Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD: This Machine Kills Fascists From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jul 07 - 10:17 PM I've been hiding out from the heat today, watching this DVD. Ron is right that it's long - 2 hours and 40 minutes - but I'm enjoying it. It's available from Amazon.mudcat.org for eighteen bucks, and well worth it. And yes, there's now DVD playable in the U.S. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 18 Aug 05 - 09:09 AM That link that Banjo Ray is for European orders, not for the U.S. Check with the other sites I've mentioned if you live here in the states. |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: Snuffy Date: 18 Aug 05 - 09:03 AM Back in the late 60s we were told that: the US standard NTSC stood for Never Twice the Same Colour the French SECAM stood for Strategic Exercise Counter-AMerican the European PAL stood for Pure And Lifelike |

Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 17 Aug 05 - 11:36 PM It is available here in the U.S. at many record stores, I've seen it at Tower and Sam Goody's. I am sure Amazon or Barnes and Noble will carry it along with other outlets. PAL is a broadcast standard, used in most of Europe and other parts of the globe. Here in the United States we use NTSC. There are a few other standards such as PAL-M and SECAM. If you purchase a PAL DVD or PAL VHS, it won't play in a U.S. deck, unless you have a multi-standard. One trick, PAL DVD's will play in most computers. |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: Tannywheeler Date: 17 Aug 05 - 07:18 PM Thanks for the intelligent follow-up, Mr. Olesko. We should check with the WG Archive folks--they could probably tell us where to get it. What's PAL? Tw |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 17 Aug 05 - 02:56 PM I watched the DVD last night. My big gripe was that it could easily have been trimmed by about 1 hour! On many occasions the director would have two different guests repeating the same information, or there would be extraneous information given that did nothing to futher the story. Aside from that, it was a very interesting documentary - especially if you are a Woody fan. Because the documentary covered his entire life, you can really see the enormity of his life and variety of experiences. The film covers warts and all and does not paint him to be a saint, but it does illustrate his impact on society and culture. Pete Seeger was brilliant, as was Nora Guthrie. One other "gripe", I wish the WG Archives gave the filmakers access to the home movies of Woody at Greystone. These films have only been shown to the public a handful of times, but the impact is enormous. To see Woody sitting on the lawn at Greystone, unable to control his body movements, and watching his children surround him tells so much - about what he went through in those final years and the incredible love he shared with his family. If they included that footage I think the impact would have been enormous. I do know that Marjorie was very protective of those private films, but Nora seemed to see value in sharing it with others. Please don't take my comments out of context, I highly recommend this DVD. Even if you think you know Woody's story, you will walk away with a deeper perspective. |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: Rain Dog Date: 19 Jul 05 - 10:49 AM I think it will be released later in the US - August 2nd according to a well known retailer etc etc etc |
Subject: RE: Woody Guthrie DVD From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 19 Jul 05 - 10:37 AM A word of caution - this is a PAL release. I don't think an NTSC copy has been released in the U.S. People will be disapointed when the DVD won't play in North America. |
