Subject: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 22 Sep 08 - 04:21 PM Yesterday, I planted a small oak tree in memory of our dear friend, Bruce "Utah" Phillips.Jacqui has posted some pictures on Flickr. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Sep 08 - 04:26 PM And here it is. My darling Luddite says he doesn't know how to do a blue clicky and doesn't want to. I KNEW there was a reason he kept me around! |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Amos Date: 22 Sep 08 - 04:38 PM Ptui on Guest. Kendall, a nice, nice gesture. If I were he, I'd hang around a few decades just to watch it grow. A |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Mark Ross Date: 22 Sep 08 - 07:15 PM Kendall, I'll forward this link to Joanna if you haven't done so already. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 22 Sep 08 - 07:18 PM Nice, Captain. We will have to find a suitable placque or stone. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 22 Sep 08 - 07:41 PM Mark, I haven't sent it to Joanna...don't know how.Go for it. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 22 Sep 08 - 07:47 PM Kendall, Jacqui, Sins, et al...I have a friend who is a 'headstone carver'...and I could have one SPECIALLY MADE, carved by HAND if you'd all like? Just send me a prototype and I'll get it to him......eh? |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 23 Sep 08 - 07:21 AM That would be beautiful, but can we afford it? I'd have it look like this: IN MEMORY OF UTAH PHILLIPS May 15 1935 May 24 2008 A simple marble slab would do. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 23 Sep 08 - 04:23 PM Kendall...need more info. Size? Font? colour of marble? I can easily get a quote so you can decide if you can afford it. Let me know. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Art Thieme Date: 23 Sep 08 - 09:56 PM Them're wonderful photos! Thanks a lot. Art |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Mrs.Duck Date: 24 Sep 08 - 06:12 AM Lovely idea. When my first husband dies the college where he worked asked me to plant a tree and they put a simple marble plaque on it. It is a flowering cherry and the college is used for the music school the children attend on Saturday mornings so I get to pass it each week. Very much keeping memories 'alive'. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Fortunato Date: 24 Sep 08 - 07:46 AM Kendall, Well done. with respect, Chance |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 24 Sep 08 - 08:18 AM It's not meant to be a huge thing that the neighbors will have to look at, rather something of white marble about a foot to a foot and a half long by half a foot high. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: open mike Date: 24 Sep 08 - 12:11 PM good one, kendall! from small acorns grow great oaks! |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 24 Sep 08 - 01:09 PM I wish I could afford a full size tree, but they are very expensive. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Amos Date: 24 Sep 08 - 01:44 PM SOrcha: Please let me know when you get a quote, by PM. I will look into helping somehow. A |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 24 Sep 08 - 04:08 PM OK, I'll run the guy down this afternoon. SIMPLE font, correct? NOTHING fancy at all? I 'think' the sans serif fonts are 'easier' to do than Serif. What you are looking at on Mudcat is a Serif...has the little 'feet' on the letters. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 24 Sep 08 - 05:01 PM Plain block letters will do. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: maeve Date: 24 Sep 08 - 07:59 PM Kendall, your little oak will grow to suit the site far more successfully than a larger tree in much the same way that Utah grew to fit his own big-hearted world. You chose very well. maeve |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 25 Sep 08 - 07:42 AM Thanks maeve. That was my original thought. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 25 Sep 08 - 07:04 PM I have posted a prototype here, on Flickr! Please veiw and let me know by e mail or PM if this is acceptable. Bear in mind that the 'rock' doesn't have to be a polished slab...it can be a 'thunder egg'/glacier rock, or nearly anything 'hard' like marble or granite. Slate is out. So is anything crystalline like quartz. I suspect however that if the surface is not flat it might cost more. Don't know for sure about that tho. Kendall, I don't have your email anymore. Mine is sorcha at netcommander dot com |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 25 Sep 08 - 07:26 PM Oh, yes...we ARE talking about a more or less flat stone right? Or a smallish 'boulder'? NOT an upright plinth thing? |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 25 Sep 08 - 08:42 PM I'll send you my e mail via PM It doesn't have to be any particular shape. I went to your flickr site but didn't see what you were talking about. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 25 Sep 08 - 10:07 PM Kendall, the link I posted should have taken you right to the prototype....I admit it IS hard to see...because you are looking for a 'picture' and this is just plain text. If you get to my Main Page on Flickr! it should be the 'newest' additon...or try the link above again...? |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 25 Sep 08 - 10:12 PM How the devil do you paste in text that is in a different font from Mudcat? I have done the text in the Arial font...??? |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Amos Date: 25 Sep 08 - 11:11 PM You make little brackets just as with "bold" but instead of "b" you put "font=Arial" and "/font" in them. A |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 26 Sep 08 - 11:51 AM I still don't see anything that looks like a link. