Oh, for @mg, heifers is the "calves" reference you're looking for; heifers are young cows who have not yet mated.

For a start, it should be "a r?n" ("o secret"), not "a ri?n". The spelling otherwise is pretty? freehand. I'll translate what I can, indenting the translated lines, assuming @mg is looking for a literal translation. The last few lines have a difficulty - the verb "fan" can mean to stay or to leave something alone, depending on the context; I think it's "stay" here.

Le gr? dhuit n?l radharc am cheann,
With love for you, there is no view in my mind

I was taught this simpler version by a guy from County Tipp who learned it from his mother. The translation is much simpler, with the first stanza talking about wearing out his shoes for her. I can't remember the rest, but I have the original page somewhere.

Eibhl?n a R?in

Do chaith m? mo bhr?ga leat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in,
Do chaith m? mo bhr?ga leat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in,
Do chaith m? mo bhr?ga leat
Do ghearr s?os na sc?rtha? leat
I ndu?l go mbeinn p?sta leat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in.

C?ad m?le f?ilte romhat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in,
C?ad m?le f?ilte romhat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in,
C?ad m?le f?ilte romhat
F?ilte 'gus fiche romhat
Naoi ec?ad m?le f?ilte romhat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in.

An dtiocfaidh t? n? an bhfanfaidh t?, a Eibhl?n, a r?in?
An dtiocfaidh t? n? an bhfanfaidh t?, a Eibhl?n, a r?in?
Tiocfaidh m? a's n? fhanfaidh m?,
B? romham a's leanfad th?
A ghr? le m' chro? istigh romham is t?, a Eibhl?n, a r?in.

Here is as much as I will change it. Third verse is from Griffin..odds and ends from Sigurson and other translations, new songs etc.

What I am realizing is there are great Catholic references..at least in mine. My hope in joy and woe..our hope in sorrow and in woe from Hail Holy Queen. Heart of hearts light of lights..deum de deu lumen de lumene from credo..as now will ever be..from glory be...

Will you not go with me Eileen Aroon
My beauteous a Store mo chroi Eileen Aroon
My hope in joy or woe Will you stay will you go
Only the constant know Eileen Aroon

What little land I have Eileen Aroon
Will prosper many calves Eileen Aroon
I will herd cows with thee Maintain my vows to thee
As now will ever be Eileen Aroon

Youth will in time decay, Eileen Aroon
Beauty must fade away, Eileen Aroon
Castles are sacked in war, chieftains are scattered far
Truth is a fixed star, Eileen Aroon

Eileen ni Kavanagh Eileen Aroon
Creature without a flaw Eileen Aroon
My rose and lily white Heart of hearts light of lights
Away with me this night Eileen Aroon

Well, here is what I came up with..I tried to stick to the translation and the story and bits of the commonly sung verses..actually it is not commonly sung here in PNW USA...I have probably heard exactly one person sing it in my life. I think because people instinctively might feel..I do anyway...that the words do not match the tune. And they certainly do not match the story, which is along the lines of Jock of Hazeldeen..she apparently was the daughter of a Lord Kavanaugh and he was a poet from a very respected but not prosperous family...

I am not totally pleased witht hese words and will incorporate any suggested changes if they seem right..but at least I can sing them...and the main thing is the beautiful tune..

Wilt thou away with me Eileen Aroon
___ a Store mo chroi Eileen Aroon
My hope in joy or woe Will you stay will you go
Only the constant know Eileen Aroon

What little land I have Eileen Aroon
Will flourish with many calves Eileen Aroon
I will herd cows with thee Maintain my vows to thee
As now will ever be Eileen Aroon

Youth will in time decay, Eileen Aroon
Beauty must fade away, Eileen Aroon
Castles are sacked in war, chieftains are scattered far
Truth is a fixed star, Eileen Aroon

Eileen ni kavanaugh Eileen Aroon
Creature without a flaw Eileen Aroon
My rose and lily white Heart of hearts light of lights
We must away tonight Eileen Aroon

at least we can see that George Sigerson preserved the meaning of the original - with some embellishment, and you know enough of the translation now to create your own version of the lyrics.

Thank you but I will keep searching..the tune is simple and just does not allow (to my mind) for such flowery and sheer quantity of words.

Well, it might not please you, but here goes:

translator: George Sigerson, a/k/a Erionnach
collection: Poets and Poetry of Munster (1860)
printed with the Gaelic, starting on p 173

I'm dazzled with love for thee, Eibhlin a ruin
To praise you is joy to me, Eibhlin a ruin
My glory most bright and fair
My solace through all life's care
My mirth and my gladness rare, Eibhlin a ruin
Nurse amid sorrow, sure,
Dove of the wood, so pure,
My breaking heart's only cure, Eibhlin a ruin

With thy frank and spotless youth, Eibhlin a ruin
Could you deceive my truth, Eibhlin a ruin
More beauteous than Venus, far,
More fair than the midnight star,
My Helen without stain you are, Eibhlin a ruin
My red rose, my lily white
My treasure unfading bright
Darling, my soul's delight, Eibhlin a ruin

I'd cross the salt sea with you, Eibhlin a ruin
I'd never never flee from you, Eibhlin a ruin
What soft tales I'd tell to you
I'd taste your lips' sweetness too
I'd sing mid the falling dew Eibhlin a ruin
I'd bring you where rivers glide
Where green boughs o'ershade the tide
'Neath music of birds to bide, Eibhlin a ruin

A joy beyond life would bless, Eibhlin a ruin
Should I wed your loveliness, Eibhlin a ruin
My fond arm would circle you
My heart be your guardian true
Ne'er cailin were loved like you, Eibhlin a ruin
My beauteous star, mild and clear
Sooner than cause a tear
O Death -- it were welcome here, Eibhlin a ruin

Mention of Carroll O'Daly / Cearbhaill Ó Dalaigh would be pertinent to this thread; the "oldest version" of the Gaelic, referred to in the original post, is sometimes attributed to this poet.

