Subject: BS: 9/11 $20 Swindle
From: Skivee
Date: 22 Jul 08 - 03:31 AM

These people should be made to wear signs around their necks proclaiming their shame.

You may have seen ads for "commemorative" 9/11 $20 metal bills being sold to remember "all those who died on that tragic day". They are rectangular, about the same size as a dollar bill. On one side, they have a NYC skyline, complete with both WTC towers intact. On the obverse the Statue of Liberty gazes at the rebuilt WTC design.

They are being promo-ed by one of those "We will try to suggest strongly that we have something to do with the US Mint, or that our coins have great collector value, but not really" companies.
They make a deal about how they were going to sell at $40.00 per, but for a limited time, they will sell them to lucky customers for the face value of $20. They are redeemable for "coin of the realm".

The implication is that they won't be making any money on the deal.
FYI, the realm that they would be redeemed in is Liberia, where they were struck. The current Liberian to US Dollar exchange rate is below:
20.00 LRD = 0.316706 USD
So each of these beautiful noncirculating works of art will devalue your $20 down to 32 cents.
Their $19.68 gross doesn't include shipping.
Now if we could only get this wonderful art rendered on black velvet.
I could go on about how this brings tacky commercialism to a new low, but If you still think that this is a good deal, drop me a line. I've got an incredible Ponzi scheme to interest you in.
Reprehensible
Edited to add: The dollar bill sized plastic display case is available for about $9.50 (the type was small; I couldn't be sure of the exact amount.)

I saw an ad on TV for that really stupid "commemorative" Liberian metal "bill."

"The first twenty dollar bill to display two different numbers adding up to twenty ~ 9 and 11!"

They also represent the item as featuring "99.9 Silver Plate" [emphasis mine].

A note on the Batman review: Batman's "Gotham City," like Superman's "Metropolis," has always represented New York City, but this new film was quite clearly shot in Chicago...

You missed the first go-round. Those commemmorative dollars originally were said to be made of silver melted down in the basement vaults of the towers when they collapsed. When it turned out that maybe one ounce of said silver was added to the non-911 mix, they had to pull them. Nasty people. Idiotic consumers.

I think that, in keeping with Max's mission statement (for lack of a better term) about retaining as much anarchy at Mudcat as possible, I think the Batman review should stay! More confusion in the world? Yayyyy! ...and the review is far too entertaining to spread despair.

Sorry Sharon but it had to go. LOL-This clone though found it humorous though and wishes Skivee might repost it in the other thread!

Is this to imply that Liberian things are cheap and untrustworthy? I'll have you know that Liberia flags more oil tankers than any other country and where would we be without oil tankers?

BTW, do you know how to sink a Liberain tanker?
(Put it in the water)

Yeah, I guess nothing goes down faster than a two-dollar whore on a Liberian tanker....................

Hey SharonA, I understand your feelings about the edit; but the Joe-clones were just doing what I asked that to. I was really bothered that my own sloppy cut and paste had confused my serious post with the intentionally inept fake "Batman review".
Every time I see the ad, my head gets all esplody.
On the other hand, if anyone feels moved to read the Batman bit, the are welcome to find it here:
Just Be warned, My skivee posts are not to everyone's taste
Here's a hint, though. It's not really a Batman review.

OK, Skivee and Joeclone, what must be must be. Glad to see that Batman has landed somewhere else in our Gotham.

Ooooh, I love that word "esplody"!

As for the tacky "commemorative" cr*p, such things are hardly new. Piece of the True Cross, anyone?

I've got one of those. I keep it wrapped up in a corner piece from the shroud of Turin.

This is right up there with the ads where for a low price you can have a star named after a loved one....what a great birthday, anniversary, christmas gift....what a great way to filch off of idiots looking to waste money.
