Subject: oh danny boy From: GUEST,wpciii55@yahoo.com Date: 30 Mar 02 - 04:45 PM Could anyone help to identify the name of a movie that was at the theaters around 1941. It was a war movie and had at the end a u-boat and a soldier off the coast of england at which time they played the tune "Oh Danny Boy." My mom has been trying to identify and find the movie for years. She was a young girl 10 years old at the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Captain Bill Cox |

Subject: RE: oh danny boy From: Suffet Date: 31 Mar 02 - 07:20 AM It is certainly not Angels with Dirty Faces. That movie is about two delinquent kids, one of whom grows up to be a gangster and the other grows up to be a priest. The two of them compete for the attention (and souls, so to speak) of the teenage boys in their old neighborhood. Like the two antagonists, played by James Cagney and Pat O'Brien, these young men can go down either path, Evil or Good. Angels with Dirty Faces is one of the great morality plays of the American cinema. In the end, even the gangster is redeemed, and like Christ he goes to his death to redeem others. But there are two differences. The death is not on the Cross but, in celebration of 20th century technology, on the Chair. And, more important, only the priest knows the gangster died a hero. To the young fellows in the neighborhood, he died like yellow rat. And no one sang Danny Boy./i> --- Steve |

Subject: RE: oh danny boy From: Willa Date: 31 Mar 02 - 03:45 PM It's just possible that 16 above (The Waterfront) might be the one. Films were not shown as promptly (in the UK) in those days as they are today. Take a look at the synopsis on the site and see if it matches what your mother remembers. |
Subject: RE: oh danny boy From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 31 Mar 02 - 05:54 PM I assume you mean #19. However, from the sound of it, this was a movie about the docks. |
