DigiTrad:
AS I ROVED OUT (2)
BAD NEW IS ALL THE WIND CAN CARRY
CRAZY MAN MICHAEL
DIMMING OF THE DAY
DOWN WHERE THE DRUNKARDS ROLL
DRAGGING THE RIVER
FAREWELL FAREWELL
GENESIS HALL
GREAT VALERIO
KILLING JAR
LOCH LOMOND 2
MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE, AND JOHN
NOW BE THANKFUL
POOR WILL AND THE JOLLY HANGMAN
RAINBOW OVER THE HILL

THE OLD CHANGING WAY
TIME TO RING SOME CHANGES
TUIRSE MO CHROI
WALL OF DEATH
WHEN I'M PRIME MINISTER

Is this the song by the late/great Sandy Denny recorded with Fairport Convention?

Mick

Dia dhuit a Mick,

Yes this is the Fairport song, I've had it recommended to me to sing in our group, and have had it sung to me once late on a New Years Eve, so it didn't really stick in my head. And no-one here seems to have a copy of it. Looks like I'll have to start digging in stores for my own hardcopy.

Sla/n

Benjamin

My stepson is married to a Thai lady and whilst they were with us today she played a Thai traditional song which had an identical tune?

Chicken and egg or what?

I hope you get a better response to your question than I got when I asked a similar Chicken and Egg question about the melody of WC Handy's
Careless Love and the tune used commonly for the Trad song Bunch of Thyme .

This link gives the credits from the LP

It is credited to Swarbrick and Thompson

Richard Thompson wrote the words and Dave Swarbrick did the tune.

I believe that Richard Thompson wrote it when only 17 years old , or so Anne ("Anna") Marcordes ( German fiddler , singer , and CD reviewer) told me .

A tune is a small group of notes which someone has decided they liked. Inevitably more or less the same group of notes occurs to different people in different times and places, completely ndependently.

Can we get a link to that Thai tune?
Or, at least, a song title!

I interviewed Dave Swarbrick on a radio programme and he said that RT wrote the words to Crazy Man Michael and set them to a traditional tune. Swarb told him that this was a cop out and RT said, "OK, clever clogs, you make up a tune for it!" So he did.

I'm working on getting a link.

Meanwhile - Vic - what was the traditional tune RT had in mind?

Incidentally our thoughts were that Swarbrick could have picked up the tune on one of his visits to Oz.

I'm afraid that did not come up in the interview

CMM appeared in Leige & Leif in 1969 and was not brand new then.... when did Swarb first go to Australia? Not in the 1960s, I would have thought.

I believe the tune Richard Thompson thought of using was Bonnie House of Airlie (not sure of the spelling).

I'm starting to think that the Thai tune may well not be all it claims to be!

Still - it raised a few interesting points and conjectures.

Sometimes it's good to mudflap.

Years ago, a group of friends invited me and a Chinese lady who was visiting the U.S. to a dinner party.
After dining, the host wanted to have a little musical interlude, so we broke out the guitars and began to play and sing.
I did a few Irish songs, and the host sang some American folk songs.
We asked the Chinese lady whose English was rudimentary if she'd favor us with a Chinese song.
We were very surprised when the melody of her song was the same as the "Lowlands of Holland".
So, did English sailors bring the melody back from China, or did the Chinese get it from the singing of English sailors?
