From: Little Hawk

I am copying and pasting the following endorsement from Gore Vidal. Dennis Kucinich's many enemies in the federal government and the ruling elite have attempted to end his political career by redrawing the voting districts in his area and thereby watering down the votes of Mr Kucinich's loyal supporters. Gerrymandering, in other words...it's an old and corrupt technique for getting rid of "troublemakers" like Mr Kucinich if you can't get them out any other way.

Here is Gore Vidal's endorsement. It's well worth reading:

Dennis Kucinich was a voice of sanity after 9/11, cautioning against lashing out at the world. He led the effort in Congress opposing George Bush's Iraq War. His October 2002 analysis of the call for war against Iraq stands today as a statement of clarity of vision and courage which, if heeded, would have spared the lives of US soldiers and Iraqi citizens alike. His was a relentless challenge to the rationale for the war and a call for accountability for those who lied to drag us into the war. You may remember that it was Kucinich who led the effort to try to impeach George Bush and Dick Cheney for their fabrications, prevarications, and other misstatements. When others were promising 'permanent war for permanent peace' Kucinich was the one who pointed out the idiocy and the hypocrisy.

In the past decade, Kucinich opposed not only the war in Iraq, he voted against every single funding bill for war, whether Iraq or Afghanistan. It was Kucinich who again rose up to create a rare bipartisan coalition to thwart the war against Libya for a time. As the fundamentalists now take hold there, once again the question arises, why did we go into Libya? What was that really about?

Today, the neocons again are attempting to rush America into a war against Iran. It was Kucinich who took to the floor of the House in debate to knock down again and again the false claims that were being made to try to justify sanctions which could lead to still another war.

I am writing to urge your financial support for the re-election campaign of Congressman Dennis Kucinich, who has been our nation's most consistent voice for peace, economic and social justice. Months ago, Congressman Kucinich's district was dramatically altered by the Republican state legislature and the primary election is in only 19 days with mail-in balloting well underway. As a result, he is facing a highly competitive primary with a majority of new territory. This champion of peace obviously cannot rely on war profiteers for funds necessary to gain re-election. He must rely on those of us who are peace profiteers, our friends and family, to be his support and his voice as he has been ours over the past decade and more.

I urge you today to go to www.kucinich.us/donate and contribute to Dennis Kucinich's re-election. We must protect Congress' most consistent, most courageous voice for peace and for civil liberties which peace protects. Please contribute generously to his reelection. Please help preserve his voice, his vote in the United States Congress.

Thank you,

Gore Vidal

And here I thought I was special when I received an email from the author himself!:-)

Really, I was pleased to see this and I hope it gets them lots of donations. We need Kucinich more than ever, now, esp. with Barney Franks leaving.

Thanks for posting this, LH. You might also like to read what Lessig has to say about fixing the Republic in the thread I started about it.

I agree with both the above. Indeed in the aftermath of the Panorama expose of poverty, malnutrition, and death from lack of hospital treatment, in one of the richest countries in the world, you desperately need Kucinich's vision for a health service (but then so do we in the UK as the reactionaries disembowel ours).

I've been a Kucinich fan for years and he is the sure proof that far left and far right are often quite close together. Matter of fact......Click Here.

Ohio was once the bastion of "Taft Republicanism" but in the past 50 years has been all over the board. We have had, often alternating, GOP and Democratic governors. We have Dennis Kucinich and John Boehner. And while many still consider Ohio strongly conservative we just busted the current GOP governor's (John Kasich) Attempt at union busting. For many years we also had the most liberal senator in the country with Howard Metzenbaum and now a few years after his death we again regain that title with Sherrod Brown.

We often have a repub controlled state legislature and sadly they were in control on this last bullshit gerrymander.

10 years ago, not long after 911, Dennis Kucinich made this speech. Consider it in the light of what has happened since:

Text of Dennis' Prayer for America Speech, February 17, 2002:

I offer these brief remarks today as a prayer for our country, with love of democracy, as a celebration of our country. With love for our country. With hope for our country. With a belief that the light of freedom cannot be extinguished as long as it is inside of us. With a belief that freedom rings resoundingly in a democracy each time we speak freely. With the understanding that freedom stirs the human heart and fear stills it. With the belief that a free people cannot walk in fear and faith at the same time.

