severe test of loyalty. I hope the line-up of media-friendly guests results in healthy sales because if any band deserves a decent payday it's this one - but most of the whiny nu-folk and country performers on this album don't deserve to be in such exalted company - The Carolina Chocolate Drops excepted.

Can you be more specific about the "the whiny nu-folk and country performers" that you don't like?

I don't know many of them well enough to comment on the whiney newness but I have Paulo Nutini and Imelda May albums which are neither whiney or even folky!

Hope this helps

As Moloney joked a few years ago : 'Why did the skeleton cross the road? To play with the Chieftains.'

OK, I've been listening to the album all day and am feeling a lot less curmudgeonly. It's a pleasant listen and all done with the best of intentions. At least Paddy Moloney didn't invite the Mumfords...

Surprisingly, the whole album is available free on their website.

Punch Brothers may be a poor name to describe folks who actually spacy, but they are really fine young musicians. You can't accuse them of being the "same old same old".

I saw the Voice of Ages tour show here in Northern California in February. It was the first time I've seen the Chieftains, and I was thrilled. Just when you thought the show couldn't get any better, it got better. The dancing, instrumentals, and singing were all superb. I'm listening to the album now, and I really like it. It brings back wonderful memories of a wonderful concert - it's not exactly what I heard in the concert, but it's enough to bring it back to me.

Everyone has their opinions. The Chieftains have always been a favorite of mine, the new album may introduce listeners to performers that are new to them.
What is disappointing to one may be entertaining to another. The last word in the thread title can't be removed, but I wish it wasn't there.

I never got over the disappointment of Celtic Wedding - or was it the Chieftains in China? Last time I saw the Chieftains on TV they were in the studio with a bunch of Tuvan musicians and Xoomi singers having a lot of fun with an ailing Frank Zappa. I wonder if that's on YouTube?

It is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcjbc22MKQI

Paddy Moloney didn't invite The Mumfords, he will in time, he invites everyone else, he seems to think that the fans of the singers he gets to play with The Chieftains will become Chieftains fans.

I saw Paddy Moloney on morning tv; we need performers getting on tv occasionally to make people aware of folk music. I've got the CD and am enjoying it. The CD uses young performers and that's great even if there is some variation in standard. If it brings in some young performers that is good. In my local area I go to live literature events as well as folk music. The live literature scene is thriving and is bringing in new people and some of them are young. The folk club I go to has only one performer under 60 (and it's not me). So let our young performers have a go.

I saw the Chieftains live at a Sports Hall in Cambridge in the 70s - a fantastic band who got people dancing in the aisles.I haven't heard the new CD but saw Paddy talking about it on breakfast TV and playing along to 10CC on the penny whistle! He seems to have a progressive and open outlook - good luck to him.

I heard a little of it and I liked it. The "Drops" added a lot and didn't seem to detract from the Chieftains at all.

They are both fine groups and they do well working with each other imho.

Another Moloney effort to keep the hoary aul' Chieftains relevant by mixing it up with the up-and-comers. Sorry Paddy, I liked you better when you were playing actual Irish music.

I loved The Chieftains years and years ago when they just played the music. Their recent stuff has involved them playing as a backing band to guest stars so I haven't bought anything by them for ages. They seem to want to mix with the stars.

Yeah, I ended up watching simpering smarmy arse licker Holland's TV show..

The Chieftains & Choccy Drops played together far too fast.

Didn't do either any favours.

Sounded too awkward and the musicians looked too discomforted.

I just felt sorry for the singer working so hard to phrase her vocal stylings to a ridiculously hectic beat.

It was a fusion too far that failed.

Who was actully dictating the bpm ???

I haven't bought anything of theirs in years and years. I didn't like it when they brought in others and I still don't by the sounds of it. I saw them live in the mid-80s when it was just them and that is what I love.

The same thing happened with a Native American flute player who has been very successful, Carlos Nakai. He started adding in others and I haven't bought a new CD in years.

It seems I prefer the first that I learn of a group/performer and figure why mess with a good thing.

Go listen to the link above--you can listen to the whole album--it costs nothing, and there is a fair chance that you'll like it.
