I used to have a link to a site that had music and lyrics that the copyright had expired on. Hey, things happen, lost the link, does anyone have a clue as to the whereabouts of this site? Jim

Hi, Jim - Click Here for a Public Domain Music site. There was another that shut down, and I think this one may be a resurrection of the older site.

What are the steps that a non-professional (I can't spell amateur-is that right? :-)I can't tell!) anyway, how does a person get a song they have written protected?

In addition to any new thoughts people have, try a forum search on this topic. Someone pointed out earlier, that a great copyright faq was at:

Hey Joe, Thanks for the address to the public domain site.sorry that it took so long to get back. Sometimes I get so busy that I don't have a second of time for six months. And Susan (from California) here is another copyright site http://www.kohnmusic.com/articles/musiclaw.html This site has the forms that you can download along with the instructions on how to fill them out. I recommend sending them in by registerd mail, that way when the copyright office receives it you get a notice back. The date that they receive it is your copyright date. After some ages pass (remember this is a gov. office), you will get a certificate (maybe not so suitable for framing) of copyright. And hey, if anyone is interested, the web page for the band that I'm in is going to disappear pretty soon as we are changing servers because our present one is doing away with their unlimited service, the address is: http://home.att.net/~jjplummer/bridgeport_volunteers.html

The PDInfo web site is no longer reachable at the ne1.bright.net URL. It can still be reached at

http://www.bright.net/~pdfino/pdm2index.html

Other copyright-related sites you might find interesting are

http://www.public.asu.edu/~dkarjala http://www.ncte.org/cccc/cccc-ip/ http://www.elca.org/afp/house/copyrit.html http://www.cni.org/Hforums/cni-copyright

The intended formatting in my previous post seems to have been garbled. Here are those last four sites again:

"Opposing Copyright Extension" http://www.public.asu.edu/~dkarjala

CCCC-IP: http://www.ncte.org/cccc/cccc-ip

Lutheran copyright page: http://www.elca.org/afp/house/copyrit.html

That Public Domain site link I posted doesn't seem to work any more. Anybody got a new URL, or know of other sites that give information about public domain music?

Joe: My post of 2 August had the address, but with a typo in it. Here is the address again, with the typo corrected: PDInfo is reachable at http://www.bright.net/~pdinfo/pdm2index.html
