Subject: RE: BS: VEGEMITE & Other Aussie Dangers II. From: Rapparee Date: 30 Jul 03 - 08:37 AM I was certain I'd heard of Vegemite somewhere in some context. We used to use it for demolition work when I was in the Army. You'd scoop out a bunch of it, mold it to whatever you were going to blow up, stick in a detonating cap and fuse, move back a good ways, push the ol' detonator or light the fuse, and BLOOOIEE! Related to C-4 plastic explosive, I think, but more powerful. You could also eat it, but nobody I knew ever wanted to eat something that was that explosive. Unless...Spaw, were you in the Army? And studied demolitions? At least, I think that's what it was and what happened. It was back in the sixties, and everything is so fuzzy now.... |

At the end of the tour, they gave you a lunch, all Heinz products, of course, a plastic pickle pin, and showed a film of people eating Heinz products all over the world. Australian adults were shown barbecuing with Heinz Barbecue Sauce. We were also told that Australian babies were fed Heinz strained lamb brains. I felt very sorry for Australian babies. |

According to these gurus it does wonders (I tend to take these claims very critically and skeptically unless solid - pun intended - evidence is provided). Example of one coconut oil site Armed with this sort of informational weaponry you may be able to blind the CCD's (chocolate crackle detractors) with science (or is it pseudo-science?) long enough to get through the door with the goods. And you are promoting confections of distilled cholesterol (aka: Copha® ... a proprietory brand of purified coconut oil) ...? OK - Don't worry about me - since my doctor pointed out, some 2½ years back, that I was showing signs of type 2 diabetes, I have cracked down on the diet and exercise regimes. (I weigh about 10 kg less than when you met me at St Albans!) Anyway, whenever I mention Copha - say, in the context of making "traditional" local sweets/snack foods like "Chocolate Crackles" for BMC functions ... all the medical and nursing types react as if I had just tried to put "The Evil Eye" on them! Apparently it no longer enjoys the favour and enthusiasm I remember from the days of my youth. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: BS: VEGEMITE & Other Aussie Dangers II. From: Helen Date: 29 Jul 03 - 04:47 AM I've found a good substitute for copha if any of you Oz-food-ophiles want to have a bash at making coconut ice or chocolate crackles. In my local health food store they sell jars of coconut oil. It was in a liquid form when I bought it but after I put it in the refrigerator it turned into copha, or the nearest thing to it. It has that lovely delicate coconut taste. Yum! I assume that this would be available in other countries apart from Oz. Also a month or so ago I read in the news (amazing what makes the news these days!) that Tim-Tams were going to be available at a shop in London. Is it called Tesco's or something like that? Helen |

Subject: RE: BS: VEGEMITE & Other Aussie Dangers II. From: John in Brisbane Date: 11 Dec 00 - 07:56 PM VEGEMITE A KEY TO NEW DRUG Herald Sun, Tuesday, December 5 2000
A VITAMIN found in Vegemite is helping in the search for new drugs to fight hepatitis C. Researchers have discovered vitamin B12, found in large concentrations in the human liver, may have a role in the regulation of hepatitis C. A team from Brisbane's Royal Children's Hospital found that higher levels of B12 in the liver meant higher levels of viral load. Researcher Dr William Lott said hepatitis C often remained dormant because the virus survived at levels too low for the immune system to detect. "If you could artificially raise the load to a threshold where the body recognised it, then you could perhaps mount an immune response," Dr Lott said. But he advised people against gorging themselves on the spread, saying there was no evidence B12 had a protective effect against the disease. He said once the mechanism was better understood, the research could be used to design a drug that may inhibit the disease's replication. Regards, John For decades Australians have been reminded that Vegemite is rich in Vitamin B12, Niacin and Iron. |
Subject: RE: BS: VEGEMITE & Other Aussie Dangers II. From: catspaw49 Date: 04 Oct 00 - 09:47 PM Yep, I did see it Helen.......and I had forgotten that line until then, although Karen remembered it right away. That's about as associated with Oz as Matilda anymore isn't it? Back in '83, Australia II left the dock each morning of the the Cup trials and finals with that song blaring from monstrous speakers on the towboat. And of course, they came in each afternoon to huge crowds of fans singing "Waltzing Matilda." I don't know how you all remember Aussie II. For me, even though we lost the Cup, John Bertrand and her crew represent probably the greatest moment in Cup history. Were I Australian, I'd find it a high point as well. They represented the best the sport has to offer. Spaw |
