Subject: Index for Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia Vols From: adevine Date: 16 Apr 10 - 07:35 PM I am looking for the indexes (list of songs) in Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia, Vols. 1 & 2. I can only find half of the indexes (500+) for each book which has about a thousand songs in each volume. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Index for Silverman's From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Apr 10 - 09:02 PM Hi, Adevine - I don't know why, but the late John in Brisbane had posted the Silverman (volume 1) index in a thread called A Maid Went to Comber. John's index does seem to be complete. I count approximately 500 songs in each volume, estimating from the alphabetical index. The UTK Song Index has -Joe Offer, Lazy Forum Moderator, trying to avoid typing- |

Subject: RE: Index: Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia From: GUEST Date: 16 Apr 10 - 10:17 PM Thanks, but the advertisements from Sheet Music Plus says there are 1,000 songs in each volume. Here's the ad for Vol 1: "About Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia, Volume 1 For voice and guitar. Piano/Vocal/Chords Songbook (Arrangements for piano and voice with guitar chords). Folk. Difficulty: easy-medium. Fake book. Vocal melody, lyrics, chord names and index of first lines. 432 pages. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.312143). ISBN 0634084690. With vocal melody, lyrics, chord names and index of first lines. Folk. 9x12 inches. Over 1,000 favorite songs representing categories such as: country cowboys, outlaws, love and courting, sentimental ballads, international favorites, children, Christmas, many more." And from the blurb about Vol. 2: "1,000 more favorite folk tunes covering categories: blues and jazz; gospel; bluegrass; comic; rounds; sea songs; patriotic; wartime; more." http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/Jerry-Silverman-s-Folk-Song-Encyclopedia-Volume-2/2910071 |
Subject: RE: Index: Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia From: GUEST Date: 16 Apr 10 - 10:24 PM If anyone here has copies of either volume, I would appreciate a scan of the TOC and forward same to my email address. Word, PDF, Excel, Open Office. Thanks |
Subject: RE: Index: Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Apr 10 - 10:37 PM I can send you scans of the Table of Contents if you really want them, but I think you'll find they are just about the same as what I posted. I counted the number of songs in one column, and multiplied by the number of columns. Short columns had 60 songs, and long columns had 75. The total was about 500 songs per volume, as I said above. The cover of each volume says "With over 1,000 favorite songs arranged for voice and guitar," which does lead one to believe that's 1,000 songs per volume - but I counted the actual Table of Contents, and I'm quite good at math. John in Brisbane and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and I all came out with about the same number - about 500 per volume. You didn't furnish an e-mail address or your name. If you think that John and I and UTK are lying and you really want scans of the indexes, contact me by e-mail - but I'm really quite good at this because I have posted indexes of dozens of songbooks, and I think you'll find the information I posted is quite accurate. joe@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Index: Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia From: GUEST Date: 16 Apr 10 - 11:14 PM Thanks for the offer, but, lets wait until next week. I sent an e-mail to Jerry Silverman for clarification. Every index I have come across is similar to the ones above. My guess is this book was originally one volume with "over 1000 songs" and is mis-advertised in its present form. Even if I do not hear from Mr. Silverman, I am going into the city next week (I live 75 miles away in the mountains) and I will check the local public and University libraries to see if they have copies of either book. |
Subject: RE: Index: Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia From: GUEST,stephen griffith Date: 26 Aug 10 - 11:14 AM I have both volumes and the printed index above is correct. There are not 1,000 in each volume, but over 1,000 in both. |