With the understanding that there is a deeper truth expressed in the unity of the United States. That implicit in the union of our country is the union of all people. That all people are essentially one. That the world is interconnected not only on the material level of economics, trade, communication, and transportation, but innerconnected through human consciousness, through the human heart, through the heart of the world, through the simply expressed impulse and yearning to be and to breathe free.

I offer this prayer for America.

Let us pray that our nation will remember that the unfolding of the promise of democracy in our nation paralleled the striving for civil rights. That is why we must challenge the rationale of the Patriot Act. We must ask why should America put aside guarantees of constitutional justice?

How can we justify in effect canceling the First Amendment and the right of free speech, the right to peaceably assemble?

How can we justify in effect canceling the Fourth Amendment, probable cause, the prohibitions against unreasonable search and seizure?

How can we justify in effect canceling the Fifth Amendment, nullifying due process, and allowing for indefinite incarceration without a trial?

How can we justify in effect canceling the Sixth Amendment, the right to prompt and public trial?

How can we justify in effect canceling the Eighth Amendment which protects against cruel and unusual punishment?

We cannot justify widespread wiretaps and internet surveillance without judicial supervision, let alone with it.

We cannot justify secret searches without a warrant.

We cannot justify giving the Attorney General the ability to designate domestic terror groups.

We cannot justify giving the FBI total access to any type of data which may exist in any system anywhere such as medical records and financial records.

We cannot justify giving the CIA the ability to target people in this country for intelligence surveillance.

We cannot justify a government which takes from the people our right to privacy and then assumes for its own operations a right to total secrecy.

The Attorney General recently covered up a statue of Lady Justice showing her bosom as if to underscore there is no danger of justice exposing herself at this time, before this administration.

Let us pray that our nation's leaders will not be overcome with fear. Because today there is great fear in our great Capitol. And this must be understood before we can ask about the shortcomings of Congress in the current environment.

The great fear began when we had to evacuate the Capitol on September 11.

It continued when we had to leave the Capitol again when a bomb scare occurred as members were pressing the CIA during a secret briefing.

It continued when we abandoned Washington when anthrax, possibly from a government lab, arrived in the mail.

It continued when the Attorney General declared a nationwide terror alert and then the Administration brought the destructive Patriot Bill to the floor of the House.

It continued in the release of the bin Laden tapes at the same time the President was announcing the withdrawal from the ABM treaty.

It remains present in the cordoning off of the Capitol.

It is present in the camouflaged armed national guardsmen who greet members of Congress each day we enter the Capitol campus.

It is present in the labyrinth of concrete barriers through which we must pass each time we go to vote.

The trappings of a state of siege trap us in a state of fear, ill-equipped to deal with the Patriot Games, the Mind Games, the War Games of an unelected President and his unelected Vice President.

Let us pray that our country will stop this war. "To promote the common defense" is one of the formational principles of America.

Our Congress gave the President the ability to respond to the tragedy of September 11. We licensed a response to those who helped bring the terror of September 11th. But we the people and our elected representatives must reserve the right to measure the response, to proportion the response, to challenge the response, and to correct the response.

Because we did not authorize the invasion of Iraq.

We did not authorize the invasion of Iran.

We did not authorize the invasion of North Korea.

We did not authorize the bombing of civilians in Afghanistan.

We did not authorize permanent detainees in Guantanamo Bay.

We did not authorize the withdrawal from the Geneva Convention.

We did not authorize military tribunals suspending due process and habeas corpus.

We did not authorize assassination squads.

We did not authorize the resurrection of COINTELPRO.

We did not authorize the repeal of the Bill of Rights.

We did not authorize the revocation of the Constitution.

We did not authorize national identity cards.

We did not authorize the eye of Big Brother to peer from cameras throughout our cities.

We did not authorize an eye for an eye.

