Holy cow! This has gotten complicated for a technological dinosaur like moi.

I need to get a new small recording machine, and have been looking a mini disc recorders....but also at high quality cassette recorders as well. Can anyone help?

Is the sound MUCH better on a Mini disc than say a Marantz cassette machine?

There have been threads where folks put blue clickies to discussion groups on the various merits of different recorders but I haven't been able to call them up. I really want to get something pretty fast, so if anyone's got any "small recorder feedback" I'd sure appreciate it. Thanks a ton.

Rick

Rick, check with Bonnie and see how she is doing with her minidisk. She could probably tell you quite a bit.

Rick, I use an old (ca. 1987) Tascam 244 Portastudio. It is four channel, so with some judicious track bouncing, I can be a one man band. I've been pretty satisfied with the sound, even had one or two guys who are more knowlegable than I am comment that it sounded pretty good. I haven't tried any of the minidisc recorders. Are you going to be doing much or any overdubbing? Or do you just wnat something that sounds good where you only will be recording everything in one pass?
Jim

Don't know if this is a consideration, but you might want to make sure of being able to digitise if you go with a regular cassette. I think with a minidisc it is digital, already, right?

For some quick answers, you might want to wade through these:

Good luck!

Mini disc over cassette, hands down. Better sound quality, and random access, as opposed to rewinding or fast forwarding to get to where you want. You can get to any "counter" you establish, instantly. I'd say go for it.

Thanks a lot folks. Found what I needed from one of kat's links. A bunch of customers rating minidisc recorders

Hi Jim, I use a tascam four track as well for working out ideas. Great machine. The minidisc will be for keeping in my pocket!

And I'd suggest that, instead of a cassette player, get a table-top/rack-mounted minidisc recordert with digital I/O (I use a Sony MDS-JE530 at work) It's not much more expensive than the pocket minidisc - far cheaper than a really good cassette player, anyway. Then you can transfer your tracks digitally onto another disc (or onto a computer - if you have a 'digital in' soundcard that is - and make a CD of them or ...).
Besides, table-tops have larger buttons on them or can be remote-controlled, if you want to listen to the discs sitting in your comfy-chair or whatever :-)

I bought a Sony minidisk walkman and I'm amazed at the sound it produces. You can't mix tracks or anything but for just me and the guitar it does fine. I then run it through Cool Edit on the computer and burn it onto a CD. I think the minidisc to computer connection converts it to analog but I can't see where it loses much in the transistion. What I do is work on songs and record them on to the minidisc. Then I make a CD of my work off of the computer. I listen to this (mostly in the car) so I can critique my own performance and make mental notes of what I could do differently, songs that just don't work well for me, etc. It's so easy and hassle free. I just ditch the "practice" CD's when I've learned all I need from them. It also helps with memorizing lyrics. And I actually produced one CD that I've sold a few copies of - no complaints from anybody. So that's my two cents worth - I'd go with a minidisk.

my boyfriend & i just bought a MD recorder yesterday to tape a show tonight. There was one important thing the research uncovered: we were going to buy a low-end SONY (MZR500) but the input is such that it would have required a mic with phantom power. Instead, we got the higher-end model (MZR700) and a "regular" condenser mic will work fine.

Thanks again folks. I'm going to do a bit of research on Marantz tape recorders now. Remember what I'm looking for is something "portable".

Why thank you Peter. I learned it all from you. Remember that thread you started about three years ago called "Those wacky Danish Pastries"? Who'da guessed it was about the punctuation in the First Folio of Hamlet? My fave was "My Dingaling's Busted". Seven hundred replies to your question about doorbells!

Cheers

Rick, two years ago I e-mailed you for some chords to Doc's Omie Wise, and you suggested I get a good portable tape recorder. I bought the one you suggested, a Sony Pro-Walkman, and it's been great. Why don't you get one of those?

