Subject: Sweet Bride
From: GUEST,Ryan S.

Hoping someone can help me here, Kate Rusby does a beautiful song in concert about a young lady who meets a ghostly figure on horseback while walking along the beach. He sweeps her of her feet and takes her away to be his bride. I think it was called Sweet Bride but cannot find the lyrics for it anywhere. Can anyone help me?

SWEET BRIDE
(Kate Rusby)

A lady was walking on a midsummer's day
The birds they were whistling so merrily and gay
When along came a white steed in the finest array
And it carried a young man these words he did say

CHORUS
Come live by the great moon
That rules the strong tide
Climb up on my horse love
And be my sweet bride

I bid you good morning, this young man did say
And where might you be going on such a nice day
I'm walking to view sir the bonny blue sea
For it's all I have left now that means much to me

CHORUS

If that's all you love now, come riding with me
You'll live in my castle deep under the sea
You'll sleep in my gold bed, my fine silken sheets
And have gifts of great beauty from all that you meet

CHORUS

She's up in the saddle and away they did ride
The horse skipped and danced over waves on the tide
Now she's only remembered by this story I tell
From an old man on horseback who once knew her well

CHORUS

A friend of mine asked me if I knew anything about the background of this song, which - unfortunately - I don't. Perhaps some other mudcatters can help us. The main point of discussion was, who is the mysterious lover (sounds to me a bis like the silkie theme where the bride is lured away to live in the sea.

A friend of mine asked me if I knew anything about the background of Kate Rusby's "Sweet Bride", which - unfortunately - I don't. Perhaps some of you Mudcatters can help us with the problem. The main question was if it's a happy or a sad song and who is the mysterious young man who asks the young maid to ne his bride in his castle under the water. Any ideas?

It doesn't have any background in so much as it's a contempory song, written by Kate.

I guess that it's up to you to decide whether it's happy or sad.

from what little I could find on it - it appears to be a composite of a number of shape-shifting/water-dwelling non-human meets human type tales. Whether sad or happy depends a lot on how you view the whole situation - and whether you believe the stated ending.

Using the lyrics Sorcha posted and listening to the recording, let's see if I can clean up the lyrics a bit and add punctuation.

SWEET BRIDE
(Kate Rusby)

A lady was walking on a midsummer's day,
The birds they were whistling, so merrily and gay;
Along came a white steed in the finest array,
And it carried a young man, these words he did say:

CHORUS
"Come live by the great moon
That rules the strong tide,
Climb up on my horse, love,
And be my sweet bride."

"I bid you good morning," this young man did say,
"And where might you be going on such a nice day?"
"I'm walking to view, sir, the bonny blue sea,
For it's all I have left now that means much to me."

CHORUS

"If that's all you love now, come riding with me,
You'll live in my castle deep under the sea;
You'll sleep in my gold bed, my fine silken sheets,
And have gifts of great beauty from all that you meet."

CHORUS

She's up in the saddle, and away they did ride,
The horse skipped and danced over waves on the tide;
She's only remembered by this story I tell
From an old man on horseback who once knew her well.

CHORUS

Do Kate Rusby's recordings have any background information on what led her to write this song?

The booklet of Kate Rusby's album Sleepless has just these lyrics but no explaining notes.
