In 1823 HOME SWEET HOME was written by John Howard Paine and the music was written by Sir Henry R Bishop. This tune was the closing tune at all barn dances in West Virginia until 1867 when GOOD NIGHT LADIES was written. I don't have the artist. Then the closing tune at the dances was HOME SWEET HOME followed by GOOD NIGHT LADIES. In 1926 Irving King wrote SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME. It appears that they wrote both lyrics and melody in this case, though ... The song was written on a train journey from London where both James Campbell and Reginald Connelly were travelling. They were tired from the trip and had a few drinks during the journey, hence the lyrics. It appears that the song was pretty popular straightaway. It was recorded by Ella Sheilds(1879-1952) and by Wendell Hall(1886-1969), for the Brunswick label, in 1925, the year of its publication. |

I have never, ever heard the funny variations on the song. We used to have a funny plastic ashtray with a comical man hanging on to a lamp post, looking very inebriated. I think the caption on it was Show Me the Way to Go Home. I remember that we used to sing the song when we saw it. Bradley The discovery of this sheet provides proof to contradict the popular notion that this song was written by a British song writing team. Toohey and Bradley were actually musicians, who lived, performed and composed here in our city of Winnipeg. For decades, Margaret Toohey actually ran a music shop, The Music Exchange, in direct competition to Tredwell's.....closing her doors in 1965. The fact that the lyrics to our version are quite tame in comparison to the more commonly sung, bawdy version, lends credence to the notion that the Brits simply changed a few lyrics and called the song their own. The mystery lies in the fact that nobody in Winnipeg knows the ties of Toohey and Bradley to this song. It begs the question: "In light of the huge international success of this song, why didn't Toohey and Bradley contest their ownership through public disclosure and/or lawsuit?" This album has never had a digital re-issue and is not very well known these days. Their version has the 'No matter where I roam' lines but not the 'I'm tired and I want to go to bed' section. And they credit I. King (as above) as the writer. I've never heard this version anywhere else (but I have recorded it myself). Anyone know of this version? And I can't find any reference to them anywhere else. So I'm wondering if anybody has heard these lyrics anywhere other than through Noel Harrison or The Clancy Brothers. Are they original lyrics written by the two songwriters? Or is it a music hall addition? Or did Noel Harrison write them himself (although he gives credit to Irving King--the psuedonym for the two songwriters who wrote the song)? |