Nor did we ask that the blood of innocent people, who perished on September 11, be avenged with the blood of innocent villagers in Afghanistan.

We did not authorize the administration to wage war anytime, anywhere, anyhow it pleases.

We did not authorize war without end.

We did not authorize a permanent war economy.

Yet we are upon the threshold of a permanent war economy. The President has requested a $45.6 billion increase in military spending. All defense-related programs will cost close to $400 billion.

Consider that the Department of Defense has never passed an independent audit.

Consider that the Inspector General has notified Congress that the Pentagon cannot properly account for $1.2 trillion in transactions.

Consider that in recent years the Dept. of Defense could not match $22 billion worth of expenditures to the items it purchased, wrote off, as lost, billions of dollars worth of in-transit inventory and stored nearly $30 billion worth of spare parts it did not need.

Yet the defense budget grows with more money for weapons systems to fight a cold war which ended, weapon systems in search of new enemies to create new wars. This has nothing to do with fighting terror.

This has everything to do with fueling a military industrial machine with the treasure of our nation, risking the future of our nation, risking democracy itself with the militarization of thought which follows the militarization of the budget.

Let us pray for our children. Our children deserve a world without end. Not a war without end. Our children deserve a world free of the terror of hunger, free of the terror of poor health care, free of the terror of homelessness, free of the terror of ignorance, free of the terror of hopelessness, free of the terror of policies which are committed to a world view which is not appropriate for the survival of a free people, not appropriate for the survival of democratic values, not appropriate for the survival of our nation, and not appropriate for the survival of the world.

Let us pray that we have the courage and the will as a people and as a nation to shore ourselves up, to reclaim from the ruins of September 11th our democratic traditions.

Let us declare our love for democracy. Let us declare our intent for peace.

Let us work to make nonviolence an organizing principle in our own society.

Let us recommit ourselves to the slow and painstaking work of statecraft, which sees peace, not war as being inevitable.

Let us work for a world where someday war becomes archaic.

That is the vision which the proposal to create a Department of Peace envisions. Forty-three members of Congress are now cosponsoring the legislation.

Let us work for a world where nuclear disarmament is an imperative. That is why we must begin by insisting on the commitments of the ABM treaty. That is why we must be steadfast for nonproliferation.

Let us work for a world where America can lead the day in banning weapons of mass destruction not only from our land and sea and sky but from outer space itself. That is the vision of HR 3616: A universe free of fear. Where we can look up at God's creation in the stars and imagine infinite wisdom, infinite peace, infinite possibilities, not infinite war, because we are taught that the kingdom will come on earth as it is in heaven.

Let us pray that we have the courage to replace the images of death which haunt us, the layers of images of September 11th, faded into images of patriotism, spliced into images of military mobilization, jump-cut into images of our secular celebrations of the World Series, New Year's Eve, the Superbowl, the Olympics, the strobic flashes which touch our deepest fears, let us replace those images with the work of human relations, reaching out to people, helping our own citizens here at home, lifting the plight of the poor everywhere.

That is the America which has the ability to rally the support of the world.

That is the America which stands not in pursuit of an axis of evil, but which is itself at the axis of hope and faith and peace and freedom. America, America. God shed grace on thee. Crown thy good, America.

Not with weapons of mass destruction. Not with invocations of an axis of evil. Not through breaking international treaties. Not through establishing America as king of a unipolar world. Crown thy good America. America, America. Let us pray for our country. Let us love our country. Let us defend our country not only from the threats without but from the threats within.

Crown thy good, America. Crown thy good with brotherhood, and sisterhood. And crown thy good with compassion and restraint and forbearance and a commitment to peace, to democracy, to economic justice here at home and throughout the world.

Crown thy good, America. Crown thy good America. Crown thy good.

Thank you.

Dennis

And from the great Langston Hughes in 1938........

The free?

Who said the free? Not me? Surely not me? The millions on relief today? The millions shot down when we strike? The millions who have nothing for our pay? For all the dreams we've dreamed And all the songs we've sung And all the hopes we've held And all the flags we've hung, The millions who have nothing for our pay-- Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again-- The land that never has been yet-- And yet must be--the land where every man is free. The land that's mine--the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME-- Who made America, Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain, Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain, Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose-- The steel of freedom does not stain. From those who live like leeches on the people's lives, We must take back our land again, America!

