It was interesting seeing this thread just now, because I'm listening to Kate Wolf's version of a little known Guthrie song - One By One. It's a beautiful song and she does it so nicely.

It appears on the Hopper CD, and there is a great live version the band does on Roz & Howard Larman's CD of cuts from "The Folk Scene" - www.folkscene.com .

You might have heard Navajo Rug for the first time last year, but you sure didn't hear it for the "first time in at least 30 years." Ian Tyson and Tom Russell wrote Navajo Rug in 1986, about 15 years after Ian & Sylvia broke up.

Visit woodyguthrie.com to check out this year's hometown annual Woody Guthrie music festival in Okemah, OK. And if that's where you're gonna be too, the Rodeo Arena late and early is a place to wander around and get in on some authentic red dirt music, new ballads about (e.g.) the dust bowl and Mickey Mantle.

I heard Ian & Sylvia's Katy and the Navajo Rug for the first time in at least 30 years there last year.

There is a songwriters' competition and 3 stages going at a time throughout this tiny lil town on I-40 near Henryetta, Oklahoma.

One thing I've enjoyed is picking up first-run self-produced recordings from musicians who get there on a shoestring from all over the country just to be in a karmic vortex like that.

If you can't make it this year, plan for the same time next year, because this is still a pristine and virtually undiscovered happening. k

Billy Bragg and Natalie Merchant doing "ain't nobody that can sing like me" from Mermaid Avenue. Fantastic song!!! really encapsulates that young Woody I read about in the Klein biography.

Is there a webcast or a CD. I'd love to be able to hear the show down here in Georgia.

One more note...

Bill will be playing a number of Woody Guthrie songs during the program. We will hear from Woody as well as others who have recorded his songs.

Do you have a favorite recording of a Woody Guthrie song? An artist that you might feel does a good interpretation of the lyrics? Perhaps if you could share a song or two, just to help jog our memories of a great version that we may have overlooked as we prepare for the program. Thanks!

From our press release: ================ This Sunday, July 14, marks the 90th anniversary of the birth of Woody Guthrie.

WFDU-FM will celebrate the music, life and legacy of Woody Guthrie on a special edition of TRADITIONS. From 3 to 6pm Eastern Time Bill Hahn will be sharing the music of Woody Guthrie through the original recordings as well as selections from the hundreds (or is it thousands) of artists who have recorded Guthrie's songs.

In addition, Ron Olesko will present archival recordings from interviews with the late Marjorie Guthrie and Moses Asch. Marjorie, the widow of Woody Guthrie, founded the Committe to Combat Huntington's Disease as well as the Woody Guthrie Foundation. The interview with Marjorie Guthrie was originally broadcast in 1977, a precursor to the TRADITIONS program. Ron interviewed Moses Asch, the founder of Folkways Records, in 1980. Asch recalls recording Guthrie and his songs, including "This Land Is Your Land". Asch talks about how the song spread to become the an anthem.
