I get spam email all the time, purportedly emanating from people with very unlikely names...obviously made-up. It makes it quicker to identify spam and delete it, so I don't mind. Here's the best one yet today:

Barbara and I each have our own e-mail address and we have a joint one. Mine starts out with my name, "donfirth@" and then goes from there. What I don't quite understand is that I get spam addressed to "donf—" and just about any and every possible combination of letters from there on.

I'll sometimes get eight or ten at once, different variations of the address, but the body of the message is all the same. Ersatz Rolex watches (my Casio digital with five alarms, a stop-watch, and a countdown timer gains about two seconds a week and I reset it every week to Greenwich Mean Time, and that's good enough for me), or wanting us to ru-up our mortgage, (which we don't have because it was paid off years ago), and for cut-rate drugs and pharmaceuticals from some undisclosed foreign country, no doctors' prescriptions necessary (yeah, right!!). I have a spam blocker that stops the vast majority (sometimes hundreds per day!), but these come in in the "Suspect Email" folder. And the same damned ones come in day after day.

Advertising may come to us through snail-mail addressed to "Occupant," but at least they have to get the street address right.

Barbara and I both get this stuff on all three of our e-mail addresses, when the address at the top of the spam is only approximate, and not even a close approximate at that. If it isn't addressed to us specifically, why the hell are we getting it?

I emailed my ISP about the getting of mail with those characteristics - ie not my name, but the start of my name, and they said that a) The mail was actually sent to a long list of names but the others, including mine, were hidden; and b) They couldn't stop it.

I was thinking about this the other day when I noticed that not the names, but the
SUBJECT LINE words have gotten more strange.
It really jumped out at me when I saw one spam email with

LH & GF. Ephedra bush grows all over the Western US. I have several tufts growing within thirty feet of my house. When the Mormons came west they used to brew something called Mormon Tea. Having forsaken the evil stimulants "tea" and "coffee" they used the ephedra plant as an alternative. Ephedrine, the extract of the active ingredient is used to produce methamphedamine, "crystal" etc. Yup, sure beats that nasty ol' caffine.

LH: Those made up names are made up by a computer program. A spammer is too lazy to do that much work.

I could tell you how to avoid spam completely but I like to keep that to myself. I have recieved 2 spams in the last year.

Sandra in Sydney, Fifth Third Bank is headquartered in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. I always thought the name odd too, and inquie=red about it when I attended a function in the area. Apparently Fifth National and Third National banks merged and neither wanted to lose their identity, hence the name.

I had thought maybe it was the fifth instance of a third national bank or the like. In recent years, Fifth Third has gone on a buying spree and is now one of the nation's largest banks. As a matter of fact, I'm now a customer of theirs even though I'm still using checks with a bank name from two purchases back.

I assume you got one of the phishing emails purportedly from them in the past few days. It gave me pause for about ten seconds until I decided they could send me snail mail if they really wanted that info and I sent it the way of the rest of the junk mail.

Kazimiera's website went by the wonderful name of "Tuihadefungase": Sounds rather nasty to me. If I was suffering from THAT, I think I would need all her pharmacy products and more besides.

Over the past few years we've had zillions of mergers, cos the Govt deregulated the financial industry. I spent hours detectiving & fixing the old & new entries in our Customer DB when I heard that another small regional bank had been swallowed by a big one, & another big one was chaging it's name - again! So I gave up & waited for them to contact us.

I sort of "collect" interesting subject line "poetry" -- and my favorite spammer name has been Claudius Banks (mentioned above by Curmudgeon).

I mostly get spam at my work address and I'm sure I can collect some more interesting names (even if not interesting in a musical sense) in the next coupla days.

My primary email IP address does a pretty good job of siphoning off spam before it gets to me, as does the "Bulk Mail" folder (which I never look at) at my Yahoo address.

Aah hev te look in me Yahoo Bulk mail for these and it seems that some bugger has got wise - Aah've only had five 'sillies' in the last three days - The others are aall fairly sensible names or are names at e-mail addresses

I don't have time or patience to look at 'em long enough to attribute characteristics to these nutters, be they real or computer generated. I just call up my Yahoo Bulk folder and delete the B'stards - if you'll pardon the expression.

The majority of ones I get are so garbled that the "from" line doesn't even form anything resembling a name.

I have noticed, however, that virtually all of them come from .ca addresses.

My most persistent one appears to pretend to be (possibly) female, but the subject and addy lines are all in French (maybe?) so that I can't read enough of them to make sense. Something (possibly?) about sex and mutual funds, or meds to make my funds grow, as best I can tell. I've tried blocking the source site that's indicated, but it seems to change about every two weeks, and I've been getting "almost identical" crap, all apparently from the same source, for over 6 months now. All from .ca of course.

Probably just a fan ... . I hope "she" gets over me soon.

This is a list of made up names, but they belong to real people. I found them in the birthday list in the local paper over a period of months. They would do for spam names though.

When you fight spammers, you might as well fight a coke machine. They have no soul or morals or consideration. They are like Mafia hit men.

They have programs that create all these names. The garbled up stuff is the results of a program designed to write spam that slips through the spam filters. There is not 100% effective spam filter and if there was, it would be compromised in a few days.

Spammers have programs that scan the internet for open mail servers that will relay thier spam and hide the origin of the spam. When a mail server is set up, it defaults to open relay. In China and third world countries. thay simply don't know and don't care how the mail servers are setup. This facilitaies the spam.

The only thing you can do about spam is to avoid letting the spammers get your address. Do not post it on the net and do not use it to contact anybody but friends. Use a free Yahoo or Hotmail account for dealing with anybody other than your friends.

I do it and I have not received any spam since Sep 9th.
