Subject: RE: wahts your favourite KAte rusby song9 From: MurkeyChris Date: 02 Nov 04 - 08:05 PM I think she's fantastic, but do agree that she needs to start playing with the formula now. Her most varied album was probably debut Hourglass which featured her sparse version of 'I am stretched on your grave'. Creepy brilliance! Chris |
Subject: RE: what's your favourite Kate Rusby song9 From: Chris/Darwin Date: 03 Nov 04 - 07:09 AM Kate's good, no doubt. At her best, she is up there with the very best. My favourite song is one of hers - Let the Cold Wind Blow, which does it for me every time. But there are many other good ones. Her versions of many trad songs are a little bland for me at times, but then, there are very few albums I know where every song is a humdinger. Regards Chris |

My favourite is Merry Green broom, and also The wild goose. Kate has such a beautiful voice!!! =) |
Subject: RE: wahts your favourite KAte rusby song9 From: Mo the caller Date: 18 Dec 11 - 04:54 AM I've not read through all the thread but heard her sing "While Shepherds" to the Ilkley Moor tune and I thought it sounded very thin without the other singers echoing the chorus. I think it was on Radio Shetland there was some really good stuff on with it including a track from Albireo (not sure if the Listen Again still works) |

Subject: RE: wahts your favourite KAte rusby song9 From: GUEST Date: 24 Jan 12 - 10:27 AM To those that dislike her: If any of the X Factor/Kareoke TV wannabe "acts" had an ounce of Kate's talent, then they would deserve some their unfounded attention. What's wrong with liking someone who's truly talented, has their own family based record label, and appears to be a nice person? So what if some songs are similar? It's called having a style! But it's your choice as to what you like. Last year, the wife and I travelled from Nova Scotia to Montreal to see her show (rare Canadian appearance). Only a slight disappointment that she didn't have the full band. If we could see her more often I definately would. By the way, "Drowned Lovers" (live version) is great. And "Who Will Sing me Lullabies" and "Falling" are top notch as well. |
Subject: RE: wahts your favourite KAte rusby song9 From: GUEST,A Yank Date: 29 Mar 12 - 08:00 AM First impressions from listening to Hourglass: Nice voice. But it seems lacking in emotion and kind of bland. And what the instruments are doing meshes poorly with the vocal melodies, which she tends to flatten out and blandify (as another poster pointed out). Compare her version of "Lowlands of Holland" with the versions by Martin Carthy or Steeleye Span. In those versions, what the instruments are doing meshes well with the vocal melody, unlike in the KR version where they actually clash at times. And the vocalists sing with great feeling, which makes sense since its about someone's inconsolable grief at the loss of her love. KR by contrast sounds like she's on valium. Maybe she'll grow on me. But thats my first impression |
