Subject: Help!Hank Williams song -Swing something
From: Peter T.
Date: 15 Sep 00 - 04:39 PM

Waiting for a subway car yesterday and in a hurry, I heard a busker singing an interesting song. As the train pulled in, I tossed him a dollar and said what is that song -- he said, Hank Williams! Hank Williams what? I replied. "Swing your gate towards me" or something like that. Haven't seen him since. Anyone know anything about this song? I can't find a record of it associated with Hank Williams Sr, Jr, or III.

yours, Peter T.

Hi Peter. Hank had a song called 'Swing Wide Your Gate of Love'. That may be the one you are after.

Peter, I was pushed off the computer earlier by my son - he had a prior booking - before I had a chance to finish my above message. If it is the song you want, it was not written by Hank Williams. It was a minor hit for Hank Thompson on Herb Rippa's hillbilly and western swing label, Blue Bonnet. Rippa subsequently sold Thompson's contract to Capitol and the lad went on to greater, or at least more lucrative, things. It has the distinction of being the first track on Bear Family's massive 12 CD box set devoted to Thompson, but appears on various Thompson compilations. I have Hank Williams' cover of it on a double LP: Hank Williams 'I Ain't Got Nothing But Time: December 1946 - August 1947' Polydor 825 548-1, but I am sure it has been reissued on various CD compilations. Have a look in CDDB.

Look what I found!:-)

SWING WIDE YOUR GATE OF LOVE
Written by S. Nathan and H. Thompson

Swing wide your gate of love, open wide up your heart
I knew when I first met you that you'd be my sweetheart
Swing wide your gate of love and please don't let me fall
I know you're gonna love me after all

(Chorus)
Swing wide the gate and leave it open
Towards the center of your heart I'll be bound
And I'll mend the heart that has been broken
I'm not the kind of guy to let you down

So, swing wide your gate of love, open it for me
For you are the one I want, my darlin', can't you see
Make up your mind to like me and to be my turtledove
I love you, so swing wide your gate of love

(Repeat chorus)

(Repeat last verse)
