If anyone has any lyrics to any songs by the Carter Family that are out of the usual popular variety please send them my way. I absolutely olve the Carter Family, and I perform their music on stage. Matter of fact, I pick the guitar in the "Carter Scratch" fashion. Help me keep the music alive in my area. I am the only person that does their music here. Thanks.

Hi, John - did you know about the 18 Carter Family songs we have listed in the database? Just enter [Carter Family} in the search box in the upper-right corner of this page, and they'll appear. Actually, we probably have more, but the 18 are the ones marked as Carter Family songs. I think you might have better luck with other songs if you post the titles of the songs you'd like to find. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the tip. I have searched this entire database for various Carter Family songs. Many just do not appear. I have learned just about every one on the database. Am looking for the lesser known songs now. They are just as powerful as the more popular ones. Thanks for your help.

John......]

Here's a list of the Carter lyrics I have in my computer. I'm working on transcribing others but there's so little time.

If you're looking for something slightly off the beaten track (and there aren't many), you might try Stern Old Bachelor. Three others I like a lot, just a little different, are Cowboy Jack, Jealous Hearted Me and Sweet Fern.

Let me know if you'd like any of these (it'll be a long time before I can send them in for the database. You can b/c me at: rsbassoc@neca.com

Anchored In Love (The Tempest Is O'er)
Buddies In The Saddle
Bury Me Under The Weeping Willow
Cowboy Jack
Homestead On The Farm
I'll Be All Smiles Tonight
Jealous Hearted Me
Keep On The Sunny Side

Subject: Lyr Add: THE LOVER'S RETURN^^, CURTAINS OF NIGHT^^
From: Barbara Shaw
Date: 16 Jun 98 - 12:41 PM

Here are a couple that I have. One is attributed to AP Carter, and the other was performed by the Carter Family.

The Lover's Return
A.P. Carter

G D7
And so you have come back to me
G
And say the old love's growing yet
C G
You've tried through all these weary years
D7 G
You've tried too vainly to forget.

(Chorus)
Oh no, I cannot take your hand
God never gives us back our youth
The loving heart you slighted then
Was yours, my friend, in perfect truth.
Come close and let me see your face
Your raven hair is tinged with snow
Oh yes, it is the same dear face
I loved so many years ago.

Farewell, I think I love you yet
As friend to friend, God bless you dear
And guide you through these weary years
To where the skies are always clear.

Curtains of Night
Will S. Hays (Performed by the Carter Family)

A
When the curtains of night
D A
Are pinned back by the stars
E
And the beautiful moon climbs the sky
A A7 D A
And the dewdrops of heaven are kissing the rose
E A
It is then that my memories fly.

As if on the wings of a beautiful dove
In haste with the message it bears
To bring you a kiss of affection and say
I'll remember you love in my prayers.

(Chorus)
A D A
Go wherever you will over land, over sea
E
I will share all your sorrow and care
A A7
And at night when I kneel
D A
By my bedside and pray
E A
I'll remember you love, in my prayer.

I have loved you too fondly to ever forget
The words you have spoken to me
With a kiss of affection still warm on my lips
When you told me how true you would be.

I know not if fortune be fickle or friend
Or if time on your memory wears
I know that I love you wherever you roam
And remember you, love, in my prayers.

When angels in heaven are guarding the good
As God has ordained them to do
In answer to prayers I have offered to Him
I know there is one watching you.

And may its bright spirit go with you through life
To guide you up heaven’s bright stairs
To meet with the one who has loved you so true
And remembered you, love, in her prayers.

More later.

Subject: Lyr Add: FOGGY MOUNTAIN TOP (Carter)
From: willie
Date: 17 Jun 98 - 12:37 AM

FOGGY MOUNTAIN TOP

CHORUS: If I was on some foggy mountaintop,
I'd sail away to the west.
I'd sail all around this whole wide world
To the one I love the best.

She caused me to weep. She caused me to mourn.
She caused me to leave my home.
Oh, these lonesome pines and these good old times!
I'm on my way back home.

If I'd listened to what my mama said,
I would not have been here today:
Lying around this old jailhouse,
Just a-weepin' my sweet life away.

Oh, when you go a-courtin',
I'll tell you what to do:
Take off that long-tailed roustabout;
Put on your navy blues.

Changed from all caps. --JoeClone, 10-Mar-03.

From: dulcimer

GOD GAVE NOAH THE RAINBOW SIGN

1. I got a home in that rock, don't you see?
I got a home in that rock, don't you see?
I got a home in that rock,
Just beyond the mountaintop.
Hide me, ol' Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

2. God gave Noah the rainbow sign, don't you see?
God gave Noah the rainbow sign, don't you see?
God gave Noah the rainbow sign,
No more water, but fire next time.
Hide me, ol' Rock of Ages, cleft for me.

3. Poor ol' Lazarus, poor as I, don't you see?
Poor...
Poor ol' Lazarus, poor as I,
When he died he had a home on high.
Hide me...

4. East and west the fire will roll, hide by me.
East...
East and west the first will roll,
How will it be with my first soul?
Hide me...

5. When this world's all on fire, hide by me.
When...
When this world's all on fire,
Let thy bosom be my pillow.
Hide me...

Recorded in 1929; source has not been firmly established but may have come from an old hymnbook (according to Sara).

John, I posted the lyrics to "No Telephone in Heaven" in another thread. I can't get the forum search to respond at the moment, but you can try searching for "telephone" or "heaven" in the subject.

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: ON THE SEA OF GALILEE (Carter)
From: Barbara Shaw
Date: 04 Aug 98 - 09:14 PM

And here's another from that same album that I particularly like, although I'm really guessing on some of the lyrics:

ON THE SEA OF GALILEE
The Carter Family

     E A
Am I a soldier of the cross
E B7
A follower of the lamb
E A
And shall I fear to know his ghost
E B7 E
And blush to seek his name.

(Chorus)
A E
On the sea (the sea, the sea) of Galilee
B7 E
My Jesus is walking on the sea
A E
On the sea (the sea, the sea) of Galilee
B7 E
My Jesus is walking on the sea.

Should I declare it to the skies
On flowery bits of ease
While others fawn to win the prize
And sail to bloody seas.

Joe, interesting.

It turns out that the song "Am I a Soldier of the Cross" is in several of my songbooks. However, it's a completely different melody from what the Carters do on that album "Gospel Songs by The Carter Family in Texas, Volume 3" and the refrain about "on the sea of Galilee" is completely absent on your song.

Maybe AP used some of the lyrics and made it his own song?

Hi, Guest. Some people say that 'My little girl' is also "Little Darling Pal of Mine."

You can hear that on YouTube. Copy and paste this URL to hear it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1qz3CW5GE4

If that's it, searcn on google for Little Darling Pal of Mine lyrics. It may be here on the Mudcat. Look for the box in the upper right of this page.

For future reference, it is better to start a new thread for a new song. And please don't use block capital letters. They are hard to read.

There are actually several threads about the song LITTLE DARLING PAL OF MINE, plus a version in the DT. To see them, I suggest you start here and then follow the links at the top of the page to find the others.

But I'm puzzled by this request. LITTLE DARLING PAL OF MINE doesn't even contain the phrase "my little girl." By "Carter and Carter" I assume our guest means Sara & Maybelle Carter. A couple of albums exist of them alone; however, I don't see any title that resembles "my little girl."

There are lots of songs called MY LITTLE GIRL but I'm not finding any that were written or recorded by anyone named Carter.