Marty, I'd KILL to still have my Sony Pro! Brand new Duracell batteries leaked into it, and it was TOAST! Sony couldn't fix it....they told me to sue Duracell! Yeah, sure.

They don't make the model anymore. Yours isn't for sale is it?

Sorry I misunderstood your first message, Rick, thought you were planning of buying both MD and cassette player!

But, believe it or not, when you get a minidisc, you'll also have a new thing to kill for (unless you've already done that since last Friday:)!

Rick, I have an old three-head Marantz (CD-330) portable stereo recorder, which has been superb for 25 years or so, and an even older Uher equivalent. Only downside to both is that they closed my mind to the minidisc, which in my view eclipses them on every front when it comes to capturing sound in the field. I've just bought a Sharp (obsolete model) minidisc recorder in a second-hand store for 50GBP, and will never return to the mechanics and tribulations of tape-transport glitches, motor noise, bulky batteries etc, except out of historical curiosity.

Thank you folks. I still haven't pulled the trigger!! Was going to buy a Sony MD but figured the Marantz would be more reliable (read some horror stories about MD servicing). I simply can't make up my mind...bugger!

That's a fair point Rick. But a minidisc is little more than a glorified floppy disk drive. There's not a lot that can go wrong (especially compared with a cassette recorder). How often do you hear of a floppy disk drive failing? Take the plunge - I swear to God you'll be amazed you didn't do it sooner.

Yeah, Rick. What Fionn said. I love my Sony MZ-R37 (MD Walkman)! I recorded something like 80 hours of sound during the Adventure under (as you might imagine) a wide variety of conditions. It did extremely well as did the Sony Electret Condenser Microphone I used. In fact, I am hoping to compile some of the sounds from the Adventure into a CD that I will send to Max someday soon.

You want to know the down side? Okay. You don't have the capability to play your recording so that others can hear it. Well, at least not instantly, unless you own a full sized MD player attached to your stereo system. Otherwise, you would need to download the sounds into your computer and then play back the files through the computer's sound system. Or you can use those files from your computer to create custom CD's that you can playback in a variety of ways.

Oh, were you aware that there are some editing capabilities with a MD?

You can get a set of very small speakers to attach to the earphone "out" on an MD, if you want others to hear what you recorded.

I will never go back to recording on tape. I love my Sony MiniDisk recorder.

GOD (however each of us may perceive him/her) BLESS ALL OF YOU! I've made up my mind! I'm buying a new Sony Minidisc recorder tomorrow. It's a new model (apparently) and a little cheaper than the other two they had (it's about 250.oo Canadian) Don't remember the model number but it's not the "700 or 900" one.

I'm SO relieved.

Good point Jande. I just lug my 80watt PC speakers around with me if I want to play back so others can hear, but there are obviously much smaller speakers around. You do of course need mains power within reach.

I bought a Minidisk, a Sharp, last year as a personal hifi for use when cycling (yes, I know I shouldn't plug in when on the road, but I do). My wife 'discovered' it and tried it out for recording her singing lessons. Now I've lost it, she uses it all the time. No hiss, no rumble, near CD quality and random access in a tiny machine that weighs almost the same as my old Sony Walkman. Go MD you won't be disappointed.

Got it, Done it, Not discombobulated anymore! Also got lucky. Was heading to the "Sony Store" and dropped into a stereo store on Yonge st. here in Toronto. They had the old, simple discontinued "37" model, for half of what I would have paid for the one I was going to get. It's perfect so far.

Thank you again for all the help. Your input truly helped.

Rick

Just an afterthought on plugging in speakers. (I realise you'll be aware of this, Rick, but for the benefit of anyone who might not be...) VOlume on playback is regulated by both the minidisc and the speaker volume controls. Remember to turn one or other control down to near zero if you leave the speakers plugged in while recording, and if they are anywhere near the mic. Otherwise you risk feedback, which could interfere with the live show, as well as your recording of it.

I'm sure you've done the right thing, Rick - especially with a deal like that on offer. Good luck with it.