O, yes, I say it plain, America never was America to me, And yet I swear this oath-- America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death, The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies, We, the people, must redeem The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers. The mountains and the endless plain-- All, all the stretch of these great green states-- And make America again!

I love Dennis but at least Marcy is still a very progressive Dem who will be running agaisnt Joe the Plumber. Kucinich will remain in the public eye somewhere and somehow.

While I hate losing the Democratic district and vote, I am more concerned we return Sherrod Brown to the Senate. Ohio is very weird about their choices. The home of old time Taft Republicanism, we have also had a bit of a tradition in having the most liberal member of the Senate. Sherrod Brown now holds the seat held for many years by Howard Metzenbaum.

Sadly though we are also the home of John Boehner........Boner?.......Dickhead?..........whatever..............

The thing that's "odd" about Dennis Kucinich is that he dares to tell the actual truth about what's going on in USA domestic and foreign policy.

It's so rare for any American politician to do that, that Kucinich appears to be an eccentric or a "madman" in the general context of normal American political discourse.

A sane man always appears to be a madman when he is living in the village of the mad.

It means that redistricting eliminated his district and he ran against an long-time incumbent who was an ally. Hard choices for the voters there, no doubt, except that she may have been seen as somewhat more likely to be effective and seen as less fringe-y. The NY Times said of her: "Ms. Kaptur is one of the longest-serving women in the House and has a powerful position as the No. 2 Democrat on the House appropriations committee. She stands to become the top Democrat on that committee when Norm Dicks of Washington retires."

Kucinich has long been a thorn in the side of the Capitol Hill establishment (which includes both parties). They couldn't get rid of him in his home district, so they simply eliminated it by redrawing the boundaries (gerrymandering). Now he won't be there to vote against the next "pre-emptive" war when it comes. I doubt they'll run into that problem with Ms Kaptur "the No. 2 Democrat on the House appropriations committee". She is a member of the Capitol Hill establishment.

I hope he gets around to writing some books now. I think he'd have a lot to say.

Well, Repubs got what they wanted.... Here in NC they drew up the lines to bust 2 Dems by combining their districts so it is an overall loss for the Dems in Ohio because both of these people would have been re-elected and now only one will...

We need the UN to supervise the redrawing of districts... This game has been going on too long and only creates safe districts where people don't feel as if they have to find compromise to win...

Jeez, Little Hawk, do you actually know anything about Kaptur, or are you just going on that one fact about her? Once they're elected, they gotta do something there, or what's the point?? Kucinich was in there for 15 years, that makes him pretty "establishment", by your definition.

From Common Dreams, who subtitle themselves "Building Progressive Community", in an article entitled, "What America Lost When Dennis Kucinich Lost":

Kucinich and Kaptur have both served in Congress as outsiders, members of the Progressive Caucus, with records of opposing wars, free-trade deals and economic policies that favor the one percent over the 99 percent. Both have 95 percent AFL-CIO records. Both have 100 percent ACLU records.

There were, to be sure, distinctions. Kucinich, who for many years voted with opponents of reproductive rights, switched his position before the 2004 presidential election and ran this year as the more socially liberal contender. Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in the House and a champion of many feminist causes, was ranked as "mixed choice" by NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Kucinich was always the purest anti-war champion, and he made a point of highlighting that in the race with Kaptur, a ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee who the Cleveland congressman argued should have done much more to cut the Pentagon budget.

But Kaptur, who came to national prominence as an outspoken foe of the 2008 bank bailout, emerged as a national hero of union and community activists who shared her determination to "bust the banksters." She was a star of the film "Capitalism, a Love Story," in which she told filmmaker Michael Moore that the 2008 bailout was a "a financial coup d'etat."

Kaptur's boldness in opposing the big banks and Wall Street, as well as her passionate advocacy on behalf organized labor, would have been missed, as well, in a Congress that needs all the economic populists it can get.

