Subject: RE: Who has recorded 'Summer Wages' From: pdq Date: 09 Mar 10 - 06:46 PM Tony Rice's version on his solo record "Native American" is probably better than the one on the New South record, but both are "must have" status. The US has been making great music like this for almost 40 years and yet it never gets played on "for profit" radio stations. |

Subject: RE: Who has recorded 'Summer Wages' From: GUEST,Gib Sosman Date: 19 Sep 14 - 03:31 PM Re: "Summer Wages": Last year I went looking for a version I could download for a friend who hadn't heard it in 20 years or more, but finding the version I remembered of this song took a while. I was looking for the original but kept finding Ian's later version, which I thought was over-orchestrated. Finally found the original version, (on YouTube), a video in which the 45 rpm record's owner plays it on an old record player. The sound is very good, considering. Photos on the Web of some of the surviving 45 records of this song led me to believe it may not have been released either as a single or on an album, since it is now apparently quite scarce or even rare. It was a hit for a while on the radio, so it's hard to imagine it wasn't in stores or put in an album collection. But I couldn't find any albums with it or any normal consumer 45 rpm records of it. The only copies of the original record which I could find on the Web were "not for sale" promo records for radio stations. --- P.S. This website is fascinating, for music lovers, what a tremendous archive of information! Thank you Mudcat Dot Or |
Subject: RE: Who has recorded 'Summer Wages' From: GUEST,DonMeixner Date: 19 Sep 14 - 11:30 PM To my knowledge first recorded on Vanguard records by Ian and Sylvia, So Much For Dreaming about 1968. Also recorded The French Girl which is very nice indeed. Don |
Subject: RE: Who has recorded 'Summer Wages' From: GUEST,Gib Sosman Date: 12 Sep 15 - 06:37 AM "So Much For dreaming" (album) is listed on Amazon with audio samples of the tracks, but the "Summer wages" track is definitely not the same as the one that was a hit on country stations in about 1975. |
Subject: RE: Who has recorded 'Summer Wages' From: GUEST,Jerome Clark Date: 12 Sep 15 - 07:20 PM The most recent recording of "Summer Wages" is on the just-released Songs of Heart & Home by Greg Blake. It's a bluegrass album, and quite a good one, I might add. |
Subject: RE: Who has recorded 'Summer Wages' From: GUEST,gib sosman Date: 19 Oct 18 - 02:38 PM my most favorite recording of it is the one that was a country radio hit in '75 or maybe '76. it's on youtube labeled "alternate take". it's not jusy my favorite but the only version i like... to me, the earler and later recordings are much inferior. |
