For anyone who has recently inherited a small fortune, there is a listing on eBay for all five volumes of the Dover edition of Francis J. Child's The English and Scottish Popular ballads from a UK dealer. There is a reserve price, not surprisingly, but if you REALLY want the books... Well, there you are.

Here's a clickie for it. Dover Child Good luck.

Sandy

And I gotta say... CHECK YOUR LOCAL THRIFT STORES, LIBRARY SALES, AND USED BOOK STORES!!!

About a year ago, I picked up all five volumes in a local library book sale for $2 each, in better condition than these.

Yes, they knew they were worth more. But they would rather sell them to someone who'd read and use them.

Keep yer eyes open!

Well, I looked for bargain prices for the Dover Child for a long time, and came up with nothing. Sandy led me to the five-volume set for $100 from a bookstore in Maine a couple years ago, and I'm glad I have 'em (even though I did find one volume for two bucks while I was waiting for the set to arrive in the mail).

Mark Heiman's Loomis House Press (click) has issued the first volume (Ballads 1-53) of their reissue of Child. The price is fairly reasonable, $24.95 for paperback and $34.95 for hardcover. Mark did the programming for the Mac version Windows beta version of the Digital Tradition.

Thanks for the clickie, Joe. I haunt used books stores, and have NEVER seen the legendary 2.00 price on this. Usually in a glass case, with BIG numbers. Splurged for Bronsons on Books on Demand, but out of ducats at this point.
