Subject: Bodhran stick? From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Apr 05 - 06:02 AM I assume the word 'bodhran' is Gaelic? So...is there a correct name for the stick with which you hit the bodhran? I never feel quite comfortable calling it a beater, banger or stick. Even if there isn't a correct name for it...anyone got any suggestions for what it COULD be called? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: Stu Date: 01 Apr 05 - 06:25 AM It's often called a tipper, although myself and me mates often just call it a beater. |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: mooman Date: 01 Apr 05 - 06:27 AM In Irish, the tipper or beater or stick is called a cipín. Peace moo |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Apr 05 - 06:37 AM Thanks Moo...so how do you pronounce that? Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: gnu Date: 01 Apr 05 - 06:48 AM Bodhràn with an "alt+133" "a" is incorrect. Does anyone know if the is an "opposite" accent for the "a" on a regular keyboard? |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: rumanci Date: 01 Apr 05 - 06:57 AM Bodhrán Use the Alt Gr key to the right of the space bar :-) |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: mooman Date: 01 Apr 05 - 07:12 AM "Ki-peen" Lynne. I like this one two headed traditional bodhran hardwood mallet. I think I know some players who use a mallet! Peace moo |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: PeteBoom Date: 01 Apr 05 - 01:58 PM Add a bit more butter to the frying pan before you put the bodhran in. For a large drum, 18" or so, I find that two or three tablespoons does the trick. Not too much, but enough that the bodhran does not stick. ;-) Pete |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: Raedwulf Date: 01 Apr 05 - 02:04 PM If the stick hasn't got a nail in it, it's not a proper bodhran stick (it's not for playing with, it's for defending yourself against the unappreciative... honest...) ;-) |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: artbrooks Date: 01 Apr 05 - 02:17 PM "Alt Gr" only works if you have a UK keyboard. "Alt+0225" gets you an á on a US keyboard. |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: JohnInKansas Date: 01 Apr 05 - 02:52 PM gnu et.al. You can put those accents on in Word by holding the Control Key down while you hit the accent, then release the Ctl key and hit the letter. The left-slanting one is top row far left "`" (tilede "~" is the shifted version on that key) and the right-slanting one is just the apostrophe or single-quote "'", usually just to the left of the Enter key. Ctl ` a = à = 0224 Ctl ' a = á = 0225 Ctl ^ a = â = 0226 Ctl : a = ä = 0228 Works generally with most vowels, and I believe there are a few others. Since it doesn't work here, you'll have to type it in Word and then copy and paste here. The "Character Map" should be on most Windows installations, usually under Start - Programs - Accessories - and for some bizarre reason usually under System Tools. If you select a font that includes the char you want, click the character, it usually will tell you what the ANSI value is so you can code it in html if you want. John |

Subject: RE: Birdbrain stick? From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 01 Apr 05 - 07:32 PM I have found that most Birdbrains stick on high volume and that the rhythm also seems to stick a bit out of sync with the beat of any other muso playing along. Damn spelling checker... hmmm, will let it go this time.... :-) |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: MuddleC Date: 01 Apr 05 - 07:34 PM -why don't you call it 'Humpty'? it's a nice name, and rhymes with the noise it makes.... e.g. humperty-humperty-humperty-hump! |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Apr 05 - 06:43 AM I don't know Tim...I have an awful feeling that if I went round saying "Where have I put my Humpty?" or "Have you seen my Humpty?" It may call forth unnecessary jocular comment and unwarranted hilarity Love Lynne :-) |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: MuddleC Date: 02 Apr 05 - 08:25 AM how about a more dignified 'Sir Humphrey' in order to project a more profess... proffesion.. prefessunul.... dignified image then??? or, if you prefer the 'call a spade -a spade' approach (or 'stick in this case) hows about 'Jordan, or 'Britney' then ? they does a lot of err. . humping .. allegedly ah rats! -just call it 'my bashy thing' T |

Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: Mr Red Date: 02 Apr 05 - 12:27 PM Lynne - it would be more useful to learn a few good Bodhran jokes - the kind that suck the jokers in and then turn around the butt of the joke. eg the difference between a Bodhran and a drum seat (only has to support one bum) - gynaecologist - only has to deal with one......... you get the idea. Oh they go on. I usually point-out my drums are stained with the blood of drum joke tellers. That works well! |

Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 02 Apr 05 - 06:58 PM Guys, when it comes to accents on the Mudcat, PLEASE use the HTML sequences. Mac and Windows users are here as well as the international users. It gets confusing as to who sees what. To do accents using HTML is REALLY easy. & + vowel + acute/grave + ; For example: é = é You can use this with both Capitals or lower case letters. For other accents used in other languages, there are words other than acute or grave. You can search the Mudcat for plenty of lessons on HTML. |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 02 Apr 05 - 06:59 PM Oh, it's also NOT recommended to use accents in the Subject line when composing a message. Makes the thread hard to find. |

Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: Bonecruncher Date: 02 Apr 05 - 08:42 PM Lynne Don't use a stick for your bodhran. Instead, use a bone and call it a humerus! Colyn. |

Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: GUEST,van lingle Date: 03 Apr 05 - 09:48 AM I noticed on the Planxty reunion DVD that Christy Moore beats it (the bodhran that is) with his bare right hand. |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: GUEST,MBSLynne Date: 03 Apr 05 - 10:07 AM Yes, I do that sometimes too...I quite like playing it that way and it doesn't make your wrist ache Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: GUEST,Mr Happy Date: 03 Apr 05 - 10:23 AM Best bodrhan beaters I've seen are made of polystyrene!! 2nd best are the ones with a stanley knife either end! |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: GUEST,van lingle Date: 03 Apr 05 - 10:24 AM Yeah Lynne,I fool around with the thing and since I saw Christy doing it I quit using the tipper and am able to play the thing a bit more in time, plus it gives a fatter low end sound. vl |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: MuddleC Date: 05 Apr 05 - 06:01 AM Gay Woods also uses the bare hand |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: JeZeBeL Date: 05 Apr 05 - 02:21 PM I've always called it a tipper personally, but beater is quite acceptable. Use what you wish. But tipper sounds more delicate. :0) |
Subject: RE: Bodhran stick? From: Geoff the Duck Date: 05 Apr 05 - 05:44 PM A friend of mine swears that the correct name is a "twatter". Quack! GtD. |