That sounds good, Becky. What worries me is that her campaign tactics used against Mr Kucinich in the recent primary were about as dirty and unscrupulous as it gets, and you might think Karl Rove was helping her campaign team out in the backroom. This does not give me much confidence in her reliability once in office. If I'm wrong about that, I will be agreeably surprised...and pleased.

I'm sure Dennis will go on to further useful efforts in the progressive cause.

Re-districting sucks. They did that to Ron Paul, re-drawing his district to take in a large enclave of Jews, and he won by an even bigger margin than in the previous election. They did the same to Cynthia McKinney of Georgia. If you're grassroots and don't toe the fascist line, they try to give you the boot.

Gerrymandering is wrong, but since it's done by the party in power at the time, it's never right. In a fair world . . .

I will miss Dennis... though I didn't agree with his more extreme positions and would not have wanted him as president. He had a way of highlighting the issues..if only by choosing a startling one. He was sincere, honest and smart...and we may not have seen the last of him.

Re-districting is necessary as demographics change, but is so often abused by grotesque Gerrymandering. With Repubs in power in many states, they have used every slimy trick they can think of to stack the deck. And the Supreme Court, as it stands, is unlikely to stop them.

Let's not be too rough on Marcy Kaptur. They were allies for years in most cases and both were guilty of some very rough tactics during this campaignn. The new district was slightly better for a Kaptur vote and she did make the most of it. The worst thing of course is the loss of a Dem seat.

The districting did force out one Dem seat but on the plus side, the new district is in a traditionally Democratic area from Lorain/Elyria to Toledo along the lakeshore. Kaptur will face Joe the Plumber who promises a clean fight but the sense is the RSC might be willing to pump in a wad of money to elect him even though the district makes that unlikely. The RSC as well as the RNC would love to rid themselves of Kaptur as well.

Dennis Kucinich's many enemies in the federal government and the ruling elite have attempted to end his political career by redrawing the voting districts in his area and thereby watering down the votes of Mr Kucinich's loyal supporters.

It's inaccurate to suggest the "federal government" was part of this - federal employees are prohibited from most political participation except voting. You need to look to the Ohio state legislature for this watering down attempt. If Boehner was involved, it's illegal. Just as Texas congressman Tom DeLay about getting mixed up in that game.

The redistricting here was a real mess that went in and out of the legislature and then in and out of the courts and then back and forth a few times. We have a strongly GOP statehouse and a jackass GOP Governor (Kasich).

What we wound up with makes little sense from any standpoint so with everybody unhappy I figure it to be a success. My district encompasses an incredibly diverse area that no one could truly "represent."

Remember.. even Barney Frank's era has been cut short by redistricting. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Dennis has been slashed by Republicans, but he will not quit.

The Republican power grab is done with a Velociraptor-like claw of 4 talons and one do claw.
The do claw is Wall Street itself and is sharp enough to eviserate opponents with one swipe.

The other claws are;

Redistricting

Citizen United mega money campaigns/finance laws that benefit only the rich.

New Jim Crow laws to prevent the poor from voting/ in the name of preventing .00004% voter fraud cases.

and finally the eternal infernal lie about religion and guns being visciously attacked by the godless secular bible burning socialist political science sinners of the left. {otherwise known as "red meat"}

"The practice of Gerrymandering actually predates Elbridge Gerry. In 1788, Patrick Henry and his Anti-Federalist party drew the boundaries of Virginia's Fifth Congressional District to try to keep James Madison from winning a seat in Congress." The problem with America is that you have re-written your history to agree with yourselves.

"In 1788, Patrick Henry and his Anti-Federalist party drew the boundaries of Virginia's Fifth Congressional District to try to keep James Madison from winning a seat in Congress."

From then you have allowed the shit to continue, talk as you will.

Learn your history.

Warmest regards,

Dennis might just find this to be a blessing in disguise... I mean, let;s get real here.... How effective is the House of Representatives these days with all the radical righties??? No too...

He ain't going to go quietly and the Ohio Repubs, I predict, will pay for their misdeeds...

B~
