Subject: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Feb 09 - 11:15 PM Among American folkies, one of the most respected and legendary folk songbooks is Song Fest, edited by Dick & Beth Best and published by IOCA. You'll find indexes of the 1938, 1948, and 1955 editions in the thread titled Help: Song Fest - How many editions? Are there other songbook indexes scattered around the threads that should be mentioned here? -Joe- This is a PermaThread™, maintained by Joe Offer. Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: GUEST,iancarterb Date: 08 Feb 09 - 11:26 PM I once hunted extensively for a later edition of Song Fest because I had unintentionally kept and then lost someone else's copy of the 1955 edition. I found none, but this was in 1980 or so, and it's a lot easier to hunt now. Carter |

Subject: Index: Burl Ives Songbook From: JohnInKansas Date: 05 Jan 12 - 09:15 PM A couple of books that I've processed to get off the book shelf might be of interest for someone looking for where to look for a song. It's possible that these might have been listed here before, but I didn't find them with a search. Those compiling indices are free to move them wherever is appropriate, of course. Both books were in "well aged" condition, and too fragile to survive as paper. Scanning reduced what was left to "scraps and shreds." First Book: BURL IVES SONGBOOK Front pages through about half of the Table of Contents missing. Ballentine Books (paperback). No ISBN or other publisher data shown on pages remaining, but Amazon & Wiki both show publication 1953. Table of Contents has been partially reconstructed. Remainder of the book appears complete, although pages in "variable condition." Table of Contents In the above, the entries in ALL CAPS are brief "essays" on the Chapter Contents, rather than tunes/songs. Second Book: JoeO pointed out to me that I missed the last page of the TOC for the Burl Ives Songbook Add onto the end: CHAPTER V: The Frontiers of America, 1800-1850 215 Joe might want to paste the addition into the previous post, and delete this one.(?) I managed to scan another: American Ballads: Naughty Ribald and Classic edited by Charles O'Brien Kennedy, Fawcett Publications, NY, 1952, but the OCR didn't work too well on the TOC, so I may be able (or not) to get it posted later. This one is lyrics only, and mostly well know songs, but variations(?) in lyrics might be of interest to some people if I can get it put together. John |

Subject: Index: Folk Song Jamboree (Marais & Miranda) From: JohnInKansas Date: 06 Jan 12 - 02:16 AM Marais & Miranda Folk Song Jamboree © 1960 Josef Marais Ballentine Books Paperback INDEX OF TITLES I've saved both books as pdf files, but in "publishing quality" the Ives is ~160 MB and the Marais & Miranda ~ 95 MB, so too large for convenient email. It is theoretically feasible to extract individual songs, as .jpg or .pdf, if someone has a real need and can PM an email addy and tell what's wanted, but I can't make any promises on deliveries. Subject: Index:American Ballads: Naughty Ribald and Classic From: JohnInKansas Date: 06 Jan 12 - 02:54 AM Via OCR from Scan to PDF, with minimal corrections; but I think I got most of the misread characters. American Ballads: Naughty Ribald and Classic compiled by Charles O'Brien Kennedy, Fawcett Publications, NY, 1952
This book is "Lyrics Only." No Dots or Chords. The book also has a table of "First Lines" and a separate listing of "Titles and Authors" but those didn't come through the OCR process at all well. John |

Subject: Index: World Folk Songs (Marais & Miranda) From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Aug 19 - 09:32 PM Oh, I wish I had asked John in Kansas for his PDF files. There were some wonderful books produced in paperback in the 1950s and 1960s, but now they're falling apart. It happens often that the book just destroys itself when I put it in the scanner. Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: The Doctor Date: 27 Aug 19 - 07:04 AM Over the years I have accumulated around fifty songbooks, and some years ago I made an index of them, by title (Roman) and by first line (Italic). As it runs to 85 pages of Word it is rather too long to post here, but if I can find a way to send it I shall do so. Suggestions welcome.

Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: Nigel Parsons Date: 27 Aug 19 - 08:21 AM Hi: The Doctor Clearly a lot of work, but also, as you say, a bit long to post here. Do you still also have it as a list per song book? (or can each be easily separated out?). If so you could post each book in a separate message on this thread. The general "lyrics and knowledge" search on the home page would then guide anyone searching for a particular song (title or first line) to the occurrence of that song in this thread, identifying what book it can be found in. |
Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: The Doctor Date: 28 Aug 19 - 03:39 AM Unfortunately it is one complete index, which would now be very difficult to separate out. |
Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Aug 19 - 05:29 AM Hi, "the doctor" - take a look at what we've done already (crosslinks above), and see if there's any way you can integrate with what we have. So many of us have so many songbooks, that we just can't post every song from every book here. But if we index our songbook collections here, Google searches often lead requesters to us, and then we can provide them with the songs. We have been doing this for years, and it has been fun. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: GUEST,# Date: 01 Mar 21 - 03:33 PM Rex, I'm guessing that the missing song was in the book forward. I notice that the list you've put up has Sourwood Mountain as the #12 song, yet in the following image (see second page of the screen that opens) it's listed as # 13. Just a guess, but it's all I can figure. Perhaps if there's someone out there with the book the 'mystery' will be solved. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/249535116/30-and-1-folk-songs-from-the-southern?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details |
Subject: RE: Songbook Indexing: Miscellaneous Songbooks From: Rex Date: 04 Mar 21 - 12:12 PM Thank'ee to Guest,# for pointing out the actual numerical order of Sourwood Mountain in 30 and 1 Folk Songs from the Southern Mountains. It could be that another song is within the forward. Lunsford had a playful streak and could well have done that. The title implies it. Yes, hopefully someone has an extant copy and can clear this up. |
