SEA COAL
(Graeme Miles)

Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call
Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call.

We go out in the morning our spades in our hand
And scrape up the coal where the tide meets the sand,
And fill our black sacks, in rows there they stand.

Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call.
Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call.

If we don't buy a sack then we'll have nowt at all,
For we need a few shillings to buy bread and meat,
If we must go hungry at least we'll have heat.

Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call.
Who'll Buy, Who'll buy Hear the man cry.

Its only a few shillings for the finest of fuel,
Come stoke up your fires lads, the weather is cruel
It's cold in the winter round old Hartlepool.

Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call.
See him, See him at the end of the road,

If we don't go and buy soon it all will be sold
We can see by his wagon that small is his load,
And if we must go hungry we needn't go cold

Sea Coal, Sea Coal, Hear the man call.

Do you have a tune for that, by any chance?  If you were wondering how to do line-breaks here, by the way, it's all explained in Joe Offer's FAQ thread, here:  Posting Lyrics

Malcolm

Malcolm Douglas

Haven't had time to learn about line breaks but I intend to. Thanks for the Joe Offer thread info.

I sing the song but I have no idea how to put post the tune. I am not really musical and would have difficulty writing down the notes even.

Any suggestions?

You might ask BAZ ... haven't heard from him in some time ... but he has a recording of this song which he kindly made available to me. BAZ can probably reduce it to a midi as he has in the past.
A fine tune it is with lots of variation in tempo.
Cheers, Brian

Baz.

If you read this please help. Graeme is a friend and this song is just mighty. It certainly sent tingles up my back when I first heard it.

Graeme is in the process of producing a book containing about 60 song which should be completed in the new year.
Sea Coal was one of the first songs he ever wrote
The version posted is one of at least three that I know of
1) The original often sung by Robin Dale in the North of England
2) The version Graeme submitted for a song competition in the New City Songster -- Which I sing
3) The version recorded by the Wilson Family

the lyrics of version 2 are ...

Sea Coal, Sea Coal, hear the man call
If we goes and buys a bag , we'll have nowt left at all
For we need our few shillings to buy bread and meat
And if we must go hungry at least we'll have heat
Who'll buy, who'll buy, hear the man cry
Just a few shillings for the finest of fuel
Come stoke up your fires now for the weather is cruel
It's a cold place in winter ,is old Hartlepool

See him, see him, at the end of the road
If we don't go and buy quickly it all will be sold
I can see by his wagon that small is his load
But if we must go hungry, we needn't go cold
^^

Nutty,

Is Graeme on the net? If so send me an e-mail hendersondirect@hotmail.com

I want to get my hands on the book when it is published.

I got it from Robin Dale in October 1999 in Birtley.

Nutty, Could you print this thread for Graeme, after it accumulates a little more praise? Anyone who could write songs like "El Dorado" & "Exercise 77", thinking one's a throwaway & the other's an unfinished song, needs all the praise they can get. Actually I think he gets alot of praise, but has a hard time taking it all in, or agreeing with it. Some people are unbelievably humble...

I've been meaning to write Graeme a "fan letter" & ask for the lyrics to "An Evening in Summer", for a while. Martyn Wyndham-Read gave me Graeme's address, but I keep losing it before I ever get around to snail mailing him, (probably because I spend too much time emailing...)Does anyone know the lyrics to "An Evening in Summer"? It has a few lyrics which are confusing me, probably because I'm not British... Does anyone have the lyrics? If it will be in the book, I can wait...

I live in Boston, USA, & have been a huge fan of Graeme's since I heard Martyn Wyndham-Read sing some of his songs last time he was in the US, a few years ago. Martyn has sung one of Graeme's songs on at least 4 or more of his recordings, some of which are CD's easily available on the net.

And if you don't already have the Wilson Family's LP, (titled "Horumaye" or something like that), with a dozen or so of Graeme's songs, including "Sea Coal", I recommend you get a copy of it somehow. It's probably out of print. I'd be happy to tape it for anyone who can't get it elsewhere, (though I can't promise when I'd get around to snail mailing it...)

Nutty, could you also keep us informed about the new compilation of Graeme's previously unrecorded songs that should come out on CD in the next year or so? Some of Graeme's better known fans, like Martyn Wyndham-Read, & I think Sara Gray, & I can't remember who else is working on it. It should be great!

I sing 5 of Graeme's songs, & get very positive feedback about them. Some are great chorus songs, & some are songs of love & life that would melt your heart. Graeme is definitely one of my favorite songwriters...

Does anyone know of any other recordings of Graeme's songs?

Judy

Graeme has written more than 300 songs which are spread around his many friends.
Even now, after knowing him for about 30 years, I am still hearing new ones. This is mainly because he is singing again - for a number of years he lost his enthusiasm for folk music but happily now he is visiting clubs again and singing his songs.

I will certainly print out this thread and let him see it and as I said, I will keep people informed about the book and future CD's

Nutty, Thanks! Glad to hear Graeme is singing his songs again. 300 songs! I'll bet there are some real gems, both recent & old, that we haven't heard yet. We might not get to hear them all, but I hope at least you & others close to Graeme eventually hear most of them...

Lucy, I just found out about Jinks Stack, & Graham O'Callaghan, a member of Jinks Stack who just put out his own CD with another of Graeme's songs. Great selections of songs on all their CD's. You can hear samples on Jinks Stack's web site. I don't think Graham O'Callaghan has samples on his site yet. (You might know this already, but for the benefit of those who don't...)

Have just come across this thread TEN YEARS LATER, having heard "Sea Coal" performed by two ladies singing in wonderful harmony at Bracknell Folk Club this week!

Jon Boden has now also recorded a version which is widely diffused on the net (largely due to his "Folk Song a Day" project), but the tune is slightly different.

The Wilson family's version can be found on Youtube.

Thanks to George for the original post, as it includes a (first) verse which I haven't come across anywhere else. Will add it to my lyrics and try to learn it!

Does anyone have lyrics for "Smoke over Belfast"? It's on the Martyn Wyndham-Read CD of Graeme's songs , but no lyrics in the sleeve. If no-one has I'll try and transcribe from the Cd: Martyn's diction is petty clear.

Tattie Bogle: If you want to ask for a different song than the one this thread is about, it's best to start a new thread.

Haven't you been around long enough to know that?

Recently, I saw a cartoon like TV show/short about collecting sea coal. Children were doing it and laughing at a crippled man who joined them. They stopped laughing when he filled his bag in a fraction of the time it took them.
Drawing a blank on where and when I saw it.
Anyone else catch it? More details?
Mary

Hi Jim,
Yes I know that, but thought this thread might pick up a few Graeme Miles afficionado, so it was worth a shot. My friend and I have now done the CD + pause button job, compared notes and agreed no Mondegreens, so we might one day share the words to "Smoke over Belfast".

Barbara, the song I was looking for is not in either of Graeme's books, as another friend has told me. I already have one of them.