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Jeri Date: 26 Sep 08 - 12:13 PM Sorcha's text memorial message. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: maeve Date: 26 Sep 08 - 12:13 PM Kendall, Sorcha's link worked fine for me, so give this a try- Here it is again: |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 04:39 PM OK, gang...I talked to Mark. He has a piece of slightly polished light grey granite, about a foot square, except that it isn't 'square'. It isn't 'oval' either, but more of a square with rounded corners, and 4" thick. Weighs about 25 lbs. I can pick it up EASILY. It would cost 'us' about $100-150 for the rock and the lettering. If I do this right, it will look something like the below: IN MEMORY OF UTAH PHILLIPS May 15 1935 - May 24 2008 |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 04:40 PM Well, it didn't come out in the Arial font....or centered like I wanted it either...but.... Hold on, and I'll change the pic at flickr! |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 04:59 PM NOW try....Utah Memoral pic I put the blotter frame around it to make it easier to see....the blotter frame will NOT be on the rock. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 05:45 PM Oh yea....don't forget there will be shipping from Wyoming to Maine...I don't know yet how much that might be, but I 'think' I can cover that....if I ship it 'slow boat'.... |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 26 Sep 08 - 08:08 PM Let me look around here. If I find something that will simplify things. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 26 Sep 08 - 08:10 PM I wasn't actually looking for donations, but I guess I'm open to it. It will be on my front lawn as long as Jacqui and I are alive. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 09:03 PM Uh, Kendall...you WILL be open to donations. Over MY dead body...and I'm a bit younger than you are...! LOL Now, mind you probably WON'T get a 'deal' like this locally, and I dont' mind shipping. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 26 Sep 08 - 09:31 PM I really didn't want to say this, but the 'rock' and engraving that Mark quoted me for $150 he said would for anyone else be about $300. Kendall, please let me do this as my contribution? |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 27 Sep 08 - 07:13 AM I'll get back to you. Your offer is most generous. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: open mike Date: 27 Sep 08 - 11:04 AM hopefully the stone and tree will be ther long past your lives...in that case would it be helpful to have a few words of explanation for why you chose to memorialize him? Golden voice of th4e Great Southwest, storyteller, musican, organizer Folk singer/storyteller, an eclectic, historian, philosopher, hobo, and radio show host. or similar?? |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 27 Sep 08 - 12:17 PM Number one reason, Dear friend and hero. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 29 Sep 08 - 04:21 PM I'm afraid the little Oak tree I planted is not going to make it. I'm thinking it was too soon to transplant it. I'll try again later in the season. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 29 Sep 08 - 04:28 PM I think four days and nights of teeming rain had something to do with it. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 29 Sep 08 - 04:52 PM There is a stone mason within walking distance of my house. A young man, third or fourth generation stone carver. I will speak with him. The shipping alone I think might make it prohibitive, Sorcha. A very kind and generous offer. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Sorcha Date: 29 Sep 08 - 07:48 PM OK, I'll tell Mark that stone is 'back on the market' |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: kendall Date: 29 Sep 08 - 11:09 PM And I thank you too Sorcha |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: jacqui.c Date: 18 Nov 08 - 09:04 AM Update. Kendall found a larger sapling and that seems to have survived the move. He has a cousin in Machias who has a lady friend who owns the local stone masonry business and has made the stone. They visited yesterday and the stone has now been laid in place. You can see the photo here. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: SINSULL Date: 18 Nov 08 - 09:33 AM That is really beautiful, guys. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: EBarnacle Date: 18 Nov 08 - 10:26 AM A tree is tangible and beautiful but the really lasting memorial is the difference he made and the people he has influenced, even when they do not know it. |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Art Thieme Date: 18 Nov 08 - 04:46 PM That's just great to see. Reading it brings memories of so many facets of the man. Thanks. Art |
Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips From: Art Thieme Date: 18 Nov 08 - 11:02 PM Does anyone know the current status of the 2 CD set of some of us singing Utah's songs that Dan Shatz is working on?? Art |
