Thanks Night Owl. I'm pretty sure it is Dixie Queen- at least that's what I hear. I sang the song 15 or so years ago with an oldtime string band. Our lead guy was pretty hip to Carter stuff and he gave it to us as 'DixieQueen'. I'll look forward to your next reply. My name is Michael, and my partner Cathryn and I are the duo of 'Just Plain Folk'. We live in Stanwood,Wa. a small town on Puget Sound. Later and thanks again!!

Here is how my son and I sing it sometimes!!!
DIXIE DARLIN'

My dixie darling, listen to the song I sing
Beneath the silver moon, with the banjo right in tune
My heart is ever true, I love no one but you
my dixie darling, my dixie queen

Way down below the mason dixon line
Down where the honeysuckle are entwined
There's where the southern breezes blowin, there's where the daisies growin
The girls from the north in their gay finery whirlin around society
Singing a song of Dixie darling where I long to be

My dixie darlin listen to the song I sing
Beneaththe silver moon, with the banjoy right in tune
I love no one but you, my heart is ever true
my dixie darling, my dixie queen

Goin down south to have a good time
See my girl in old Carolin'
I'll drink my booze and do as I please
With all the girls I long to squeeze

chorus

harpy

I didn't have time tonight to listen to the lyrics.....seems to me there are more verses, but I'm not sure. If so, I'll try to post before the weekend. In the meantime, how DO we post songs for the DT?? I think this and "Sweet Fern" should both be included.

I was listening to this song being sung a month or so ago and then realized I had mined the tune for one of my songs, "Pastures of Memories." I did wonder where the "familiar" tune came from.

Cheerily,

MY DIXIE DARLING

My Dixie darling
Listen to the song I sing
Beneath the silver moon
With my banjo right in tune
My heart is ever true
I love no one but you
My Dixie darling
My Dixie queen

Way down below the Mason Dixon line
Down where the honeysuckles are entwined
There's where the southern winds are blowing
There's where the daises growing

The girls of the north in the gay finery
Whirling around in the society
Singing a song of Dixie darling
Where I long to be

Going down south to have a big time
See my gal in old Caroline
I'll drink my booze and do as I please
For all those girls I long to squeeze

Singing songs of Dixie darlings
Theres where I long to be going
Down where the jellyrolls growing
With my Dixie Queen

I have been giving the lyrics or other website and follow it with the link. I don't like to go to lyrics sites blind because some are loaded with pop-ups and cookies and what-else; I won't patronize them. I think it is only courtesy to let the reader decide.

Some fixer clone has objected and removed the site name leaving only the link. From now on, I will give the lyrics site name and let the reader forge the link if he/she so wishes.

Many more sites on the internet have chords, etc., to this song.

I think the version at the last link (Carter family song index) above is the most accurate. For instance, all the others quoted here had it "silver moon," and I'm sure it's "silv'ry moon."

It's a lovely song, for sure.

Bob
