He introduced it by saying: "I've never actually seen anybody do this, but it struck me as something they'd probably do down South..." (I was living in Houston, Texas at the time, very much against my will, and resentful as only a thirteen year old boy can be about such things. I still thank Mason for that gift of humor and insight that brightened an otherwise miserable year! Then, years later, I came across an Associated Press blurb in the paper that mentioned the upcoming celebration of Yellville, Arkansas' "Annual Toad Suck Parade"! I'm certain it was inspired in some fashion by Messr. Williams' poetic jibe, but I've never been able to garner further details…nor to attend the doubtlessly awesome festivities. Anyone know anything more about this fabled festival?) Regretfully, I remember only snippets of "Them Toad Suckers" and, like you, hope someone can recall the entire opus. Williams composed a wonderful corpus of "Them Poems" along the lines of "Toad Suckers", including one of my favorites, "Them Moose Goosers", which boasted such deathless lines as: "Look at them moose goosers, ain't they obtuse? Sneakin' through the woods, just a-goosin' them moose. Goosin them huge moose, goosin them tiny, goosin them little moose in they heinie. How 'bout them moose goosers?, Ain't they dumb? Some use a um-barella, some use their thumb…" If nothing else, I found a Mason Williams Homepage (see URL below) that promises to put up some or all of "Them Poems" in the near future. Judy, thanks for jogging my memory! THEM TOAD SUCKERS (Mason Williams) "How about them toad suckers? Ain't they clods? Sittin' there suckin' them green toady frogs. Suckin' them hop-toads, suckin' them chunkers, Suckin them leapy types, suckin' them plunkers. Look at them toad suckers. Ain't they snappy? Suckin' them bog-frogs sure makes 'em happy. Them huggermugger toad suckers, way down south, Stickin' them sucky toads in they mouth! How to be a toad sucker? No way to duck it. Gittchyseff a toad, rare back and suck it!" ....and then the spotlight dimmed again, leaving the stage dark. On the record,(which I am looking at as I type), he has little intros to each 'them' song, with a homey explanation about each. I am sure that when I saw it on TV there was NO introduction..(perhaps he did it more than once). I remember sitting there stunned as that spotlight dimmed....The record is called "The Mason Williams Listening Matter" Everest 3265...it says he was the head writer on the Smothers Brothers show in 67-68.The record has a date of April 11, 1969 on it.... (he also sang what he called his attempt at country music on this record..."You Done Stompt on my Heart" All the 'Them' songs were short things, like Haiku...same rhythm, same length... |

1. You get kicked off after 1 hour of use. You can immediately go back on. The idea was to let the most amount of users on without having busy signals.
I have been on extensively for the past two years (read that as 1-3hr/day) and can count on one hand the number of times I've gotten a busy signal. (Better than some mainstream ISPs I've heard of that start with A and end with L). Usually it's been when they're upgrading. It is a problem to me once in a while when I need to download a large file. But I hear Netscape is going to let you continue a download (like I can on my BBS. Only get 1hr/day there)
2. You cannot get RealAudio or some kinds of chat through their firewall.
That is again to avoid the jam of constant downloading. The lack of RealAudio is annoying because it means I cannot listen to some archived radio shows I'd like. Probably other things I haven't been able to explore for lack of having it as well. I have been on a couple of chats so I don't really know which ones are not allowed. It's no biggy to me anyway.
3. I don't believe LAFN provides member webspace. But as you can see Eugene Freenet does.
Other than those three restrictictions, I have found LAFN to be terrific. Your price sounds a heck of a lot better than the $20/mo. fee most places charge but when it's up you may want to look into your nearest freenet.

But I do remember it included both "Them Moose Goosers" and "Them Dog Kickers". One of these was "The Mason Williams Reading Matter," a paperbook with a white cover, as I recall. I borrowed it for a time, but relenquished it after noting "Them Toad Suckers" and a lot of other such material. She very much reminded me of the woman in Gordon Lightfoot's "Susan's Floor." I played a lot of songs on hers. We have long since lost touch, but the book must exist somewhere. Several years later, I found myself distributing the wines of Tom and Dick Smothers and Pat Paulsen, all of whom I would see, from time to time. I never did meet Mason Williams, though I once knew a studio guitarist who had worked with him. |

When it wasn't, the captains and their crew tied up to wait where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now spans the river. While they waited, they refreshed themselves at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the folks living nearby, who said: "They suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence, the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone, but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze. |

Every morning someone would call the radio station (which was located 50 miles away) to request it. Living in rural Virginia, we thought it was the "dirtiest" song we'd ever heard!!! I have thought of it off and on since then but could only come up with "Frog Sucker" and I knew that wasn't right. I've been trying for several months to get the lyrics. Sitting in a meeting this morning, "Toad Sucker" hit me....I'm glad I didn't blurt it out loud!!! Now I just wish I had a recording of it!!! |

I heard it about once a week when a certain toolmaker and I worked the same shift. Being in maintenance, we all carried two-ways, and although it pissed management off somethin' fierce, it didn't deter my toolmaking friend from keyin' up and reciting Toad Suckers whenever things got quiet. Invariably, we laughed our a**es off when we heard him, his rhythm and intonation just perfect, and they never could pin it on him, exactly.
