How about Them Toad Suckers? Do you have some of the verses? Or anyone else? (I know, I know: not folk) But I get such a kick out of it! |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers From: Mountain Dog Date: 08 Apr 98 - 01:03 PM Hi, Judy I remember howling, holding my innards and laughing 'til I cried the night I heard Mason Williams recite "Them Toad Suckers" on the Smothers Brothers Comedy show in the summer of '68! He introduced it by saying: "I've never actually seen anybody do this, but it struck me as something they'd probably do down South..." (I was living in Houston, Texas at the time, very much against my will, and resentful as only a thirteen year old boy can be about such things. I still thank Mason for that gift of humor and insight that brightened an otherwise miserable year! Then, years later, I came across an Associated Press blurb in the paper that mentioned the upcoming celebration of Yellville, Arkansas' "Annual Toad Suck Parade"! I'm certain it was inspired in some fashion by Messr. Williams' poetic jibe, but I've never been able to garner further details…nor to attend the doubtlessly awesome festivities. Anyone know anything more about this fabled festival?) Regretfully, I remember only snippets of "Them Toad Suckers" and, like you, hope someone can recall the entire opus. Williams composed a wonderful corpus of "Them Poems" along the lines of "Toad Suckers", including one of my favorites, "Them Moose Goosers", which boasted such deathless lines as: "Look at them moose goosers, ain't they obtuse? Sneakin' through the woods, just a-goosin' them moose. Goosin them huge moose, goosin them tiny, goosin them little moose in they heinie. How 'bout them moose goosers?, Ain't they dumb? Some use a um-barella, some use their thumb…" If nothing else, I found a Mason Williams Homepage (see URL below) that promises to put up some or all of "Them Poems" in the near future. Judy, thanks for jogging my memory! I have a feeling today's going to be one in which "Classical Gas" will be chasing snatches of "Them Poems" all through my head… You'll find lots of info on Mason Williams, past and present, at: http://www.efn.org/~masonwms/ Best regards |
Subject: Lyr Add: THEM TOAD SUCKERS (Mason Williams) From: Bill D Date: 08 Apr 98 - 10:26 PM yep, Mountain Dog....that was one of the highlights of my TV watching career...He was introduced, and the camera focused on a totally black stage....then a lone spotlight slowly came up with Mason sitting on a tall stool..he began clapping in a slow, forceful rhythm, like a chain gang holler or something, and proceed to sing/chant... THEM TOAD SUCKERS (Mason Williams) "How about them toad suckers? Ain't they clods? Sittin' there suckin' them green toady frogs. Suckin' them hop-toads, suckin' them chunkers, Suckin them leapy types, suckin' them plunkers. Look at them toad suckers. Ain't they snappy? Suckin' them bog-frogs sure makes 'em happy. Them huggermugger toad suckers, way down south, Stickin' them sucky toads in they mouth! How to be a toad sucker? No way to duck it. Gittchyseff a toad, rare back and suck it!" ....and then the spotlight dimmed again, leaving the stage dark. On the record,(which I am looking at as I type), he has little intros to each 'them' song, with a homey explanation about each. I am sure that when I saw it on TV there was NO introduction..(perhaps he did it more than once). I remember sitting there stunned as that spotlight dimmed....The record is called "The Mason Williams Listening Matter" Everest 3265...it says he was the head writer on the Smothers Brothers show in 67-68.The record has a date of April 11, 1969 on it.... (he also sang what he called his attempt at country music on this record..."You Done Stompt on my Heart" All the 'Them' songs were short things, like Haiku...same rhythm, same length... |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers From: judy Date: 11 Apr 98 - 02:27 AM Darn! Typed a reply and it vanished into the ether. Mountain dog and Bill D, Thanks for the verses. I love the "moose goosers". What a hoot! Bill, I'd be gratefull if you have the time (and I know how that is) to type up the intros to the other verses and the verses themselves. I went to Mason Williams' site and saw he's got quite a few. He has requested people to suggest what they'd like to see on the site. I'll email him a request for all of Them Poems and post them here if I get a reply. I see he's on Eugene freenet. Yeay for freenets, you all should look into them. My connection only costs $40 per year. Or is there anyone else out there who knows some? Or any homemade verses? I just LOVE them poems!! enjoy! judy
|
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers From: Bill D Date: 11 Apr 98 - 01:42 PM Judy..most of the record is 'them' songs...*grin* thats about 30-35 minutes 'live'...at my typing speed, that would be about....oh, 8 weeks...*wink*...the easy way is to make a tape copy...you might inquire of Mason how he'd feel about that after all these years...it's easy enough for me.... |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers From: Bill D Date: 11 Apr 98 - 01:47 PM By the way...I know about freenets, but thought they were usually text only?!?!...and I gotta have my full graphic, super connection!! (I found a deal that will keep me on unlimited service with full everything till April of 2000, at $6.74/mo....yes, it helps to live in a major metropolitan area with LOTS of competition!) |
Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers From: judy Date: 11 Apr 98 - 04:38 PM For text only, Los Angeles Freenet charges something less (maybe $20/yr). They went full graphics maybe 3 years ago. The disadvantages are:
1. You get kicked off after 1 hour of use. You can immediately go back on. The idea was to let the most amount of users on without having busy signals.
