Subject: online edition Child's ballads From: Letty Date: 23 Nov 00 - 09:32 AM Hi all, Is there an (scholarly) online edition of Child's ballads? I've been to www.childballads.com, but it's not complete. Thanks, Letty |

Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: MMario Date: 23 Nov 00 - 10:42 AM Letty - I have been unable to find one in three years of searching. |
Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: Sorcha Date: 23 Nov 00 - 12:30 PM My friend Judith owns the complete Child set--if you need something specific, let me know and I'll ask her to bring it in..............there are either very few (or no?) tunes in it though. |
Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: MMario Date: 23 Nov 00 - 03:41 PM I DO have the text of the songs - without commentary. |
Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: Sorcha Date: 23 Nov 00 - 04:10 PM I believe hers has commentary--it's 5 vols. She also has the complete Sharp and Niles........ |
Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 23 Nov 00 - 09:08 PM There isn't a full online version, though there is an incomplete concordance (song texts only; no notes) which requires database software. The work involved in processing the entire thing is very considerable (nearly 3,000 pages of extremely detailed text). I'm working on it, but it's a long-term project. Dick and Susan (founders of the Digital Tradition) have plans involving it too. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: Sandy Paton Date: 23 Nov 00 - 10:57 PM There are a few tunes in Child's addenda at the end of the final volume. Not much help. What you really need for tunes is Bertrand Bronson's The Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads. This is in four very expensive and now out of print volumes from Princeton. Until Dick and Susan get them all up on the Mudcat, I suggest you use inter-library loan (and maybe a good copy machine). Sandy |

Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: dick greenhaus Date: 26 Nov 00 - 09:25 PM It's a project in the working. Lot of work tho. We're adding at least one version of each Child Ballad to DigiTrad as we go along. That's work, too. |
Subject: RE: Help: online edition Child's ballads From: John in Brisbane Date: 26 Nov 00 - 09:48 PM And as of last week I now have access to Bronson for extended periods - it's taken me a while to manage it. Regards, John |
