I have the tab for Turning Away, anyone wants it e-mail me at gbm1@talktalk.net
It's played in standard tuning with capo on fret 2.It's very simple to play as it consists of 3 chords only and they are all the same shape moved around between frets 3, 5 and 7.Clinton's chords above are correct and they are the ONLY chords used in this song.

From what I can gather from the video:

All the chords are two tone power chords with the bottom strings ringing free, capo 2nd fret:

(Chords as if without capo)

Chorus - E, C, D, E, D, C
Verses - E, D, C, D, E

(I add in a minor on the chord sometimes for effect)

I once went to a guitar workshop at his perthshire Amber festival, and it seems quite a lot of his songs are in an open C tuning, as guest has suggested.

The lyrics to TURNING AWAY have been posted here, in the thread Origins: Turning Away - What does it mean? and chords from the Dougie Maclean songbook are posted in this thread: Chords Req: Turning Away (Dougie MacLean).

He also uses CGCGCE tunings quite a bit. I suspect Caledonia and Turning Away are being played with those tunings.

Try DADGAD tuning (Low to High). It works for me with simple fingering. After seeing Dougie in concert this year I'm fairly certain he plays very little in standard tuning.
After tuning in DADGAD use the following fingers to play the chords:
D= fret the 3rd string (G) on the second fret - I use my middle finger
C= fret the 5th string (A) on the third fret - I use my ring finger
Em= fret the 5th string (A) on the first fret - I use my first finger
This sounds good both fingerpicked or strummed.

DADGAD can be tricky but with some experimenting you can find a lot of nice embellishments. Give it a try. Oh, I capo on the 4th fret but that's only to get it into a key I can sing it in. Second fret sounds right to me.

Mashkiova, he's got the capo on 2nd fret, which makes Em chord into.........F#min!

Clinton, aren't your chords actually Em, D and C in descending order?
Sorry to nitpick........... lol

I've been trying to figure this song out on the mandolin, and it's just not working. I've tried using Em, C, and D, but from what I can tell in this YouTube video, he sings it in the key of F# minor, which doesn't make sense with those chords.

Here's the video:
Turning Away - Dougie MacLean with Kathy Mattea

Is the version you all are referring to in a different key?

Heh... MY chords...

In all actuality, I probably stole 'em from video-tape of him playing the song that way...

I've seen him play it live and he plays Clinton's chords all the way through, but two frets up (capo'd at the 2nd fret). It gives a nice drone feel with the open strings.

Look at Dougie's website http://www.dunkeld.co.uk where you can obtain the Interactive Songbook Volume 1. It's a CD-ROM and has not only the lyrics and chord charts (in the correct tunings) of ten of Dougie's songs (including Caledonia and Turning away) but also video footage of Dougie demonstrating the fingering and chord techniques. Even I managed to get the intro to Caledonia, so it must be good!

It's about twenty quid and a bargain at that. JB

For the last verse and chorus I use "Power Chords"

Em as 079900

C as 057700

D as 035500

Gives it a little extra punch, and more ring...

And for the record, you can find Dougie MacLean lyrics at http://www.dougiemaclean.com/albums/lyrics1.htm. Don't think the site has any chords, however.
Good stuff.

Mikey Joe, that's precisely what the good man posts in his music book, but I, like you, suspect there's a secret ingredient in there, but sadly, I can't work it out, either!

Great song, though.
