Subject: Finally! An index to my songbooks
From: Joe Offer

I've been getting sick and tired of pulling down five songbooks off the shelf every time I want to find a song. So, tonight I got motivated and started a database index of all my songbooks. I got halfway through the index of Lomax's "Folk Songs of North America," and I got tired. I decided to see if there might be an online list of the songs in this book. Well, I found something better than that. Here's the welcoming blurb:
Welcome to the UTK Song Index (click here). This is a publicly available database providing access to citations for about 50,000 songs in more than 1,400 published song anthologies owned by the George F. DeVine Music Library at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Well, I guess designing my database was good practice....

While we're at it, there's a Song Index at Arizona State University, mostly popular songs, also indexed by first line.

Thanks for the links, Joe.

I started that work 20 years ago (indexing my songbooks and my records), after not finding the lyrics to one song for about half an hour when I knew I had them. But alas, the index is still on paper and that makes the search difficult (Irish girl, brave Irish girl, bold Irish girl, young Irish girl?...Oh I see, The Irish Lass).

I'm wondering if any new songbook indices have come online since I started this thread a year ago. UTK is supposed to upgrade its service soon, but it's already a great tool

Duke University Sheet Music Collections is a good place to check up on the latest additions to the sheet music/songbook sites. They keep it pretty much up to date; it was updated on 11 Jun 99.

If anyone is into indexing things, I cast my enthusiastic vote for askSam as a database; you can't beat full-text searching for finding things where titles vary.