I have been on extensively for the past two years (read that as 1-3hr/day) and can count on one hand the number of times I've gotten a busy signal. (Better than some mainstream ISPs I've heard of that start with A and end with L). Usually it's been when they're upgrading. It is a problem to me once in a while when I need to download a large file. But I hear Netscape is going to let you continue a download (like I can on my BBS. Only get 1hr/day there)
2. You cannot get RealAudio or some kinds of chat through their firewall.
That is again to avoid the jam of constant downloading. The lack of RealAudio is annoying because it means I cannot listen to some archived radio shows I'd like. Probably other things I haven't been able to explore for lack of having it as well. I have been on a couple of chats so I don't really know which ones are not allowed. It's no biggy to me anyway.
3. I don't believe LAFN provides member webspace. But as you can see Eugene Freenet does.
Other than those three restrictictions, I have found LAFN to be terrific. Your price sounds a heck of a lot better than the $20/mo. fee most places charge but when it's up you may want to look into your nearest freenet.
Thanks for the offer to tape (with permission). I'll check with a bunch of people around here if no one posts. |

Eatin' it later, totin' it now. Look at them lunch toters. Ain't they funny? Some use a paper sack, some use a gunny. Them food-frugal lunch toters, ain't they wise? Totin' they lunch made by they wives. How to be a lunch toter? If I may emote it, Gitchy wife to fix it. Go to work and tote it. These are two of M. Williams' "Them Poems" mutilated by my own folk process. If you are familiar with the "talkin' blues" style of Woody Guthrie and others, that is the basic musical background for these tunes. You learn one tune and you've learned them all. Oh yes, even as I speak one more comes to me. Them H'or Dourvers (sp?) How 'bout them H'or Dourvers ain't they sweet? Long time ago, Mason Williams wrote a bunch of what he called "Them Poems". Anybody familiar with these and do you know if they are available in print.

