RIVER ROAD was written by Sylvia Tyson and I think was a minor hit for her. She sang it on the Ian & Sylvia Reunion concert that made the rounds of some of the PBS TV stations about 10 years ago. The version most people probably heard was done by Crystal Gayle and played on country music stations. The song can be found on the CD: "Sylvia Tyson - You were On My Mind" (1989, Stony Plain Records, Edmonton)

RIVER ROAD - Sylvia Tyson

Here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down River Road.
And I swear, once again that I'm never coming home
I'm chasing my dreams down River Road.

Mama said, "Listen child, you're too old to run wild
You're too big to go fishing with the boys these days."
So I grabbed some clothes and ran
Stole five dollars from the sugar can
Just a twelve-year-old jail-breaker running away.

Here I go....

Well I married a pretty good man and he tries to understand
But he knows I've got leaving on my mind these days.
When I get that urge to run I'm just like a kid again
A thirty-year-old jail-breaker running away.

And here I go once again with my suitcase in my hand
I'm running away down river road.
And I swear once again that I'm never coming home
In my dreams I still run down River Road.

I hope the Folk Police don't attack me for posting this.

to rich r: How kind and thoughtful of you to take the time out to pass on the words to river road. We are a group of 4 and sometimes more senior citizens who get together to play and sing the songs we remember from the days when we were younger and all of us say thank you. You mentioned the Folk Police is there a problem with giving out lyrics ? I sure would not want to get anyone in trouble.

Thank you so much for the info on River Road. I remember it so well because my daughter, a 16 year old at the time, was constantly running away. I had thought it was EmmyLou Harris singing it, however. I am just glad to find out about it.

Well, Sylvia Tyson wrote "River Road" and released it on the Quartette (a group of Canadian female singers that included the late Colleen Peterson) album of 1994. But she had earlier released it on her "Cool Wind from the North" album of 1976.

Crystal Gayle also had the song out in 1977.

I remember Crystal Gayle singing it on The Muppet Show, with dancing barnyard puppets around her.
