Subject: RE: Eileen Aroon 2016 true translation of lyrics From: Thompson Date: 05 Nov 17 - 03:13 AM Oh, for @mg, heifers is the "calves" reference you're looking for; heifers are young cows who have not yet mated. |
Subject: RE: Eileen Aroon 2016 true translation of lyrics From: Thompson Date: 04 Nov 17 - 05:22 PM For a start, it should be "a r?n" ("o secret"), not "a ri?n". The spelling otherwise is pretty? freehand. I'll translate what I can, indenting the translated lines, assuming @mg is looking for a literal translation. The last few lines have a difficulty - the verb "fan" can mean to stay or to leave something alone, depending on the context; I think it's "stay" here. Le gr? dhuit n?l radharc am cheann, With love for you, there is no view in my mind Eibhl?n a Ri?n, Is tr?cht ort is saidhbhreas liom, And to converse about you is riches to me Eibhl?n a Ri?n; ? mo mh?rdh?il r?-ghreidhnmhear th?, (This appears to say "O, my great assembly, too funny are you", which seems an unlikely statement of passion!) s?l?s na Soillse's t?, Light of lights are you ? mo lile th?, mo mheidhir is t?, O you are my lily, you are my merriment mo bhruinneal th? go deimhin. My fair maiden are you definitely A's mo chl?s d? bhfuil sa choill seo's t?. And my (??) if it were in this wood and you As mo chro? Subject: RE: Eileen Aroon 2016 true translation of lyrics From: GUEST,Colleen Jones Date: 02 Nov 17 - 04:39 PM I was taught this simpler version by a guy from County Tipp who learned it from his mother. The translation is much simpler, with the first stanza talking about wearing out his shoes for her. I can't remember the rest, but I have the original page somewhere. Eibhl?n a R?in Do chaith m? mo bhr?ga leat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in, Do chaith m? mo bhr?ga leat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in, Do chaith m? mo bhr?ga leat Do ghearr s?os na sc?rtha? leat I ndu?l go mbeinn p?sta leat, a Eibhl?n, a r?in. Subject: RE: Eileen Aroon 2016 true translation of lyrics From: mg Date: 14 Jul 16 - 03:36 PM Well, here is what I came up with..I tried to stick to the translation and the story and bits of the commonly sung verses..actually it is not commonly sung here in PNW USA...I have probably heard exactly one person sing it in my life. I think because people instinctively might feel..I do anyway...that the words do not match the tune. And they certainly do not match the story, which is along the lines of Jock of Hazeldeen..she apparently was the daughter of a Lord Kavanaugh and he was a poet from a very respected but not prosperous family... I am not totally pleased witht hese words and will incorporate any suggested changes if they seem right..but at least I can sing them...and the main thing is the beautiful tune.. Subject: RE: Eileen Aroon 2016 true translation of lyrics From: Felipa Date: 14 Jul 16 - 07:28 AM at least we can see that George Sigerson preserved the meaning of the original - with some embellishment, and you know enough of the translation now to create your own version of the lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Eileen Aroon 2016 true translation of lyrics From: mg Date: 13 Jul 16 - 08:00 PM Thank you but I will keep searching..the tune is simple and just does not allow (to my mind) for such flowery and sheer quantity of words. |

Love sends his early ray, Eileen aroon! What makes his dawning glow Changeless through joy or woe? Only the constant know - Eileen aroon! 4. I knew a valley fair, Eileen aroon! I knew a cottage there, Eileen aroon! Far in that valley's shade I knew a gentle maid, Flower of the hazel glade, Eileen aroon! 5. Who in the song so sweet, Eileen aroon! Who in the dance so sweet, Eileen aroon! Dear were her charms to me, Dearer her laughter free, Dearest her constancy, Eileen aroon! 6. Were she no longer true, Eileen aroon! What would her lover do?
