Rudolph the Reindeer was tragically killed when he ran into a traffic light at a Santa Claus Parade in Richmond, Virginia. Thousands of horrified children saw Rudolph slowly expire before their very eyes.

My cousin's wife recently posted a facebook meme saying that biologically, Santa's reindeer must all be female. The males have shed their antlers by November but the Females wait until spring. Christmas is not like it was.

Looks more like just a case of bad planning to me. I heard that a Great Root Bear perished in just this way in South Dakota a few years ago. Then there was the Ronald McDonald that went down in a drive-by shooting in Sacramento, and the giant inflatable Labatt's 50 Beer Can that got nailed by the Human Cannonball act at a country Fall Fair in London, Ontario. We need to establish better safety standards to protect our inflatable friends.

The reindeer who pull Santa's sleigh look nothing at all like the spike white-tail deer in the parade. Reindeer males (reindeer are domesticated caribou) lose their antlers throughout December and early January, females in the summer.

Shucks, I wouldn't waste powder or an arrow on that little bitty critter that was offed by the stoplight. If it WAS full grown it's genetically recessive, as it would have no antlers to speak of with which to engage other males and perpetuate its genes.

I've heard other stories about Santa's origin. I've heard that he was originally from Germany.

This is quite clear from the names of some of the reindeer. Donner and Blitzen, for example, mean Thunder and Lightning in German.

Unfortunately, Santa's Germanic origin has been denied by the English-speaking world ever since relations with the Germans took a nosedive in 1914. And that's not all! People in England were actually doing idiotic things like attacking Dachshunds after war broke out with Germany. Perfectly innocent little dogs were being abused in the streets of Londons by morons who couldn't think past their first kneejerk reaction to common national symbols.

It was tragic! But I digress...

Now, I have also heard that Santa Clauses are actually a separate species, a rare and very fierce primate that is found only in the remote wilderness of Lappland. Their proper name is...the Father Christmas

I wanna get back to the original topic of this thread - the supposed death of Rudolf.

It never ceases to amaze me that sometimes we love the logical and analytical. We watch I-don't-know-how-many versions of CSI. We read mysteries. There's even a play about Sherlock Holmes on in my town.

Yet let some malicious tabloid (The Daily Mail, Little Hawk!) start a rumor, and we believe every word. But let's consider the canon.

"When what to my wondering eyes should appear
but a miniature sleigh and 8 tiny reindeer."

Does that thing in the photos look like a TINY reindeer? No way! It's an obvious fake.

And then:

Rudolf, the red-nosed reindeer, had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw it, you would even say, "It glows!"

Does that phantasm in the photo have a nose that glows? No, it does not. Its nose is some kind of polyplastic with a matte finish.

If we're going to adulate puzzlesolvers, let's do it all the time.

Rap, Rudolf's nose can glow without being radioactive. It's just a form of natural variation. I, for one, have oily skin, and I had a shiny nose myself for many years.

Speaking of reindeer, when I was a little kid, I was baffled by this song:

Canadians have known about the lollipop cure for years. Look at Shatner.

Leena is right about the nose just being shiny and not having an internal light source. That is why Santa's Sleigh is constantly monitored for safety while in Canadian airspace and is required to have proper, functioning running lights and landing lights in accordance with Ministry of Transport air safety regulations.

Such erroneous claims in the song also lead to Mr Gene Autry not being able to perform in front of Canadian children without a scientist to explain these errors and the song and cartoon were never aired in Canada without a disclaimer about the danger of aircraft without proper running and landing lights.

Oddly enough, hockey playing racoons were considered perfectly OK for children. But that is for another thread.

Lappland? That is a simply a tourist business with actors. I am talkin bout the REAL Sandy Clause. I saw his cabin and saw him splittin firewood. He was stripped to the waist... just black CAF grunt issue boots (he was an F-101 Voodoo pilot - go figure, eh? - at CFB Chatham, NB and later flew choppers when they got rid of the Voodoos),red checked pants held up by suspenders and that silly hat. When he spotted us, he ran for his cabin and Dale floored it and made a cloud of dust! He then jammed the truck as far in the woods as he could and just in the Nicholas of time. Sandy cracked a few 303's down the road into the dust but we were out out the line of fire.

When I worked in a fabric store, I tried to convince customers that Santa costumes did not have to look exactly like the Santa in the Coke ads, but I was wasting my breath. They wanted the red jacket, the red pants, the black belt, the white trim...

Maybe there are regulations for Santa's suit, just as there are for his sleigh. If so, Santa was in mufti the day you saw him.

This is true: One day I read a book about the folkore of today's children. This gist was that today's (American) children feel affection for the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny, even though most of them know they are not real. But they are intimidated by Santa. Santa is too big, too male, too hairy and has too much power.

leeneia... I kinda hate to be the one break this to you but, Sandy's a bear of a man, so to speak. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's not like he's a pedophile, eh? I've heard rumours about Candy Claus too and it seems kinda suspicious s/he only came on the scene in 1849 and that was only in a book in which the odd couple, er, ahhh, oLd couple were not the Claus' but relatives in disguise.

Few people know Sandy was in the RCAF and trained at Camp X or that he packs a Sten and munitions on The Eve. This here Kringle (spelling?) guy is first on the list. He's been VERY naugthy.
