The Lincolnshire Wedding Song - I'll post rest of the words (as refered to by Old Git) when I get home from work

Some people think its jolly for to lead the single life
But I believe in marriage and the comforts of a wife
For a wifes the greatest blessing if shes honest good and true
So if you want to marry lads I'll tell you what to do

Get a little table and a little chair
Get a tiny house in a tiny square
Get a little wife and then a little tin
And don't forget the cradle for to rock the baby in

Well, what a lot of ideas, and some of them are VERY good. Thank you everyone.

Guess it's time for me to do a bit of research and start listening to them so that I can make up my mind and start learning the appropriate songs.

Thanks again.

Cheers

P.S. Sorry it's not from Lincolnshire, but it IS from a spot a mere 200 miles from Lincoln, Nebraska.

I suggest adding a little percussion to the piece to give it a Renaissance-dance flavo(u)r.

The world needs a wedding-entrance folk song, so I just wrote one while lying in the bath.

To the tune of "All Creatures of our God and King" (Lasst uns erfreuen.)

Come, friends, the wedding day is here.
Come, friends, with prayer and loving cheer
Join together, Join together!
Come kith* and kin, you're welcome here.
Come friends and family, far and near
Fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers
Bless these new ones! Bless their union!
Join together!

(PM'd to kampervan)

*kith = familiar friends, neighbors., fellow countrymen or acquaintances

I think Nick Drake's "Northern Sky" is very beautiful and romantic, albeit not technically a "folk" song; maybe *I'll* use it, if I ever get married (again)!

Plenty of good suggestions here.

Especially for couples who are not really young, and have maybe been around once already -

"Sometimes When I Get to Thinking," By Buffy St. Marie

"No Telling," by Linda Thompson, turned into a cowboy song by Tom Russell.

Neither of them are folk songs by most peoples' definition, of course.

Peter.

Find out from her how old a song has to be before it counts as a folk song, we all have our own definitions and some of these suggestions aren't traditional.

'Get a little table'is certainly cheerful.
Is your neice o womans libber? She might think twice about the verse that goes something like..
A married man has comforts that a single man has not
His clothes are alway mended and his dinner's always hot.

Outward Bound by Tom Paxton expresses all the joy and trepidation of setting forth on a new life/love, and that it's up to the people concerned to make the good things happen.
Possibly Tom Paxton's family roots go back to Lincolnshire?

Laurie Lewis' "Love Chooses You" off of the CD of the same name or the "Earth & Sky" CD.

Ralph McTell's "Pity The Boy" off the album "Streets" would do nicely, as well.

I don't know if they will bring Lincolnshire to mind, but they'll bring other good thoughts.

("Red Haired Mary", "Katherine Jaffray" "Give Me Back My Five Dollars" and the like can wait til folks have had a few at the reception).

Ah yes.....Starting a new life together and you need something appropriate that speaks to your future, your hopes and dreams, and what you can make of it ...................hmmmm............I'd suggest "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" done slowly and with feeling. Either that or "Darktown Strutter's Ball".......Your choice.

'Searching for Lambs' is stunning and I have sung it at many weddings, including one in Canada that we couldn't be at!. So, some of us recorded it and sent it over and at the exact time it was being played in Canada some of us were at WHFF and sang it for them at the same time. It's on the lyrics bit.

It partially depends on what qualifies as "a folk song" (but let's not get that argument started!) for your purposes.

Kisses Sweeter Than Wine might do.

I don't suppose you'd want to sing The Man Who Wrote The "Home Sweet Home" Never Was a Married Man!

Hi there everyone

Help please.

My niece, who is getting married in New Zealand wants a couple of us, who will be going over there for the ceremony,to sing a folk song as she enters.

It's an outdoor civil ceremony, and she would like something to remind her of her roots and which is cheerful and ideally originates from Lincolnshire.

So, not much of a challenge then.

Can anyone help? All suggestions gratefully considered.

Thanks very much

Kampervan