Stets will ich lieben dich,
Eileen-a-Roon!
Segnen dich ewiglich,
Eileen-a-Noon!
O für dich eilt' ich gern
Irland durch, nah und fern,
Hoffnung mein Licht, mein Stern,
Eileen-a-Roon!

O wie gewinn' ich dich,
Eileen - a - Roon?
Sag', o wie minn' ich dich,

Gern ohne Rast und Ruh'
Zög' ich der Ferne zu,
Würdest mein Hausweib du,

Drum, willst du ziehn mit mir,
Eileen-a-Roon?
Sag', oder bleibst du hier,

Nein, ich bin dein, bin dein!
Ziehe mit dir allein!
Einzig dein Lieb soll sein

Country Amhlghaidh - Tír Amhlaoidh - the land of Amhlaoidh (a person's name), Tirawley, County Mayo

the automated translation is no help to me, but I can translate some of the lines:

Ó mo mhórdháil ró-ghreidhnmhear thú; oh you are my pride and joy (modern spellings móráil and greadhain)
sólás na Soilse's tú,
Ó mo lile thú, mo mheidhir is tú,
mo bhruinneal thú go deimhin.
The Light of Lights
you are my lily, my merry delight, My fair maiden indeed

As mo chroí 'stigh níl leigheas gan tú - from my innermost heart there is no cure without you

Le cúirtéis na tlúig bhéit, is tú, - lúig is a herb, Béit could be béith (birch) - you have the stance of a birch tree (slender. willowy, upright? ? - description of appearance - or maybe to go with following line, the uprightness as in honest character )

Dúrt bréag nú's liam fhéinig tú,
Dúirt bréag nach liom fheínig tú - ? - it's a lie that you are not my own

Mar is breátha ná Bhénus tú,
'sis áilne ná'n Réilthean tú;
Ó mo Hélen tú gan bhéim is tú mo rós,
mo lil mo chraobh
Mo stór d'á bhfuil sa tsaol so's tú,
Agus rún mo chroí agus mo chléibh is tú

you are more beautiful than Venus,
lovelier than the stars [but another definition of réilthean or réilteann is a fair lady]
You are my Helen without [a flaw?], you are my rose, my lily, my branch,
My treasure in this world
And the secret of my heart and my bosom.

The rest of the verses are the ones I translated in previous threads.

I would herd cattle with you, Eibhlín my intended [or - my secret love]
I wish to make a match with you [to marry you], Eibhlín

I would go to a fair with you ...I would like to be alone with you

I would go overseas with you ... in danger [modern spelling contúirt] of drowning with you, I wish to be together/involved with you

Will you come or will you stay
I will come, I won't stay - I will follow you, love of my heart without you knowing (Gradh - modern spelling grá]

A hundred thousand welcomes to you, Eibhlín, a welcome and twenty to you, 100,000 welcomes to you, Eibhlín my love

OTHER SET OF LYRICS I DO NOT WANT

Gerald Griffin (1803-1840),
after the Gaelic of Carol O'Daly
1. When, like the early rose,
Eileen aroon!
Beauty in childhood blows;
Eileen aroon!
When, like a diadem,
Buds blush around the stem,
Which is the fairest gem?
Eileen aroon!

2. Is it the laughing eye?
Eileen aroon!
Is it the timid sigh?
Eileen aroon!
Is it the tender tone,
Soft as the string'd harp's moan?
Oh, it is the truth alone.
Eileen aroon!

3. When, like the rising day,
Eileen aroon!
Love sends his early ray,
Eileen aroon!
What makes his dawning glow
Changeless through joy or woe?
Only the constant know -
Eileen aroon!

4. I knew a valley fair,
Eileen aroon!
I knew a cottage there,
Eileen aroon!
Far in that valley's shade
I knew a gentle maid,
Flower of the hazel glade,
Eileen aroon!

5. Who in the song so sweet,
Eileen aroon!
Who in the dance so sweet,
Eileen aroon!
Dear were her charms to me,
Dearer her laughter free,
Dearest her constancy,
Eileen aroon!

6. Were she no longer true,
Eileen aroon!
What would her lover do?
Eileen aroon!
Fly with his broken chain,
Far o'er the bounding main
Never to love again,
Eileen aroon!

7. Youth must with time decay
Eileen aroon!
Beauty must fade away,
Eileen aroon!
Castles are sacked in war,
Chieftains are scattered far,
Truth is a fixèd star,
Eileen aroon!

Can someone post the oldest version of this..that includes owning or herding calves, and any sort of translation..not those more recently written words about the cottage and hazel glade etc...and another set equally..not true to the original shall we say.

I will post what I had later. I google translated it. Interesting.