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers (Mason Williams) From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Jan 04 - 12:58 AM Who's Benjamin Williams, Garg? I closed the other thread and crosslinked to this one, because this one had already answered half the question. Didn't make sense to split the answer into two threads. As Bee-Dubya-Ell said above, information on the book is available from this site (click) - it's for sale for ten bucks from the Parallel Press of the University of Wisconsin. The "Them Poems" I posted above are identified on the Julesarts website as having been written by Mason Williams - but were they? The only "Them Poems" I've heard on recordings are the three done by the Kingston Trio on Back in Town: Also see The Mason William Webpage for a list of more "Them Poems" - but I can't tell if it's complete. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers (Mason Williams) From: GUEST,Bill The Pony Date: 07 Jan 08 - 02:35 PM I know for a fact that Mason Williams is the author of "Them Toad Suckers" because I also remember him performing it in 1968 on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, along with his brief intro about imagining it would be something folks in the south would do. And a few years later I saw the book with a number of the "Them..." ditties by Mason Williams and have regretted not purchasing it ever since. But I do remember it included both "Them Moose Goosers" and "Them Dog Kickers". BTW, I learned the 7th line of "Them Toad Suckers" as: Suckin' them bog-frogs sure make 'em happy...(vs. "bullfrogs" as noted above) |

Subject: RE: LYR REQ: Them Toad Suckers (Mason Williams) From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 08 Jan 08 - 04:27 PM Many years ago, in my 60's single life, I befriended a delightful young lady who, when she wasn't preparing my herbal tea or slaving away at macrame',collected odd books. One of these was "The Mason Williams Reading Matter," a paperbook with a white cover, as I recall. I borrowed it for a time, but relenquished it after noting "Them Toad Suckers" and a lot of other such material. She very much reminded me of the woman in Gordon Lightfoot's "Susan's Floor." I played a lot of songs on hers. We have long since lost touch, but the book must exist somewhere. Several years later, I found myself distributing the wines of Tom and Dick Smothers and Pat Paulsen, all of whom I would see, from time to time. I never did meet Mason Williams, though I once knew a studio guitarist who had worked with him. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Them Toad Suckers (Mason Williams) From: Joe_F Date: 27 Feb 09 - 09:11 PM On 3 July 1983 The New York Times reported: Token Sucking "I frankly couldn't think of anything more downright unhealthy," said Hugh A. Dunne, a special assistant to the president of the Transit Authority. Mr. Dunne was discussing token sucking. Transit and police officials said in February that a number of youths were stealing subway tokens -- sometimes dozens a day -- by sucking them from turnstile slots. The youths would either first jam the turnstiles with cardboard or simply suck out the token before the rider could go through the turnstile. The token sits on a lever in the turnstile slot until the patron goes through. Now, according to Edward J. Silberfarb, a transit police spokesman, token sucking is a "nonsituation." "It wasn't a big problem at the time and it isn't now," Mr. Silberfarb says. He says he doesn't know how many incidents have occurred recently or if any arrests have been made. "There's no token sucking squad," he says. "It's not really the kind of thing we keep separate records on. From time to time a clerk reports an incident, and if it persists we send a plainclothes patrol there." "The story caught the interest of a lot of readers," he says. "But the size of the interest doesn't always indicate the size of the problem." It seemed to me at the time that this was the stuff of a Masonic song: How about them token suckers? Ain't they the pits? Sucking them tokens To save six bits. Them foulmouthed token suckers, Prob'ly New Wave. Bet they buy mascara With the money they save. Sucking that dirty brass, Sucking it clean, Lurking in the shadows Of the turnstile machine, Hoping Mr Silberfarb will Wander thru the station, Hoping they can trap him In a nonsituation. Lookit them token suckers -- Ain't they odd? Keep an eye peeled For the token sucking squad. New York's a rotten apple, The biggest in the store: Suck a dozen tokens, And you can have the core. How to be a token sucker? Don't even try. They's nicer things to suck, and They's better ways to die. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Them Toad Suckers (Mason Williams) From: Jim Dixon Date: 01 Mar 09 - 08:22 AM Toad Suck Daze (sic) is an annual festival held at Conway, Arkansas. From the official web site:
Well, the answer is quite simple... Long ago, steamboats traveled the Arkansas River when the water was at the right depth. When it wasn't, the captains and their crew tied up to wait where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now spans the river. While they waited, they refreshed themselves at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the folks living nearby, who said: "They suck on the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence, the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone, but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze. |

You posted a request for "Them Toad Suckers" in a Mudcat Cafe thread that contained the lyics and all sorts of backgorund information on the song. We're wondering why, since we get requests like this quite often. Did you get to Mudcat by a search that showed you only part of the thread, or how is it that you got to Mudcat without seeing lyrics in the thread where you posted? I think there must be something wrong with Mudcat, because it happens so often. Could you please let me know so we can rectify the problem? (Just looked, and in this case, THIS thread in Mudcat is the third hit in Google) (I have done a search for a song, and found the first hit was my own post from 6-7 years ago!) |
