Richard Thompson - Solitary Life
This program is on BBC4 on Friday 7th Feb at 21.00 and repeated at 01.35 on Saturday morning. It's described as: A personal portrait of the critically acclaimed British folk rock singer, providing an insight into his fascinating life with exclusive footage and contributions from Billy Connolly among others.
Sounds worth recording.
Cheers
Ray

Dang -- wish I could see that in the US!

I would ask for someone to record it and send me the tape, but the *%@# formats are incompatible!

I don't suppose BBC puts streaming video on their website?

Cheers,
Michael

You need to purchase a digibox, Hille, in order to get the new digital channels. There's been some good folky stuff programmed on BBC4 so far, so it looks like it could well be worth buying a digibox if they carry on the way they've begun.

Looking forward to seeing this RT prog. Thanks, Ray!

WHY does the BBC put ALL folk and folk related programmes on BBC4, which the majority of people don't have. It's as if they are forced to broadcast it but are trying to hide it.

Sounds like BBC does much the same thing as the digital cable options here in PA; basic cable gets you the major networks and mindless crap; for things like Sessions at W. 54th st (just as an example off the top of my head) you have to splurge for the digital cable.

It's alarming to me, btw, that there are really no good nationwide folk or acoustic television shows here that I'm aware of. Turner South, available in a very limited area of the south, has some good stuff like live from the bluebird cafe.. but now that the nashville network has become more gentrified as the national network, there's even less hope. Austin ity limits sometimes has great performers, but last one I flipped on was pat metheny group- excellent musicians, but not what I hope to hear there. Anyone remember some of the old TNN shows with real acoustic music, like bobby bare and friends, or what was the one David Holt used to host?

Is this the Richard Thompson (with wife Linda) who made the 'Shoot out the Lights' album? Great album, in my opinion.

GUEST - 'Tis the same Richard Thompson.
Info and loads of other stuff can be found at his website - BEESWEB - Richard Thompson's OFFICIAL website.
Linda Thompson is also still performing solo. Mrs.Duck got her latest LP, Fashionably Late, for Christmas.

robomatic - The website has a section called Song-O-Matic which contains Lyrics for just about all of his songs. F0r instance
Shoot out the Lights - Lyrics. On the pge there is a link to AMAZON where the album can be bought online.
Quack!

It's being repeated tonight (Sat 8th) at 10.40 if (like me ) you missed it. And next Fri 14th at 9.00 there's a Norah Jones special. Hille, find out about 'Freeview' for a limited range of digital channels inc BBC4.

I have this on video tape (Brit format) how would I go about (simply) transferring it to another format to either send online or record to disc? Have they sorted out DVD specs yet?

okthen -- you may want to PM nickp. He says he can convert from PAL to NTSC; maybe he can answer your question about copying to DVD.

Cheers,
Michael

Hmm, no luck I'm afraid - vhs conversion I can deal with assuming no encoding but I'm still in the age of tape! I'm still waiting to hear whether my source was successful in the original recording.

Just a "heads up" that "a solitary life" with R.T. is repeated sunday 2nd March on BBC 4 at 11.10 p.m. followed by the second Celtic Connexions prog.
I'm still sorting out the complexities of my PCTV PRO T.V. card, and different recording formats but am confident I can put this on disc even if it's only in VCD form, when I get time!

MichaelR PM me with a current address and I'll try and send it to you,do you have windows media player?

cheers
bill

Another "heads up" to let people know that this excellent documentary is on 'normal' (terrestial) UK television tonight - BBC2 11.35

Well worth watching (and recording) in my opinion

Having watched this last night some interesting facts emerge. Not least the confimation of my long-standing suspicion that Harry Shearer is a bit of a twat.
