Hi can you help me, I am looking for a song sung by Christy Moore in London about the Birmingham six. The last line goes something like, "she alone holds the key, and will not set them free. Many thanks

It's hard to write about it because when you write about it you end up doing it and then what you meant to say disappears. What you need is the greater than and less than symbols (sometimes called "angle brackets") -- they are the shift of the comma and the period, respectively. Replace the left paren with the less-than sign, and the right paren with the greater-than sign, in the following:

(a href=http://www.christymoore.net/)http://www.christymoore.net/(/a)

This will give you what is in my post, above. In general,

(a href=URL)words-that-show-up-in-blue(/a)

where you replace "URL" with the actual URL (address), and "words-that-show-up-in-blue" with the words you want to show up in blue.

Again, replacing the parentheses with the "angle brackets" or in other words greater-than and less-than signs.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, but the first one will SAY it goes to christymoore.net and will in fact go to geocities. Which is VERY confusing.

Close! Except you're meant to replace the letters URL with the actual address ("URL" stands for "Universal Resource Locator" -- webspeak for address). The second one, if you left off the letters URL, would take you to mudcat. Which is of course more helpful if one isn't already there, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere! :-)

LOL Noreen - I was going to say there's easy to follow instructions in the 'Newcomer's Guide FAQ' thingy but I kind of admire the way Mousetheif made it so easy to learn and Kara picked it up so quickly. Impressive. And anyway, I would have looked all patronising and stuff. So I didn't.

Doesn't tell you how to make words float though. How DO you do that?

So, Catrin, shall I look all patronising and stuff and refer you..... :0) ... no I think it was in one of the many HTML threads that I picked that up. As our resident rodent pointed out, 'tis difficult to explain HTML online as it goes 'n' does it instead of staying around to explain itself, but earwig-o :

Precede the floating words with the word marquee surrounded by angled brackets and follow the floating words with /marquee surrounded by angled brackets.

Use with discretion! Only works with Internet explorer, Netscape has its own version i.e. not standard HTML therefore frowned upon.

If MudGuard is around, this is someone taking my name in vain, I don't use those marquee things!!!!

(To those who thought this thread was still about Christy Moore- SORRY!!)

In all the discussion about how to make links, they never got around to finding the title of the song. Anybody know it?

Here's SCAPEGOATS, but it doesn't contain the line Mike quoted.

Lyrics copied from http://mysongbook.de/msb/songs/s/scapegoa.html

SCAPEGOATS
(E. Cowan / Christy Moore)

Hugh Callaghan, Paddy Hill, Gerry Hunter, Johnny Walker,
Billy Power, Dick McIlkenny--that's their names.

There was five men playing poker on the Heysham train.
Fate was dealing them a cruel hand.
Hugh Callaghan was walking home through the evening rain
Not knowing what lay in store for him.

You'll find traces of nitro on cigarettes and matches,
On Formica tabletops and on decks of playing cards.
When forensic found traces on the hands of these six men,
The police drove up from Birmingham and they were hoping the case was closed.

Have you ever seen the mugshots that were taken
After forty-eight hours in custody?
Battered and bruised, haunted looks upon their faces.
The Judge accepted they confessed willingly.
Please take another look at what you see.

If you tell me my family are being terrorised,
Keep me awake for six days and nights, confused and terrified,
In the lonely dark of night I'll swear that black is white,
If you'll let me just lie down and close my eyes.
I'll sign anything if you'll let me close my eyes.

Scales of justice, balance up your act.
Am I talking to myself or to the wall?

Hugh Callaghan, Paddy Hill, Gerry Hunter, Johnny Walker,
Billy Power, Dick McIlkenny--scapegoats all.

For sixteen years, they've been talking to the wall.

[Sung by Christy Moore on "Smoke & Strong Whiskey" 1991.]

Another candidate is Christy Moore's 'God's truth' which is also about the Birmingham Six (but also has not the line in question).

Another guess: Any Mick'll do (look at the end of the third verse to see why I think that may be the song). Not written by Christy Moore, but perhaps sung by him?

Wolfgang
