Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: GUEST,lox Date: 03 Mar 07 - 07:28 PM Just see this thread and been reminded - ... must remember to stock up tomorrow ..... (!!!) You think I'm joking? |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: Dave Roberts Date: 03 Mar 07 - 01:11 PM I have now been back to Morrisons in Winsford, and the price is indeed £2.49 ('While stocks last'). I don't know why I thought it was more expensive. Meanwhile I have now bought some Birds Eye frozen soya beans. The TV ads for these have me most intrigued. They look like elongated garden peas or, alternatively, like bright green baked beans. I can't wait to find out what they taste like. |

Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: MartinRyan Date: 02 Mar 07 - 05:02 PM When I was a kid, there was a spread called GYE - Guinness Yeast Extract. I think they made it themselves - or possibly contracted it out . I'm talking early 1950's here. Eventually it was discontinued. Sounds like its time has come again! Regards |

Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: Dave Roberts Date: 02 Mar 07 - 02:13 PM But, folks, it's so good for you. All that yeast and stuff. I'll admit that the first time you try Marmite it tastes like s**t, but you must persevere. If you close your eyes and think of England (or Uncle Sam for our American cousins)it's possible to imagine (on a good day, and with a following wind) that Marmite tastes a bit like beef extract. The secret, as the manufacturers will tell you, is to spread it very thinly on toast. If you take in too much too soon you'll regret it. Oh yes. |

Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: Dave Roberts Date: 02 Mar 07 - 09:12 AM I note, looking at the 'Which' report that the rrp is only £2.49. I'm sure I paid more that that. Reckon I was done... |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: Dave Roberts Date: 02 Mar 07 - 09:09 AM I've tried it. It was on special offer at Morrisons in Winsford last week (still over £3 though). It tastes very much like ordinary Marmite. Perhaps a little more 'bitter', which I suppose you might expect. |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: GUEST,Cats Date: 02 Mar 07 - 08:41 AM I haven't seen it yet in the shops down here but I'll keep looking. Marmite always used to be made from the remains of the brewing which is why it was next to the Bass brewery in Burton on Trent for many years [don't know if it still is, haven't been there for ages]. You can get guiness marmite on britsuperstore website which will post various foods anywhere in the world. |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: Jean(eanjay) Date: 02 Mar 07 - 08:35 AM I haven't heard of it until now but I like both guinness and marmite so if I can find it I'll give it a go and let you know. |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 02 Mar 07 - 08:34 AM Oz already has Promite, which is less salty. Then there is the Dick Smith one too... |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: JennyO Date: 02 Mar 07 - 08:01 AM Hmm! I'm a happy little Vege-mite from way back, but I'm also a Guinness lover, so in spite of the fact that it's Marmite, this idea has a lot of appeal. I wonder if they will try it out in Oz? Just bring it on - I'll be happy to do a taste test! |
Subject: RE: BS: guiness marmite From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Mar 07 - 07:46 AM Spaw, are you giving up Vegemite? Or just offering to do a taste test? Which? reports & campaigns |
