Rapparee, sorry, but it's bound to happen and I suppose we should be glad to survive long enough ourselves to remember these greats

I sure liked what he and Sylvia did. Then when he went out on his own it got more interesting. He took the cowboy songs back to the bone and made them more real, not only the old classics but his own.

Someday Soon - The lyrics are largely based on his romance with Sylvia Fricker. Her father, William, was not happy to see his daughter going out with this former rodeo rider.

My parents cannot stand him 'cause he works the rodeos
They say, "He's not your kind, he'll leave you cryin'"
If he asks, I'll follow him down the toughest row to hoe
Someday soon goin' with him, someday soon

When he visits me, my Pa ain't got one good word to say
Got a hunch he was as wild back in the early days

The obits are saying how Ian lost his voice. But they don't say that later he got it back through surgery. I last saw him perform about ten years ago and his voice sounded like it used to. I talked to him after the show and asked how it happened. He gave credit to a surgeon and said it was a miracle. I agreed.

Always among my favorite folk musicians, Ian Tyson was an artist in the ballad tradition, writing modern songs that felt timeless, something only a specially gifted performer can do.

Beyond that, he was a distinctive figure who had one foot in the revival, the other among the folk who comprise the ranching and rural culture of the North American West. No one will ever replace him.

However inevitable it may have been, his passing breaks my heart.

Here he is doing Summer Wages in his own inimitable style after a brief chat with Jerry Jeff Walker, who also left us recently.

I'll have to clean this up later.

COTTONWOOD CANYON
(Ian Tyson)

Tonight I hear the call of Cottonwood Canyon
Listen, you can hear it on the wind
Red tail hawk makin' circles
High above the canyon walls
Where I slept in the sand far below
Down where the clear waters flow

There ain't no cell phone towers in Cottonwood Canyon
Maybe some old coyote will give you a call
The cottonwood tree she sings to me
Songs of long ago
And I slept in the sand down below
Down where the clear waters flow

Can I find my way back to Cottonwood Canyon?
Have the drillers come?
Have I waited too long?
The cottonwood tree she cries to me
Make 'em leave it in the ground
And we'll sleep in the sand far below

Down where the clear waters flow
Down where the clear waters flow
